The heat-shock response is conserved amongst practically all organisms. Almost invariably, the massive heat-shock protein (Hsp) synthesis that it induces is subsequently down-regulated, making this a transient, not a sustained, stress response. This study investigated whether the heat-shock response displays any unusual features in the methylotrophic yeast Hansenula polymorpha, since this organism exhibits the highest growth temperature (49-50 degrees C) identified to date for any yeast and grows at 47 degrees C without either thermal death or detriment to final biomass yield.

The use of mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) in pancreas transplantation has increased graft survival and decreased the incidence of acute rejections episodes (ARE), regardless of the choice of calcineurin inhibitor. The combination of MMF with tacrolimus (TAC) is the most common protocol, it is considered the gold standard for new protocols. In the last few years, there have been reports of a small number of patients treated with sirolimus (RAPA), usually combined with TAC.

In experimental models, prolactin (PRL) displays independent hypertrophic effects on the prostate. To investigate whether hyperprolactinemia is associated with prostate enlargement in humans, we designed this open, prospective, case-control study enrolling 20 men with prolactinoma (aged 34 +/- 10 yr) and 20 age-matched healthy men. The endocrine profile and prostate transrectal ultrasonography were performed before and after 12 and 24 months of cabergoline treatment in the patients and at study entry and after 24 months in the controls.

Osteotomy of the proximal femur is performed to treat numerous hip pathologies in order to improve the load axis of the coxofemoral joint, thus improving coverage of the femoral head; despite this, arthrosis-related pathology may progress, and this nearly always results in hip arthroplasty. Many authors report that the time interval between osteotomy and arthroplasty is approximately 5 to 10 years. It is the purpose of this study to evaluate the complications and the clinical and radiographic results of hip arthroplasty performed after proximal femoral osteotomy, comparing them with a control group for hip arthroplasty without previous osteotomy.

Although high-dose methotrexate (HD-MTX) is the most effective drug against primary CNS lymphomas (PCNSL), outcome-determining variables related to its administration schedule have not been defined. The impact on toxicity and outcome of the area under the curve (AUC(MTX)), dose intensity (DI(MTX)) and infusion rate (IR(MTX)) of MTX and plasmatic creatinine clearance (CL(crea)) was investigated in a retrospective series of 45 PCNSL patients treated with three different HD-MTX-based combinations. Anticonvulsants were administered in 31 pts (69%).

Article Synopsis
  • From 1977 to July 2002, Santa Casa of Porto Alegre performed 1,376 renal transplants, with increasing transplant and survival rates each year since 1987.
  • One-year graft survival rates were 90% for living donors and 80% for cadaver donors, showing significant improvement from the earlier period (1977-1995) to the later period (1996-2002).
  • Pediatric patients made up 15.8% of transplants, primarily from living related donors, and there was no significant survival difference between transplants from "ideal" and marginal cadaver donors despite varying risk factors.

Background: Multiple drug allergy syndrome is a clinical condition characterized by reactions against more than one different class of, both pharmacologically and structurally, unrelated drugs. Scanty data are available to date about a multiple drug delayed hypersensitivity syndrome. Our aim was to report the case of a delayed reaction to both beta-methasone (beta-MT) and penicillin-G (pen-G) occurring in the same patient, and analyse beta-MT- and pen-G-specific T-cell Lines (TCLs) with regard to their specificity, phenotype and cytokine profile.

The authors report their experience in the use of extra-long stems for total hip reimplantations, and they then compare them with the results obtained when short or standard stems were used. The use of the extra-long stem is reserved for special cases, such as those where there is osteolysis extending to the proximal femur and diaphysis, distal diaphyseal fractures, and when the trans-femoral technique is used to remove the stem. A total of 246 prosthetic stem reimplantations were carried out between 1985 and 1999, and in most of the cases (86.

The identification of molecular indicators of higher risk for specific subgroups of cancer patients may allow to develop more aggressive therapeutic strategies aimed at cases with the highest likelihood of response. This would avoid unnecessary toxicity to patients and alleviate the burden of cancer care for healthcare systems. Activated oncogenes and mutated tumor suppressor genes are causal determinants of the appearance and progression of tumors in man.

p53 and DNA methylation play key roles in the maintenance of genome stability. In this work, we demonstrate that the two mechanisms are linked and that p53 plays a role in the maintenance of the DNA methylation levels. The loss of p53 was shown to induce loss of DNA methylation in the TROP1 gene, a human cancer-expressed locus that undergoes amplification when hypomethylated.

Metoclopramide hydrochloride (MCPH) is dopamine antagonist antiemetic drug that binds D2 receptor at the central nervous system and peripheral levels, which stimulates the upper gastrointestinal tract motility. It is often used in the management of some forms of nausea and vomiting (1-3). Occupational allergy to drugs is seldom reported.

We have developed a databank screening procedure, the In Silico Trans-splicing Retrieval System (ISTReS), to identify heterologous, spliced mRNAs with potential origin from chromosomal translocations, mRNA trans-splicing and multi-locus transcription. A parsing algorithm to screen cDNA versus genome Blast outputs was implemented. Key filtering criteria were Blast scores of > or =300, match lengths of > or =95% of the query sequences, junction of the two partners at exon-exon borders and concordant 'sense/sense' reading orientation.

The SED1 gene (YDR077W), coding for the major cell wall glycoprotein of Saccharomyces cerevisiae stationary-phase cells, contains two blocks of tandem repeat units located within two distinct regions of the nucleotide sequence. A PCR survey of the SED1 open reading frames (ORFs) of 186 previously uncharacterized grape must isolates of S. cerevisiae yielded 13 PCR profiles arising from different combinations of seven SED1 length variants in individuals homozygous or heterozygous for the gene.

Evidence suggests that ethanol (EtOH) preexposure influences the rewarding valence of subsequent EtOH use. This study was conducted to determine if EtOH preexposure through EtOH/cocaine self-administration facilitates the motivational effects of EtOH alone. Rats self-administered intravenous (iv) EtOH/cocaine combinations (EtOH/Cocaine Fading group; EtOH 125.

The authors report the preliminary results obtained in 347 prosthetic implants with hip arthroplasty with a modular neck. The advantages to using this method are related to the chance to adapt to different anatomical conditions: in particular, in primary arthroplasty a straight neck was used in the majority of cases (83%), while in dysplastic hips a straight neck was used in 47.5% of cases and a retroverse neck (8 degrees or 15 degrees) overall in 40% of cases.

This paper describes the automatic three-dimensional (3D) graphic possibilities that are supplied by the Neurosurgical Deep Recording System (NDRS) to facilitate anatomic-physiological targeting during stereotactic and functional neurosurgery using depth recording. This software has been developed to substitute the complex electronic equipment ordinarily used for deep brain electrical recording, display and processing by a personal computer. It may also help to improve on-line graphic analysis, automatic management of the recorded information and flexibility to implement different forms of signal analysis.
