Surgical treatment of the neglected achilles tendon rupture with Hyalonect.

Background: The purpose of this study was to report the management and outcomes of ten patients with chronic Achilles tendon rupture treated with a turndown gastrocnemius-soleus fascial flap wrapped with a surgical mesh (Hyalonect).

Methods: Ten men with neglected Achilles tendon rupture were treated with a centrally based turndown gastrocnemius fascial flap wrapped with Hyalonect. Hyalonect is a knitted mesh composed of HYAFF, a benzyl ester of hyaluronic acid.

Effect of internal carotid artery stenting on superior thyroid artery Doppler flow.

Objectives: Patients with carotid disease are frequently referred for carotid artery stenting based on the results of carotid duplex studies. During carotid artery stenting, the stent is usually extended into the common carotid artery, thereby crossing the external carotid artery. Previous studies have shown conflicting results regarding internal carotid stenting and external carotid artery flow velocities, but the effect of stenting on ipsilateral superior thyroid artery velocities has not been defined.

Clinical and laboratory findings in mad honey poisoning: a single center experience.

Effect of acetate to biomass ratio on simultaneous polyhydroxybutyrate generation and direct microbial growth in fast growing microbial culture.

The study investigated the effect of variations in the acetate to biomass ratio on substrate storage potential, and the kinetics of substrate utilization. A series of batch experiments were conducted with biomass taken from the fill and draw reactor operated at a sludge age of 2 d. One of the batch reactors duplicated the substrate loading in the main reactor.

Background: Intrauterine perfusion insufficiency induced by transient maternal hypotension has been reported to be associated with foetal brain malformations. However, the effects of maternal hypotension on apoptotic processes in the foetal brain have not been investigated experimentally during the intrauterine period.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the plasma thrombin-tat fibrinolysis inhibitor antigen (TAFIag) levels in women with recurrent miscarriage (RM) and age-matched healthy parous women as controls.

Materials And Methods: A total of 80 patients were enrolled in this study. As a study group (group 1), the authors evaluated 49 RM patients who had two or more consecutive abortions with unknown etiology before 12 weeks of gestation.

A new method to determine reflex latency induced by high rate stimulation of the nervous system.

High rate stimulations of the neuromuscular system, such as continuous whole body vibration, tonic vibration reflex and high frequency electrical stimulation, are used in the physiological research with an increasing interest. In these studies, the neuronal circuitries underlying the reflex responses remain unclear due to the problem of determining the exact reflex latencies. We present a novel "cumulated average method" to determine the reflex latency during high rate stimulation of the nervous system which was proven to be significantly more accurate than the classical method.

Clinical characteristics of paediatric neuro-Behçet's disease: a single tertiary centre experience.

Objectives: To investigate the demographic and neurological features and treatment modalities of neuro-Behçet's disease (NBD) in children, to share our experiences and to summarise the literature.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of Behçet's disease (BD) patients who attended our paediatric rheumatology department between December 2005 and October 2013. Five patients had the diagnosis of NBD.

The objective of this study was to determine total phenolic and flavonoid contents, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of methanolic extracts from the leaves and barks of three Alnus species. The phenolic and flavonoid contents of extracts were determined spectrophotometrically using Folin-Ciocalteau and aluminium chloride methods, respectively. In addition, antioxidant activity of the extracts was determined using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging method.

Cytomegalovirus-related hemorrhagic cystitis in an immunocompetent child.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections are mostly seen in immunocompromised patients. However, unusual manifestations or complications of acquired CMV infections in immunocompetent patients are rarely reported. CMV-related hemorrhagic cystitis is extremely rare but should be considered even in immunocompetent patients.

A comparative analysis of the effectiveness of cytogenetic and molecular genetic methods in the detection of Down syndrome.

The goal of this study was to examine the effectiveness of 6 STR markers application (D21S1435, D21S11, D21S1270, D21S1411, D21S226 and IFNAR) in molecular genetic diagnostics of Down syndrome (DS) and to compare it with cytogenetic method. Testing was performed on 73 children, with the previously cytogenetically confirmed Down syndrome. DNA isolated from the buccal swab was used.

Evolutionary engineering of yeast.

Evolutionary engineering is an inverse metabolic engineering strategy which is based on increasing genetic diversity and screening large populations for desired phenotypes. This strategy is highly advantageous in certain situations over rational metabolic engineering approaches, since there is little or no requirement of detailed genetic background information for the trait of interest. Here, we describe the experimental methodology for selecting stress-resistant yeast strains via evolutionary engineering approach by either serial batch or chemostat cultivations.
