Background: Cancer patients benefit from Virtual Reality (VR) in burdensome situations, but evidence is scarce for palliative situations. Based on earlier work in palliative care, individualized VR interventions like seeing the patient's home may address a patient's wish to be at home and thus have a greater effect compared to standard VR content. Yet, some patients and relatives may be concerned about their privacy.

Impact of metadata in multimodal classification of bone tumours.

Unlabelled: The accurate classification of bone tumours is crucial for guiding clinical decisions regarding treatment and follow-up. However, differentiating between various tumour types is challenging due to the rarity of certain entities, high intra-class variability, and limited training data in clinical practice. This study proposes a multimodal deep learning model that integrates clinical metadata and X-ray imaging to improve the classification of primary bone tumours.

Identifying the immunoglobulin G transporter in equine tissues: A look at the neonatal Fc receptor.

The neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn) is the receptor responsible for bidirectional transport of immunoglobulin G (IgG) across cells, maintenance of IgG levels in serum, and assisting with antigen presentation. Unfortunately, little is known about FcRn in horses. Therefore, the objective of this study was to provide fundamental information regarding the location of FcRn in equine tissues.

Contraction assessment of abdominal muscles using automated segmentation designed for wearable ultrasound applications.

Purpose: Wearable ultrasound devices can be used to continuously monitor muscle activity. One possible application is to provide real-time feedback during physiotherapy, to show a patient whether an exercise is performed correctly. Algorithms which automatically analyze the data can be of importance to overcome the need for manual assessment and annotations and speed up evaluations especially when considering real-time video sequences.

Intradental mechano-nociceptors serve as sentinels that prevent tooth damage.

Pain is the anticipated output of the trigeminal sensory neurons that innervate the tooth's vital interior ; however, the contribution of intradental neurons to healthy tooth sensation has yet to be defined. Here, we employ in vivo Ca imaging to identify and define a population of myelinated high-threshold mechanoreceptors (intradental HTMRs) that detect superficial structural damage of the tooth and initiate jaw opening to protect teeth from damage. Intradental HTMRs remain inactive when direct forces are applied to the intact tooth but become responsive to forces when the structural integrity of the tooth is compromised, and the dentin or pulp is exposed.

Preoperative ultrasound elastography for postoperative pancreatic fistula prediction after pancreatoduodenectomy: A prospective study.

Background: Postoperative pancreatic fistulas are the most frequent major complications after pancreatoduodenectomy. The soft pancreatic texture is a critical, independent risk factor for postoperative pancreatic fistulas after pancreatoduodenectomy. The current gold standard for postoperative pancreatic fistula risk evaluation consists of the surgeon's intraoperative palpation of the pancreatic texture and, thus, lacks objectivity.

The Role of Urine and Washing Cytology in Primary Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumours.

Introduction: Urine cytology (UC) is a recommended tool for the diagnosis of urothelial malignancies. Thus far, no specific recommendations regarding the role of washing cytology (WC) have been included in the guidelines. The goal of our study was to analyse the relationship between the histology of transurethrally (transurethral resection of the bladder [TURBT]) resected bladder tumours (BCa) and intraoperative UC or WC findings.

Survey of New Zealand consumer attitudes to consumption of meat and meat alternatives.

This study examined consumers' consumption, motivations, and concerns regarding meat and meat alternatives by means of an online survey of 1061 New Zealand consumers and review of literature. Outcomes of the survey indicate New Zealanders are overwhelmingly omnivorous (93%), regard taste as the most important factor in their meat purchasing decision followed by price and freshness and consider environmental impact and social responsibility of less importance. Those surveyed indicated willingness to pay 17-24% more for food safety and sustainability related meat attributes.

TPX2 expression as a negative predictor of gemcitabine efficacy in pancreatic cancer.

Background: Targeting protein for Xenopus kinesin-like protein 2 (TPX2) overexpression in human tumours is associated with increased malignancy. Its effect on gemcitabine resistance in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has not been studied yet.

Methods: The prognostic impact of TPX2 expression was examined in the tumour tissue of 139 patients with advanced PDAC (aPDAC) treated within the AIO-PK0104 trial or translational trials and of 400 resected PDAC (rPDAC) patients.

Background: Effective symptom control is a stated goal of palliative care (PC) to improve quality of life for terminally ill patients. Virtual reality (VR) provides temporary escapes from pharmacologically resistant pain and allows for experiences and journeys patients may not access in any other way. Enabling wishes through virtual worlds may also offer additional benefits such as controlling psychological and physical symptoms.

Ketamine-Induced Cystitis: A Comprehensive Review of the Urologic Effects of This Psychoactive Drug.

Ketamine is a common medical anesthetic and analgesic but is becoming more widely used as a recreational drug. Significant side effects on the urinary tract are associated with frequent recreational ketamine use most notably ketamine-induced cystitis (KIC). Regular ketamine consumption has been shown to increase the risk of cystitis symptoms by 3- to 4-fold, and cessation of ketamine use is usually associated with improvement of symptoms.

Cerebrospinal Fluid Leaks: A Case Series of Sinus Opacification on Computed Tomography (CT) Imaging.

Introduction: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks occur when fluid seeps through a dural or skull base defect, typically in the nose or ear. CSF leaks commonly are identified and diagnosed by use of computed tomography (CT) and CT cisternogram. CT findings suggestive of a CSF leak include a skull-based bone defect along with opacification of the contiguous sinus.

C4 photosynthesis allows faster photosynthetic rates and higher water and nitrogen use efficiency than C3 photosynthesis, but at the cost of lower quantum yield due to the energy requirement of its biochemical carbon concentration mechanism. It has also been suspected that its operation may be impaired in low irradiance. To investigate fluxes under moderate and low irradiance, maize (Zea mays) was grown at 550 µmol photons m-2 s-l and 13CO2 pulse-labeling was performed at growth irradiance or several hours after transfer to 160 µmol photons m-2 s-1.

Serum biomarker panel diagnostics in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma: the clinical utility of soluble interleukins, IFN-γ, TNF-α and PD-1/PD-L1 in comparison to established serum tumor markers.

Optimal cut-off values to differentiate prognostic subgroups with significantly different overall survival (OS) were determined by receiver operator characteristics and Youden Index analysis.

Adjuvant gemcitabine (aGC) is one standard of care after pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) resection. No biomarker for its efficacy is established. As bacteria mediate gemcitabine resistance, we analyzed whether lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as surrogate for bacterial colonization is prognostic in PDAC patients treated with aGC or without aGC adjuvant gemcitabine.

The impact of adjuvant therapy on outcome in UICC stage I pancreatic cancer.

Adjuvant chemotherapy has become standard of care for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) as it improves patient outcome. However, its clinical meaning in early-stage, UICC I tumors remains uncertain. We examined the effect of adjuvant therapy on disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) of UICC stage I PDAC patients treated at an academic tertiary care center between 2000 and 2016.

Mediastinal Rhabdomyosarcoma Feeding Off the Left Anterior Descending Artery.

We report the rare case of a 51-year-old patient with a 15 cm mediastinal rhabdomyosarcoma with blood supply from the left anterior descending artery presenting as a large mass including the pericardium with extensive contact to the epicardium compressing heart and left lung. The tumor was successfully removed through median sternotomy, blunt dissection from the heart and the left lung, resection of the infiltrated pericardium, and ligation of the tumor-feeding vessels using off-pump stabilizers. Histopathological examination revealed a spindle cell rhabdomyosarcoma with R0 resection.

Science Bootcamp Goes Virtual: a Compressed, Interdisciplinary Online CURE Promotes Psychosocial Gains in STEM Transfer Students.

Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) are well-documented as high-impact practices that can broaden participation and success in STEM. Drawing primarily from a community of practice theoretical framework, we previously developed an interdisciplinary CURE course (Science Bootcamp) for STEM majors focused entirely on the scientific process. Among first-year students, Science Bootcamp leads to psychosocial gains and increased retention.

A limited role of NKCC1 in telencephalic glutamatergic neurons for developing hippocampal network dynamics and behavior.

NKCC1 is the primary transporter mediating chloride uptake in immature principal neurons, but its role in the development of in vivo network dynamics and cognitive abilities remains unknown. Here, we address the function of NKCC1 in developing mice using electrophysiological, optical, and behavioral approaches. We report that NKCC1 deletion from telencephalic glutamatergic neurons decreases in vitro excitatory actions of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and impairs neuronal synchrony in neonatal hippocampal brain slices.

Characterization of Hippocampal Adult-borne Granule Cells in a Transient Cerebral Ischemia Model.

Long-term consequences of stroke significantly impair the quality of life in a growing population of stroke survivors. Hippocampal adult neurogenesis has been hypothesized to play a role in the pathophysiology of cognitive and neuropsychiatric long-term sequelae of stroke. Reliable animal models of stroke are paramount to understanding their biomechanisms and to advancing therapeutic strategies.
