Towards a Better Use of Antimicrobials on Farms: Insights from a Participatory Approach in the French Pig and Poultry Sectors.

Despite the strong decrease in antimicrobial use in the French poultry and pig sectors over the last decade, room for improvement remains. A participatory approach was set up in France, involving representatives of veterinarians, the pig and poultry industries, technical institutes, the French Ministry of Agriculture, and researchers, to further improve how antimicrobials are used on farms. By successively defining a shared, long-term vision of future antimicrobial use on farms, identifying lock-in mechanisms impeding this future vision from being realized, and articulating practical questions on how to move in the desired direction, the group rapidly reached a consensus.

Perianal block with ropivacaine as a supplement to anaesthesia in proctological surgery: double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial (PERCEPT).

Background: The benefit of a perianal block as an adjunct to general or regional anaesthesia is debated. This RCT aimed to compare pain at 24 h and up to 14 days after proctological surgery in patients with and without a perianal block.

Methods: Between January 2018 and April 2019, patients were allocated to receive a perianal block with ropivacaine or placebo as an adjunct to anaesthesia.

Unusual intraoperative finding of abnormal retroperitoneal ileum: a case report.

A 52-year-old female patient diagnosed with an adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon underwent anterior resection with direct anastomosis. Intraoperatively, we found the ileum completely retroperitonealized. Previously, the patient was asymptomatic and no congenital syndromes were diagnosed.

Background: Renal angiomyolipomas (AMLs) are a major clinical feature in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). Spontaneous bleeding can be life threatening, and appropriate information and proper surveillance and management are important to limit morbidity and mortality. Because TSC is a rare disease, patients are at risk of suboptimal medical management.

Objective: To estimate the prevalence of renal angiomyolipomas (AMLs) and AML-related bleedings among patients with tuberous sclerosis complex and to gather information about associated treatments.

Methods: A questionnaire survey was undertaken by the French Reference Centre for Tuberous Sclerosis Complex and distributed through university hospitals and the patients' association (2009-2011). The questionnaire was then distributed to patients registered by the Norwegian National Centre for Rare Epilepsy-Related Disorders (2013-2014).

Mechanical bowel preparation and antimicrobial prophylaxis in elective colorectal surgery in Switzerland--a survey.

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the use of mechanical bowel preparation (MBP) and antimicrobial prophylaxis in elective colorectal surgery in Switzerland.

Methods: Ninety-eight heads of surgical departments in Switzerland and 42 visceral surgeons in private practice were asked to answer an 18-item questionnaire in October 2008 about arguments in favor of or against MBP. The participants also indicated whether they use MBP and antimicrobial prophylaxis in colorectal surgery, and if so, what agents were used.

Laparoscopic antireflux surgery: long-term outcomes and quality of life.

Background: To evaluate the outcome of antireflux surgery, we assessed disease-specific symptoms and quality of life of all patients treated by laparoscopic fundoplication at our center between 1992 and 2002.

Long-term results after stapled hemorrhoidopexy: high patient satisfaction despite frequent postoperative symptoms.

Purpose: Stapled hemorrhoidopexy has been demonstrated to be advantageous in the short term compared with the traditional techniques. We aimed to evaluate long-term results after stapled hemorrhoidopexy and to assess patient satisfaction in association with postoperative hemorrhoidal symptoms.

Methods: This prospective study included 216 patients with Grade 2 or 3 hemorrhoids, who had stapled hemorrhoidopexy using the circular stapled technique.

Outcome and quality of life after open surgery versus endoscopic stapler-assisted esophagodiverticulostomy for Zenker's diverticulum.

Two techniques for treatment of Zenker's diverticulum, endoscopic stapler-assisted esophagodiverticulostomy and open cricopharyngeal myotomy by transcervical approach, were compared with regard to patient satisfaction and quality of life. First description of a PEComa (perivascular epithelioid cell tumor) of the colon: report of a case and review of the literature.

We describe a young female patient suffering from a PEComa (perivascular epithelioid cell tumor) of the cecum, incidentally found at an examination made by her family physician. The perivascular epithelioid cell tumor is a very rare tumor, until today reported in a few cases in falciform ligament, uterus, jejunum, terminal ileum, rectum, liver, kidney, lung, pancreas, prostate, and soft tissue of the thigh.
