Background: Pregabalin is a drug approved for neuropathic pain, epilepsy and general anxiety disorder. However, pregabalin is also an increasing cause of diversion and misuse, and, for this reason, the French health authorities have decided in 2021 to classify it as a narcotic drug, requiring secured prescription pads. Our study aimed to evaluate the impact of this measure on pregabalin dispensation patterns.

Article Synopsis
  • Asymptomatic carriers of Plasmodium falciparum play a crucial role in malaria transmission, prompting a study to assess malaria infection levels among household members of children receiving seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC).
  • The study, which involved 745 participants and used various diagnostic tests, found that 26.58% of participants carried asexual forms of the parasite, with the highest prevalence (35.76%) among children aged 5 to 15 years.
  • The ultrasensitive rapid diagnostic test (usRDT) showed greater sensitivity for detecting malaria compared to the standard rapid diagnostic test (rRDT), suggesting that usRDT is more effective for community-based screening and treatment strategies.

Background: Rapid point-of-care tests for malaria are now widely used in many countries to guide the initial clinical management of patients presenting with febrile illness. With China having recently achieved malaria elimination, better understanding regarding the identity and distribution of major non-malarial causes of febrile illnesses is of particular importance to inform evidence-based empirical treatment policy.

Methods: A systematic review of published literature was undertaken to characterise the spectrum of pathogens causing non-malaria febrile illness in China (1980-2015).

Current malaria elimination targets must withstand a colossal challenge-resistance to the current gold standard antimalarial drug, namely artemisinin derivatives. If artemisinin resistance significantly expands to Africa or India, cases and malaria-related deaths are set to increase substantially. Spatial information on the changing levels of artemisinin resistance in Southeast Asia is therefore critical for health organisations to prioritise malaria control measures, but available data on artemisinin resistance are sparse.

Article Synopsis
  • Aortic valve calcification (AVC) was studied in patients with bioprosthetic valves to assess its impact on patient prognosis.
  • In a study of 361 patients who had valve replacements, AVC was found to be significantly higher in those with structural valve degeneration (SVD).
  • The results indicate that AVC greater than 100 Agatston units is correlated with worse health outcomes and increased risk of mortality and cardiovascular events, making CT scans a valuable tool for evaluation.

Surveillance for genetic markers of resistance can provide valuable information on the likely efficacy of antimalarials but needs to be targeted to ensure optimal use of resources. We conducted a systematic search and review of publications in seven databases to compile resistance marker data from studies in India. The sample collection from the studies identified from this search was conducted between 1994 and 2020, and these studies were published between 1994 and 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the biomechanical properties of five stents used for pre-stenting the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) prior to valve implantation.
  • Significant findings indicate that while radial and longitudinal elastic recoils are low across all tested stents, there are notable differences in radial resistance and bending stiffness.
  • The research proposes an algorithm to aid clinicians in selecting stents based on their required radial force and flexibility, especially in varying vessel conditions.

Selection of resistant malaria strains occurs when parasites are exposed to inadequate antimalarial drug concentrations. The proportion of uncomplicated falciparum malaria patients at risk of being sub-optimally dosed with the current World Health Organization (WHO) recommended artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) is unknown. This study aims to estimate this proportion and the excess number of treatment failures (recrudescences) associated with sub-optimal dosing in Sub-Saharan Africa.
