Case Presentation: A 54-year-old male patient presenting probable multiple system atrophy with predominant parkinsonism who underwent bilateral deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) is presented. The patient had dominant freezing of gait (FOG), levodopa-resistant bradykinesia, and autonomic disturbances, but with a good cognitive condition.

Methods: The patient underwent bilateral DBS of the PPN, which ended with modest benefits.

Objectives: This retrospective study was designed to investigate the role of fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) in determination of recurrence and/or intraabdominal metastasis in patients with ovarian cancer having increased tumor markers or suspicious lesion detected by a contrast-enhanced abdominal CT (ceCT).

Materials And Methods: A total of 34 female patients who were treated for histopathologically proven ovarian cancer, underwent PET/CT examination for restaging and suspected recurrence. Patients with pathology report, tumor marker levels, ceCT and PET/CT performed within one month were included in the study.

Gender, age adjusted, population based reference ranges are necessary to use insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) as a diagnostic marker or for therapeutic monitoring in growth hormone (GH) related diseases. The aim of the present study was to describe the serum IGF-1 distribution and to calculate age and gender specific reference values for Caucasian adult population. A representative sample of 1002 male and 1039 female, totally 2041 participants aged above 18 years old was examined.

It has been shown that anesthetic requirements during liver transplantation are inversely proportional to the degree of hepatic dysfunction. We investigate alterations during the three phases of requirements for intraoperative isoflurane within the target of 40 to 55 Bispectral Index (BIS) values concerning patients with end-stage liver disease who are undergoing liver transplantation. After faculty ethics committee approval, we studied 50 patients of (age range, 18 to 65 years) who were undergoing liver transplantation.

Aim: It has been reported that people with asthma may have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders due to direct involvement of common inflammatory mediators. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is also characterized by inflammation, In this study, we hypothesised that the prevalence of MetS would increase in patients with asthma. Based on this, we evaluated the prevalence of MetS in patients with asthma and the relationship between asthma and cardiometabolic risk factors.

We use ultrafast laser pulses to experimentally demonstrate that the second-order optical response of bulk single crystals of the topological insulator Bi(2)Se(3) is sensitive to its surface electrons. By performing surface doping dependence measurements as a function of photon polarization and sample orientation we show that second harmonic generation can simultaneously probe both the surface crystalline structure and the surface charge of Bi(2)Se(3). Furthermore, we find that second harmonic generation using circularly polarized photons reveals the time-reversal symmetry properties of the system and is surprisingly robust against surface charging, which makes it a promising tool for spectroscopic studies of topological surfaces and buried interfaces.

Background: The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate our approach to the diagnosis and treatment of penile fracture.

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the results of 107 patients with penile fracture treated in our clinic between January 1990 and January 2009. Patient age, etiology of each fracture, history, physical examination results, radiologic findings, type of treatment, and postoperative complications were recorded.

Purpose: The most significant application of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is in transformers and capacitors. Therefore, power plants are important suspected sources for entry of PCBs into the environment. In this context, the levels and distribution of PCBs in sediment, soil, ash, and sludge samples were investigated around Seyitömer thermal power plant, Kütahya, Turkey.

Introduction: Disorders of sexual development (DSD) occur when the appearance of the internal and/or external genitalia is at variance with normal development for either sex. We reviewed the characteristics of patients with DSD.

Patients: Two hundred and eight children aged from newborn to 19 years with DSD from 1990 to 2008.

Information on temporal distribution of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the coastal sediments of Mediterranean Sea, Mersin was compiled using data published between 1980 and 2009, and the present study. The first congener specific PCB results from the region yield concentration levels of Σ(41)PCBs in sediments ranging from 0.61 to 1.

Infections in solid-organ transplant recipients are the most important causes of morbidity and mortality. A primary goal in organ transplant is the prevention or effective treatment of infection, which is the most common life-threatening complication of long-term immunosuppressive therapy. A 21-year-old woman who underwent heart transplant 3 years previous owing to dilated cardiomyopathy was referred to our hospital with symptoms of high fever and cough.

Objective: Heparin has been shown to be a strong inhibitor of the proliferation of several cell types. In this in vitro study, we investigated whether different heparin concentrations can affect the cell cycle of lymphoblasts in newly diagnosed acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients.

Methods: Lymphoblasts were incubated in different heparin concentrations (0, 10, 20 U/ml), and the percentages of lymphoblasts in each phase of the cell cycle were simultaneously measured by flow cytometry at 0, 1, and 2 hours (h).

A previously healthy girl, age 3 years 9 months, presented with right-sided hemiparesis and seizures. Ischemic infarction was confirmed through magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance angiography. Extensive evaluation to discover the underlying etiologies and risk factors predisposing this patient to stroke included coagulation defects, cardiac anomalies, congenital inborn metabolism deficiency, and infections and trauma.

Objective: Treatment of perianal abscesses requires prompt surgical drainage and antimicrobial therapy. However, we should encourage the selective use of antimicrobial agents on a case-by-case basis, especially because there is no evidence that uncomplicated perianal abscesses can be safely treated only with drainage. For this reason, it is important to identify the causative organisms; therefore, we accessed the microbiological analysis of these patients.

We report a phenotypically normal couple with repeated spontaneous abortions and without other clinical features. Clinical, hematological, biochemical, and endocrinological aspects of the couple did not reveal any abnormalities. The karyotype of the wife was normal (46,XX), while the husband was found to have an abnormal karyotype, 47,XY,+der(22)mat.

Objective: Fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake is frequently observed in lung hilus. This finding causes difficulties during the interpretation. Our objective was to evaluate the features of FDG uptake in lung hilus associated with benign or malignant etiology in patients with thoracic and non-thoracic tumors.

Context: There are controversial results and insufficient knowledge in the literature about the genetics of diabetes mellitus complications in the Turkish population and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) gene polymorphisms may act as a potential modifier of diabetic vascular complications.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the association between eNOS G894T polymorphisms and diabetes-related diseases.

Design: A Turkish case-control study was designed.

We reviewed cytogenetic studies performed on 4216 patients who were referred to the Cytogenetics Unit at Dicle University Hospital, Diyarbair, Southeast Turkey, between 2000 and 2009. The cases were grouped according to the reason of referral for cytogenetic analysis. The frequencies of the different types of numerical and structural abnormalities were determined, and the relative frequency of cases with abnormal karyotypes was calculated in each group.
