Article Synopsis
  • Uterine leiomyomas, although rare in adolescents, can present with symptoms like abnormal bleeding and pelvic pain, with smooth muscle tumors of unknown malignant potential (STUMP) being even rarer.
  • In a hospital case study, three 19-year-old patients presented with significant symptoms, leading to the identification of varying sizes of uterine myomas; one was diagnosed as a STUMP tumor while the others were benign fibroids.
  • Despite their rarity, it is important for healthcare providers to consider uterine myomas and STUMP tumors as potential diagnoses in young patients experiencing pelvic symptoms.

Background This study hypothesizes that patients with femoral condylar hypoplasia who undergo total knee arthroplasty (TKA) may experience femoral component malrotation and that the surgeon performing the operation may not notice it. The aim is to measure the rotational alignment of the femoral components and assess the functional outcomes in these patients. Materials and methods Between December 2018 and December 2022, a total of 96 knees from 80 patients were evaluated.

Context: Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) have recently emerged in assessing pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs). However, their combined use with PASS scale has not yet been explored.

Objective: Our goal was to investigate the prognostic values of NLR and PLR and incorporate the PASS score into our analysis.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate the clinical findings of our cochlear implant (CI) patients with otitis media with effusion (OME) and CI patients treated with ventilation tube (VT) for OME.

Methods: The medical records of patients who underwent CI surgery at Hacettepe University, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, between November 1997 and March 2023 were reviewed. Patients who had OME or VT in the implanted ear at the time of surgery were included in the study.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of Kinesio Taping (KT) application on the single-leg counter-movement jump (CMJ) and surface electromyographic (sEMG) activity in trained female athletes, in both resting and fatigued states. In this single-blind, randomized, sham-controlled trial, twenty-four healthy trained female athletes were randomly assigned to either the KT (n=12) or the sham tape group (n=12). KT was applied using an inhibition technique on rectus femoris, vastus medialis, biceps femoris, and lateral gastrocnemius muscles of the dominant leg.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between residual right-to-left shunt (RLS) after percutaneous patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure and specific PFO structural features identified via transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE).
  • Out of 123 patients screened for PFO closure due to cryptogenic stroke, 103 were successfully treated, with 21% showing significant residual RLS within an 18-month follow-up period.
  • The research finds that certain anatomical characteristics, like aortic rim and IVC-PFO tunnel angle, are significantly associated with the presence of residual RLS, suggesting the IVC-PFO tunnel angle as a useful indicator for predicting RLS after PFO closure.

Myeloid blast-phase chronic myeloid leukemia (MBP-CML) is a rare disease with a dismal prognosis. It is twice as common as lymphoid blast-phase CML, and its prognosis is poorer. Despite the success with tyrosine kinase inhibitors in the treatment of chronic-phase CML, the same does not hold true for MBP-CML.

Objective: This study aims to present the surgical and oncological long-term outcomes of patients with locally recurrent nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) following endoscopic endonasal nasopharyngectomy (EEN).

Methods: The medical records of 11 patients who underwent EEN due to recurrent NPC were retrospectively reviewed.

Results: The mean age of the patient cohort, consisting of 10 males (90.

Fibromyalgia (FM) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients contributes to increased fatigue, anxiety, depression, and mental exhaustion. This study's objective is to systematically review the literature and to determine the frequency of FM in patients with SLE and its associated factors. A literature review was conducted to assess the prevalence of FM in SLE patients and to identify FM-associated factors.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study aims to compare the hematological manifestations between early-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (erSLE) patients (aged ≤50) and late-onset patients (ltSLE) (aged >50) through a meta-analysis of previous research.
  • - Results from 39 studies involving over 19,000 patients show that erSLE patients exhibit higher frequencies of autoimmune hemolytic anemia, lymphopenia, leukopenia, and lymphadenopathy compared to ltSLE patients, while the rates of thrombosis and thrombocytopenia were similar in both groups.
  • - The findings suggest that it may be challenging to link certain hematological issues to SLE in older patients due to other

Objective: Immune-related gene expression levels in the tumor microenvironment (TM) of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients was compared.

Materials And Methods: The CD163, CD274, CD86, FUT4, FOXP3, and ITGAX levels of HNSCC patients in their tumor tissues (n =76) and surrounding tissues adjacent to the tumor (n =76) were determined using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Changes in these genes were also evaluated by associating with demographical data of the patients.

On October 29, 2021, FDA granted accelerated approval to asciminib (SCEMBLIX; Novartis), a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI), for the treatment of adult patients with Philadelphia chromosome positive chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+ CML) in chronic phase (CP), previously treated with two or more TKIs, and granted traditional approval to asciminib for adult patients with Ph+ CML in CP with the T315I mutation. The first indication was approved based on major molecular response (MMR) at 24 weeks in the ASCEMBL study, a randomized trial comparing asciminib with bosutinib in patients who had failed two or more TKIs. This indication was ultimately granted traditional approval on October 12, 2022, based on safety data and MMR rate at 96 weeks of 38% [95% confidence interval (CI), 30-46] in the asciminib arm versus 16% (95% CI, 8-26) in the bosutinib arm (P value: 0.

Preventing the development and recurrence of periodontal diseases often includes antimicrobial mouthrinses to control the growth of the periodontal pathogens. Most antimicrobials are nonselective, targeting the symbiotic oral species as well as the dysbiosis-inducing ones. This affects the overall microbial composition and metabolic activity and consequently the host-microbe interactions, which can be detrimental (associated with inflammation) or beneficial (health-associated).

Thrombocytopenia can be one of the first manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus and occurs in up to 40% of patients. Additionally, approximately 2% of patients with primary immune thrombocytopenia may develop systemic lupus erythematosus. Systemic lupus erythematosus is a highly heterogeneous disease, and in some patients, it may present mainly with hematological findings.
