From Ridge 2 Reef: An interdisciplinary model for training the next generation of environmental problem solvers.

Regional and global environmental challenges have become increasingly complex and require broader solutions than a single discipline can provide. Although there is a growing need for interdisciplinary research, many graduate education programs still train students within the confines of a particular discipline or specialty. The Ridge 2 Reef research traineeship program at the University of California, Irvine, aimed to provide transferable and interdisciplinary skill training to prepare graduate students from different disciplines to address current and future environmental challenges.

Biological Properties of Bioceramic Sealers on Osteoblastic Cells: A Comparative Study.

This study aimed to assess the biological properties of two ready-to-use bioceramic sealers (EndoSequence BC Sealer - EBCS; Bio-C Sealer - BCS) on osteoblastic lineage cells. MC3T3 osteoblast-like cells were exposed to extracts of bioceramic materials. Cytotoxicity was evaluated using the MTT method, genotoxicity was assessed by the micronucleus test and the expression of BMP1, BMP2 and ALP was measured by RT-qPCR, after 1, 3 and 7 days.

X-linked sideroblastic anemia (XLSA) is a congenital anemia caused by mutations in ALAS2, a gene responsible for heme synthesis. Treatments are limited to pyridoxine supplements and blood transfusions, offering no definitive cure except for allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, only accessible to a subset of patients. The absence of a suitable animal model has hindered the development of gene therapy research for this disease.

Impact of live yeast and selenium supplementation on blood metabolites and rumen pH of young bulls after long-transport to the fattening unit.

Long-distance transport and the receiving phase at the fattening unit are sources of stress for young beef cattle. This randomised controlled study involved 80 Charolais young bulls that underwent 12 h of transport from France to Italy and aimed at testing whether the animals have some benefits from the supplementation of live yeast and selenium through slow-release boluses and diet. The bulls were randomly allocated into two supplementation groups of 40 animals each, named Yeast and Control groups.

According to a recent hypothesis, premotor RBD (pRBD) is a marker of the PD body-first subtype, where synucleinopathy originates from the peripheral autonomic nervous system. Conversely, in the brain-first subtype, pathology would arise in the brain.

Executive functions disorders in children with frontal and temporal epilepsy.

Introduction: Children with focal epilepsy often present with executive functions (EFs) deficits. EFs deficits can contribute to adaptive challenges and have a negative impact on academic achievement. The purpose of this study was to investigate the EFs profiles of children diagnosed with frontal lobe epilepsy or temporal lobe epilepsy.

Fostering collective action for adolescent well-being: citizen science in a Colombian semi-rural area.

We present findings from the Our Voice in Barú project, examining adolescent engagement in citizen science to address environmental and social factors affecting well-being in a semi-rural Afro-descendant community in Latin America. The project aimed to identify barriers and enablers of well-being, informing adolescent-led actions for sustainable environmental changes relevant to adolescent health. Utilizing the Our Voice citizen science method, which involved technology-enabled walks, participatory cartography workshops and community meetings, we engaged adolescents and other community members.

The predictive role of the TAPSE/sPAP ratio for cardiovascular events and mortality in systemic sclerosis with pulmonary hypertension.

Introduction: Reduced TAPSE/sPAP ratio has recently emerged as a predictive parameter risk factor for PH, however its role in SSc has been poorly investigated. The aim of the study was to investigate the prognostic value of the TAPSE/sPAP ratio for the prediction of mortality and cardiovascular events in patients with SSc complicated by PH. A comparison between SSc patients with PAH (SSc-PAH) and those with PH and significant ILD (SSc-PH) was also carried out.

Gaucher disease in Brazil: a comprehensive 16 year retrospective study on survival, cost, and treatment insights.

Background: Gaucher's disease (GD), a lysosomal storage disorder, poses significant treatment challenges. This 23-year study assesses survival rates and treatment efficacy in Brazilian GD patients, integrating data from a 16-year cohort (2000-2015) and the TABNET/DATASUS medicines distribution data (1999-2022).

Objective: To investigate the survival of GD patients in Brazil, identifying key risk factors and evaluating the impact of treatments funded by the Brazilian National Health System (SUS).

Detection of Ventricular Tachycardia by an Implantable Cardiac Monitor 8 Months Post-myocardial Infarction.

Following a non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (MI), a 68-year-old hypertensive, severely obese woman with 45% left ventricular ejection fraction underwent an implantable cardiac monitor (ICM) insertion. After 8 months, the ICM remotely transmitted multiple non-sustained ventricular tachycardia episodes. Symptomatic during these events, the patient underwent an invasive electrophysiologic stimulation, which induced ventricular arrhythmia.

Over the last few decades, advancements in process safety and quality methods have been significantly improved, yet new challenges continue to emerge in the sustainable food supply chain. This study aimed to investigate some physicochemical and microbiological parameters impacting meat products, particularly cooked sausages, within a sustainable supply chain, focusing on quality, spoilage populations, and syneresis formation under vacuum conditions. A comprehensive analysis was conducted on 355 samples collected over four seasons using high-throughput sequencing (16S/ITS) and microbiological and physicochemical [pH and water activity (a)] assessments.

Intravenous Sedation and Analgesia in a Pediatric Emergency Department: A Retrospective Descriptive Study.

Background Painful procedures in the pediatric emergency department often require the use of sedation and analgesia to ensure adequate pain control, a right of children and adolescents. This study aims to describe the procedural sedation and analgesia with intravenous medications performed in a pediatric emergency department. Methods This is a retrospective descriptive study of intravenous sedoanalgesia used in a pediatric emergency department of a level II district hospital in the Lisbon metropolitan area from October 2018 to December 2023.

Kikuchi-Fujimoto - an enigmatic and rare disease: a report of 3 cases and brief review of the literature.

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is a rare and benign condition mainly characterized by fever and lymphadenopathies. Although many studies have been carried out over time, its aetiology remains unclear, with infectious and autoimmune processes being hypothesized as the main causes. We report three cases of Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease.

Prediction of extracapsular extension of prostate cancer by MRI radiomic signature: a systematic review.

Unlabelled: The objective of this review is to survey radiomics signatures for detecting pathological extracapsular extension (pECE) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with prostate cancer (PCa) who underwent prostatectomy. Scientific Literature databases were used to search studies published from January 2007 to October 2023. All studies related to PCa MRI staging and using radiomics signatures to detect pECE after prostatectomy were included.

Metabolic profile of Charolais young bulls transported over long-distance.

Long-distance transport can cause stress to beef cattle impairing health and growth performances. This study aimed to deepen the knowledge of the effects of long-distance transport on young bulls' metabolic profile to identify reliable blood parameters for monitoring their health and welfare. Eighty Charolais young bulls, transported for 12 hours to the final fattening unit, were weighed and blood sampled at three time intervals: before leaving the commingling centre (day -1), upon arrival at the fattening unit (day 0), and 7 days post-arrival (day 7).

The factors associated with unplanned higher-level re-amputation (UHRA) and one-year mortality among patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) after lower extremity amputation are poorly understood. This was a single-center retrospective study of patients who underwent amputations for CLTI between 2014 and 2017. Unadjusted bivariate analyses and adjusted odds ratios (AOR) from logistic regression models were used to assess associations between pre-amputation risk factors and outcomes (UHRA and one-year mortality).

Low Effectiveness of Mid-Infrared Spectroscopy Prediction Models of Mediterranean Italian Buffalo Bulk Milk Coagulation Traits.

This study evaluated the potential use of mid-infrared spectroscopy to predict milk coagulation traits in bulk milk from Mediterranean Italian buffaloes. A total of 1736 bulk milk samples from 55 farms in central Italy were collected during the official milk quality testing system. The prediction models were developed based on modified partial least-squares regression with 75% of the samples and validated with the remaining samples.
