A Qualitative Scoping Review of the Impacts of Economic Recessions on Mental Health: Implications for Practice and Policy.

In a follow-up to our 2021 scoping review of the quantitative literature on the impacts of economic recessions on mental health, this scoping review summarizes qualitative research to develop a descriptive understanding of the key factors that transmute the socioeconomic stressors of a recession into poorer mental health. The previous study identified 22 qualitative studies from 2008 to 2020, which were updated with search results from six databases for articles published between 2020 and 2021. After inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to the total 335 identified studies, 13 articles were included.

Process modeling, techno-economic assessment, and life cycle assessment of the electrochemical reduction of CO: a review.

The electrochemical reduction of CO has emerged as a promising alternative to traditional fossil-based technologies for the synthesis of chemicals. Its industrial implementation could lead to a reduction in the carbon footprint of chemicals and the mitigation of climate change impacts caused by hard-to-decarbonize industrial applications, among other benefits. However, the current low technology readiness levels of such emerging technologies make it hard to predict their performance at industrial scales.

Effectiveness of Surface Cleaning and Disinfection in a Brazilian Healthcare Facility.

Background: Failures in the processes of cleaning and disinfecting health service surfaces may result in the spread and transfer of pathogens that are often associated with healthcare-related infections and outbreaks.

Unlabelled: Phenomenon: This scoping literature review summarizes current Canadian health science education and training aimed to lessen health gaps between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples.

Approach: Keyword searches of peer-reviewed and gray literature databases, websites, and resources recommended by local Aboriginal community members identified 1,754 resources. Using specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, 26 resources relevant to education and training of healthcare professionals and students in Canada were selected.

Closed incision negative pressure therapy: international multidisciplinary consensus recommendations.

Surgical site occurrences (SSOs) affect up to or over 25% of patients undergoing operative procedures, with the subset of surgical site infections (SSIs) being the most common. Commercially available closed incision negative pressure therapy (ciNPT) may offer surgeons an additional option to manage clean, closed surgical incisions. We conducted an extensive literature search for studies describing ciNPT use and assembled a diverse panel of experts to create consensus recommendations for when using ciNPT may be appropriate.

A comprehensive review of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a late-onset fatal neurodegenerative disease affecting motor neurons with an incidence of about 1/100,000. Most ALS cases are sporadic, but 5-10% of the cases are familial ALS. Both sporadic and familial ALS (FALS) are associated with degeneration of cortical and spinal motor neurons.

Assessment of disinfection of hospital surfaces using different monitoring methods.

Purpose: There is a significant morbidity associated with abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR) with a need for overall improvement during the post-operative management. Scientific literature has proven the use of negative pressure therapy (NPT) in wound healing for orthopedic and cardiac surgery with limited data present on its role in AWR. The goal of this study was to examine whether primary wound events were different between patients who had primary closure with NPT versus patients who only had primary closure after AWR.

Respiratory syncytial virus-associated hospitalizations in pre-mature infants in Lima, Peru.

We conducted a prospective cohort study in four hospitals in Lima, Peru in infants with a birth weight ≤ 1,500 g followed from birth hospital discharge up to 1 year of age to determine the incidence of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) hospitalizations. We enrolled 222 infants from March of 2009 to March of 2010: 48 infants with a birth weight < 1,000 g and 174 infants with a birth weight of 1,000-1,500 g (birth weight = 1,197 ± 224 g; gestational age = 30.1 ± 2.

Noncrosslinked porcine-derived acellular dermal matrix for single-stage complex abdominal wall herniorrhaphy after removal of infected synthetic mesh: a retrospective review.

This retrospective case review details the use of noncrosslinked intact porcine-derived acellular dermal matrix (PADM) for incisional herniorrhaphy in patients with infected synthetic mesh. A consecutive series of adult patients underwent single-stage ventral herniorrhaphy involving removal of infected synthetic mesh and repair with PADM by a single surgeon (2009 to 2011). Comorbidities, repair procedures, postoperative complications, and hernia recurrence were noted.

Non-crosslinked porcine-derived acellular dermal matrix for the management of complex ventral abdominal wall hernias: a report of 45 cases.

Purpose: Ventral abdominal wall hernias are common and repair is frequently associated with complications and recurrence. Although non-crosslinked intact porcine-derived acellular dermal matrix (PADM) has been used successfully in the repair of complex ventral hernias, there is currently no consensus regarding the type of mesh and surgical techniques to use in these patients. This report provides added support for PADM use in complex ventral hernias.

Sex education in the eyes of primary school teachers in Novo Hamburgo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Sex education has been included in the National Curriculum of the Brazilian Ministry of Education since 1996 as a cross-cutting theme that should be linked to the contents of each school subject in primary and high schools. This paper presents a study of the implementation of this policy in the primary schools of Novo Hamburgo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, based on interviews between January 2011 and April 2012 with 82 teachers working in those schools. We found that sex education was not being taught as a cross-cutting theme in any of the schools, and that any lessons were mostly dominated by a biomedical discourse focusing primarily on the reproductive organs, fertility, pregnancy, and contraception.

Automated dermoscopy image analysis of pigmented skin lesions.

Dermoscopy (dermatoscopy, epiluminescence microscopy) is a non-invasive diagnostic technique for the in vivo observation of pigmented skin lesions (PSLs), allowing a better visualization of surface and subsurface structures (from the epidermis to the papillary dermis). This diagnostic tool permits the recognition of morphologic structures not visible by the naked eye, thus opening a new dimension in the analysis of the clinical morphologic features of PSLs. In order to reduce the learning-curve of non-expert clinicians and to mitigate problems inherent in the reliability and reproducibility of the diagnostic criteria used in pattern analysis, several indicative methods based on diagnostic algorithms have been introduced in the last few years.

Definition of an automated Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) system for the comparison of dermoscopic images of pigmented skin lesions.

Background: New generations of image-based diagnostic machines are based on digital technologies for data acquisition; consequently, the diffusion of digital archiving systems for diagnostic exams preservation and cataloguing is rapidly increasing. To overcome the limits of current state of art text-based access methods, we have developed a novel content-based search engine for dermoscopic images to support clinical decision making.

Methods: To this end, we have enrolled, from 2004 to 2008, 3415 caucasian patients and collected 24804 dermoscopic images corresponding to 20491 pigmented lesions with known pathology.

The effect of freezing, freeze-drying and storage on inhibitory half dose (ID(50)) and on cytotoxic concentration (CC(50)) of Phyllantus orbicularis and Punica granatum extracts was studied. Selective index SI=(CC(50) /ID(50)) was considered as the antiviral criterion. Both frozen and freeze-dried extracts were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

Taino Tomato Mottle Virus, a New Bipartite Geminivirus from Cuba.

Geminiviruses have become the most important virus group affecting tomatoes (Lycopersicon lycopersicum (L.) Karsten) in Cuba since they have been detected in all tomato-producing areas, causing serious losses. Recently, a whitefly-transmitted, monopartite geminivirus was detected in Cuba and identified as tomato yellow leaf curl virus-Israel (TYLCV-Is) (1).

Coronary artery diameter and coronary risk factors: a study with ultrafast computed tomography.

Coronary artery dilation has been described as an early effect of atherosclerosis. No noninvasive technique has been available to measure coronary size. In this study coronary diameters were measured in 100 asymptomatic subjects (89 men and 11 women, mean age 40 +/- 6 years) by means of ultrafast computed tomography (UFCT), with 3 mm thick ECG gated scans.

COP-BLAM multidrug infusion chemotherapies for lymphoma: results in a community hospital setting.

Twenty-two patients with malignant lymphoma were treated with three different COP-BLAM infusional chemotherapy protocols at the Jersey Shore Medical Center. The treatment group included 18 patients with large-cell lymphoma, 3 patients with Hodgkin's disease, and 1 patient with composite lymphoma (large-cell lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease). Three patients were treated with COP-BLAM III, 9 with COP-BLAM IV, and 10 with COP-BLAM V.

Voice rehabilitation practices among head and neck surgeons.

Voice rehabilitation practices among head and neck surgeons were surveyed to determine the proportional contribution of various methods of speech support and the impact of recent developments in this field. Of the 400 head and neck surgeons contacted, 212 (53%) responded and 196 provided data. Noninvasive methods of speech support continue to predominate in this country.
