The development of molecular switches with tunable properties has garnered considerable interest over several decades. A novel spin-crossover (SCO) material based on iron(II) complexes incorporating 4-acetylpyridine (4-acpy) and [Hg(SCN)] anions was synthesized and formulated as [Fe(4-acpy)][Hg(μ-SCN)] (1). Compound 1 is crystallized in a three-dimensional network in the non-centrosymmetric orthorhombic space group Pna2 with two octahedral [Fe(4-acpy)(NCS)] entities featuring two distinct Fe centers (Fe1 and Fe2).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFMany rubidium manganese hexacyanoferrate materials, with the general formula Rb Mn[Fe(CN)]·HO, exhibit diverse charge-transfer-based functionalities due to the bistability between a high temperature Mn( = 5/2)Fe( = 1/2) cubic phase and a low-temperature Mn( = 2)Fe( = 0) tetragonal phase. The collective Jahn-Teller distortion on the Mn sites is responsible for the cubic-to-tetragonal ferroelastic phase transition, which is associated with the appearance of ferroelastic domains. In this study, we use X-ray diffraction to reveal the coexistence of 3 types of ferroelastic tetragonal domains and estimate the spatial extension of the strain around the domain walls, which represents about 30% of the volume of the crystal.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Improvements in oxygenation and lung mechanics with prone position (PP) in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are inconstant. The objectives of the study were (i) to identify baseline variables, including the recruitment-to-inflation ratio (R/I), associated with a positive response to PP in terms of oxygenation (improvement of the ratio of arterial oxygen partial pressure over the inspired oxygen fraction (PaO/FiO) ≥ 20 mmHg) and lung mechanics; (ii) to evaluate whether the response to the previous PP session is associated with the response to the next session.
Methods: In this prospective, observational, single-center study in patients who underwent PP for ARDS due to COVID-19, respiratory variables were assessed just before PP and at the end of the session.

Background: Interstitial photodynamic therapy (iPDT), inserting optical fibers inside brain tumors, has been proposed for more than 30 years. While a promising therapeutic option, it is still an experimental treatment, with different ways of application, depending on the team performing the technique.
Objective: In this systematic review, we reported the patient selection process, the treatment parameters, the potential adverse events and the oncological outcomes related to iPDT treatment applied to brain tumors.
Background: Through venous contraction, norepinephrine (NE) increases stressed blood volume and mean systemic pressure (Pms) and exerts a "fluid-like" effect. When both fluid and NE are administered, Pms may not only result from the sum of the effects of both drugs. Indeed, norepinephrine may enhance the effects of volume expansion: because fluid dilutes into a more constricted, smaller, venous network, fluid may increase Pms to a larger extent at a higher than at a lower dose of NE.

Some data suggest that early administration of diuretics would shorten the duration of mechanical ventilation.
