Soluble TWEAK and PTX3 in nondialysis CKD patients: impact on endothelial dysfunction and cardiovascular outcomes.

Background And Objectives: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) conveys high mortality rates. Soluble TNF-like weak inducer of apoptosis (sTWEAK) and long pentraxin 3 (PTX3) are predictors of mortality in dialysis patients and determinants of endothelial dysfunction. Now, we hypothesize that both sTWEAK and PTX3 act as biomarkers of cardiovascular outcomes in nondialysis CKD patients.

In vitro growth stimulatory and in vivo wound healing studies on cycloartane-type saponins of Astragalus genus.

Aim Of The Study: The present study was undertaken to evaluate the wound healing effects of the four chief saponins of Astragalus species [cycloastragenol (CA), astragaloside IV (AG), cyclocephaloside I (CCI) and cyclocanthoside E (CCE)].

Material And Methods: Effects of cell viability and proliferation of the isolated compounds were evaluated by the MTT assay on human keratinocyte. The wound healing activity was studied by using in vitro wound healing, proliferation and migration scratch assay.

Application of the new pediatric criteria and Tel Hashomer criteria in heterozygous patients with clinical features of FMF.

Recently, a new set of criteria was established for the diagnosis of familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) in childhood. The aim of this study is to validate the new criteria set among heterozygous patients with clinical features of FMF. The study group consisted of FMF patients, who had a mutation at a single allele, who were followed in four pediatric nephrology-rheumatology centers in Turkey.

In vivo evolutionary engineering of a boron-resistant bacterium: Bacillus boroniphilus.

Boron is an industrially and biologically important element. However, the mechanisms of boron tolerance and its transport in bacteria and many other living systems are still not clearly understood. In this study, the boron resistance level of a boron-tolerant bacterium, Bacillus boroniphilus DSM 17376, was improved up to 300 mmol l(-1) boron, by employing an in vivo evolutionary engineering strategy based on batch selection under continuous exposure to gradually increasing boron stress levels.

Guillain-barré syndrome after thrombolysis with streptokinase.

Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is an eponym for a heterogeneous group of immune-mediated peripheral neuropathies. We describe a case of GBS in a patient who recieved intravenous streptokinase therapy for acute anterior myocardial infarction. Clinical symptoms are thought to result from streptokinase-antibody complex mediated damage to the local blood-nerve barrier.

Coronary-cameral fistula with angina pectoris.

Coronary-cameral fistula (CCF) is an anomalous connection between a coronary artery and cardiac chamber. Most of CCFs are discovered incidentally during angiographic evaluation for coronary vascular disorder. We report a case of CCF with angina pectoris.

Percutaneous coronary intervention of a single coronary artery arising from the right sinus of Valsalva.

Anomalous origin of the left main coronary artery from the right sinus of Valsalva is extremely rare when not associated with other congenital cardiac anomalies. In this report we present a patient with a single coronary ostium, with both the left and right coronary artery systems arising from it. The right coronary artery was found to contain a significant flow-limiting lesion that was successfully treated with percutaneous coronary intervention.

Treatment of intrabony periodontal defects with platelet-rich plasma versus platelet-poor plasma combined with a bovine-derived xenograft: a controlled clinical trial.

Background: The purpose of this study is to assess the healing outcomes of intrabony defects after treatment with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) versus platelet-poor plasma (PPP) combined with bovine-derived xenograft (BDX).

Methods: Using a split-mouth design, a total of 79 intrabony defects with an intrabony component of ≥3 mm in 20 patients were treated either with PRP/BDX (group 1) or PPP/BDX (group 2). At baseline and 12 months after surgery, plaque and sulcus bleeding indices, probing depth (PD), relative attachment level, recession, and probing and radiographic bone levels were recorded.

Hereditary renal tubular disorders in Turkey: demographic, clinical, and laboratory features.

Background: The Turkish Renal Tubular Disorders Working Group aimed to form a patient registry database and gathered demographic, clinical, and laboratory data in various hereditary renal tubular disorders (HRTDs).

Methods: A questionnaire comprising HRTDs was sent to the centers. The cohort was composed of 226 patients (109 girls, 117 boys).

Influence of body mass index on outcome of the mechanically ventilated patients.

Background: There are limited data on the impact of body mass index on outcomes in mechanically ventilated patients.

Methods: Secondary analysis of a cohort including 4698 patients mechanically ventilated. Patients were screened daily for management of mechanical ventilation, complications (acute respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis, ventilator associated pneumonia, barotrauma), organ failure (cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, hepatic, haematological) and mortality in the intensive care unit.

Quality of life and related variables in patients with ankylosing spondylitis.

Objectives: To evaluate quality of life (QoL) and related variables in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a chronic inflammatory disease of the spine.

Methods: Nine-hundred and sixty-two patients with AS from the Turkish League Against Rheumatism AS Registry, who fulfilled the modified New York criteria, were enrolled. The patients were evaluated using the Assessment of SpondyloArthritis International Society core outcome domains including Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), fatigue (BASDAI-question 1), pain (last week/spine/due to AS), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrology Index (BASMI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Radiology Index (BASRI), Maastricht Ankylosing Spondylitis Enthesitis Score (MASES) and two QoL questionnaires (the disease-specific ASQoL and generic the Short Form-36 [SF-36]).

The ankle-foot orthosis improves balance and reduces fall risk of chronic spastic hemiparetic patients.

Background: Ankle foot orthoses (AFO) are commonly used orthotic device in order to restore the ankle foot function and to improve the balance and gait in post-stroke hemiparetic patients. However, there remain some discussions about their effectiveness on long term hemiparetic patients who had mild to moderate spasticity.

Aim: To investigate the relative effect of prefabricated thermoplastic posterior leaf spring AFO (PLS-AFO) on balance and fall risk.

Homocysteine levels in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

Objectives: Increased homocysteine (HCY) levels are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Plasma HCY is increased in chronic heart failure (CHF) patients, and previous studies suggest that hyperhomocysteinemia causes adverse cardiac remodeling and affects pump function. We aimed to evaluate the HCY levels in patients with diastolic heart failure with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF).

Prenatal diagnosis of hemoglobinopathies in Hacettepe University, Turkey.

Between 1983 and 2008, prenatal diagnostic procedures for identifying hemoglobinopathies were performed in 947 at-risk fetuses. Seventy-six percent of the fetuses were at risk for β-thalassemia major and 16% for sickle cell anemia; only a small percentage (7%) were at risk for compound heterozygosity of β-thalassemia and an abnormal hemoglobin of the β chain. The results of the study showed that β gene mutations in hemoglobinopathies have a very broad spectrum.

Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis and bronchial asthma: a case report.

Objective: Strongyloides stercoralis is a soil-transmitted intestinal nematode that has been estimated to infect at least 60 million people, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. Strongyloides infection has been described in immunosupressed patients with lymphoma, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus etc. Our case who has rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and bronchial asthma was treated with low dose steroids and methotrexate.

The treatment of acute liver failure with fractionated plasma separation and adsorption system: Experience in 85 applications.

Description of the registry of patients with ankylosing spondylitis in Turkey: TRASD-IP.

A web-based application patient follow-up program was developed to create a registry of patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) by the Turkiye Romatizma Arastirma Savas Dernegi (TRASD) AS Study Group. This study describes the methodological background and patient characteristics. The patient follow-up program is a web-based questionnaire, which contains sections on socio-demographic data, anamnesis, personal and family history, systemic and musculoskeletal examination, laboratory and imaging data and treatment.

Diversity of Y-short tandem repeats in the representative sample of the population of Canton Sarajevo residents, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In our previous population study, we have used twelve Y-chromosomal short tandem repeats loci incorporated in the PowerPlex Y System to determine Y-STR diversity in B&H human population. With intent to obtain additional verification of the previously obtained results as well as to establish specific reference for a local B&H population, we have decided to test DNA samples collected from 100 unrelated healthy male Canton Sarajevo residents (from Sarajevo region) for the same twelve Y-linked short tandem repeats loci. Qiagen DNeasy Tissue Kit (Qiagen, GmbH, Hilden, Germany) was used for DNA extraction from buccal swabs and PowerPlex Y System (Promega Corp.

Enhancing cytotoxic and apoptotic effect in OVCAR-3 and MDAH-2774 cells with all-trans retinoic acid and zoledronic acid: a paradigm of synergistic molecular targeting treatment for ovarian cancer.

Background: Ovarian cancer is the most fatal gynecologic malignancies in the world. Although, platinum based treatments are widely used, the disease becomes treatment refractory within two years, and novel treatment options should be searched. All- trans retinoic acid (ATRA) induces growth arrest, differentiation and cell death in some types of cancer cells and its combination with various anticancer agents results in enhanced cytotoxicity.

Healing of two and three wall intrabony periodontal defects following treatment with an enamel matrix derivative combined with autogenous bone.

Background: There are still limited data on the outcomes of regenerative periodontal surgery using a combination of an enamel matrix protein derivative (EMD) and autogenous bone (AB).

Aim: To evaluate the healing of deep intrabony defects treated with either a combination EMD+AB or EMD alone.

Materials And Methods: Forty patients with advanced chronic periodontitis, with one deep intrabony defect, were randomly treated with either EMD+AB (test) or EMD (control).

Comparison of different antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods for Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and results of synergy testing.

Accurate determination of resistance is important to ensure appropriate antimicrobial therapy in Stenotrophomonas maltophilia infections. This study was undertaken to evaluate the susceptibility results obtained by disc diffusion, E-test, Phoenix system, and reference agar dilution method and also to evaluate the in vitro activity of various antimicrobial combinations against multidrug-resistant S. maltophilia.
