Formulation of Fiber-Enriched Crackers with Oleaster Powder: Effect on Functional, Textural, and Sensory Attributes.

The objective of this study was to produce fiber-enriched crackers by substitution of corn flour and whole wheat flour with oleaster powder (OP) at levels of 0% (C-0), 10% (C-10), 20% (C-20), 30% (C-30), and 50% (C-50) and to determine their sensory, textural, color, and bioactive properties, as well as revealing their dietary fiber and glycemic index values. The results showed that the L* values of the samples were found to range from 62.39 (C-30) to 67.

Role of intravenous vitamin C on outcomes in hospitalized patients with moderate or severe COVID-19: a real life data of Turkish patients.

Background: We aimed to examine the efficacy of intravenous vitamin C (IV-VC) in the treatment of hospitalized patients with moderate or severe COVID-19.

Method: We conducted a single-center and retrospective study including patients with COVID-19 diagnosis who were hospitalized. Patients were categorized into three groups as those who received low-dose (LDVC group, 2 g/day, n = 183) or high-dose IV-VC (HDVC group, 25 g/day, n = 41) and who did not receive IV-VC (control group, n = 46).

European multicentre study evaluating the prognosis of peripheral early-stage lung adenocarcinoma patients operated on by segmentectomy or lobectomy.

Objectives: To analyse impact of segmentectomy on oncological outcomes of different peripheral early-stage lung adenocarcinoma patterns.

Methods: Retrospective multicentre study including patients who underwent either lobectomy or segmentectomy in 6 European centres from 2015 to 2021, for ≤2 cm pathological peripheral lung adenocarcinoma. Overall and disease-free survivals were assessed by cox-regression and lung cancer-specific survival by competing regression analyses to adjust for patient- and tumour-related factors both in the entire dataset and the in aggressive adenocarcinoma patterns dataset.

Results of surgical treatment of pulmonary artery sarcomas: Does histology affect survival?

Background: In this study, we aimed to describe our experience with primary pulmonary artery sarcoma in patients who underwent pulmonary endarterectomy and to evaluate clinical features, treatment, outcomes, and survival rates according to the histological subtypes of this malignant disease.

As our tertiary-level trauma center is close to an industrial zone and associated international port, industrial injuries are seen more often than is expected in routine practice. The aim of this study was to present the demographic data, treatment options, and changes in work-life of patients with foot and ankle injuries due to a forklift accident, and to determine the factors affecting the clinical outcome. The study was conducted in our university hospital and included patients who presented with a foot and ankle injury resulting from a forklift accident.

Improving quality of life through the routine use of the patient concerns inventory for head and neck cancer patients: baseline results in a cluster preference randomised controlled trial.

Purpose: The main aim of this paper is to present baseline demographic and clinical characteristics and HRQOL in the two groups of the Patient Concerns Inventory (PCI) trial. The baseline PCI data will also be described.

Methods: This is a pragmatic cluster preference randomised control trial with 15 consultant clusters from two sites either 'using' (n = 8) or 'not using' (n = 7) the PCI at a clinic for all of their trial patients.

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in developed countries. The use of tobacco products and unhealthy diet are prominent habits that increase the risk of CVD.

Macroscopic complete resection is not associated with improved survival in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma.

Objective: Macroscopic complete resection (MCR) is the recommended surgical strategy in malignant pleural mesothelioma. Our objective was to analyze whether MCR influences survival in malignant pleural mesothelioma.

Methods: Between 2002 and 2016, 154 patients underwent pleurectomy decortication (n = 90), extrapleural pneumonectomy (n = 42), or exploratory/diagnostic procedures (n = 22) in a single institution.

Evaluating the effect of smoking cessation treatment on a complex dynamical system.

Objective: To understand the dynamic relations among tobacco withdrawal symptoms to inform the development of effective smoking cessation treatments. Dynamical system models from control engineering are introduced and utilized to evaluate complex treatment effects. We demonstrate how dynamical models can be used to examine how distinct withdrawal-related processes are related over time and how treatment influences these relations.

Effect of the degree of head elevation on the incidence and severity of venous air embolism in cranial neurosurgical procedures with patients in the semisitting position.

OBJECTIVE The semisitting position of a patient confers numerous advantages in various neurosurgical procedures, but venous air embolism is one of the associated complications of this position. To date, no prospective studies of the relationship between the degree of head elevation and the rate and severity of venous air embolism for patients undergoing a procedure in this position have been performed. In this study, the authors compared changes in the severity of venous air embolism according to the degree of head elevation (30° or 45°) in patients undergoing an elective cranial neurosurgical procedure in the semisitting position.

Transoral laser microsurgery for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma: A paradigm shift in therapeutic approach.

Background: The contemporary treatment of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an area of debate. We report outcomes of a minimally invasive approach involving transoral laser microsurgery (TLM).

Methods: A consecutive series of patients (n = 153) undergoing primary TLM for oropharyngeal SCC from 2006 to 2013 was studied.

Effect of the amount of intraoperative fluid administration on postoperative pulmonary complications following anatomic lung resections.

Objective: Excessive fluid administration during lung resections is a risk for pulmonary injury. We analyzed the effect of intraoperative fluids on postoperative pulmonary complications (PCs).

Methods: Patients who underwent anatomic pulmonary resections during 2012 to 2013 were included.

Designing adaptive intensive interventions using methods from engineering.

Objective: Adaptive intensive interventions are introduced, and new methods from the field of control engineering for use in their design are illustrated.

Method: A detailed step-by-step explanation of how control engineering methods can be used with intensive longitudinal data to design an adaptive intensive intervention is provided. The methods are evaluated via simulation.

Pulmonary endarterectomy for chronic thrombo-embolic pulmonary hypertension: an institutional experience.

Objective: Pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) is the treatment of choice for patients with chronic thrombo-embolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). The aim of this study was to review our initial experience since the implementation of our program.

Methods: Data were collected prospectively on all patients who underwent PEA between March 2011 and March 2012.

Oral complaints of denture-wearing elderly people living in two nursing homes in Istanbul, Turkey.

Aim: The aim of this study was to observe and determine oral complaints of people aged 55 years or older, living in two nursing homes in Istanbul, Turkey, and their satisfaction with their complete or partial dentures by means of a simple questionnaire.

Methods: Two old people's homes (one public and one private) in the district of Uskudar in Istanbul agreed to take part in this study. All residents who were available were invited to answer a piloted nine-point questionnaire with questions on age, gender, physical problems, eating, and communication, aesthetic denture wearing and psychological problems.

Caries experience and oral hygiene status of a group of visually impaired children in Istanbul, Turkey.

Purpose: To evaluate the caries experience, oral hygiene status and oral health knowledge of a group of visually impaired students.

Materials And Methods: The study was conducted at one of the largest visually impaired children's schools among students aged between 7 and 16 years (n = 178) in Istanbul, Turkey. A 16-item questionnaire was asked in addition to a clinical tooth examination.

Management of the neck and regional recurrence in squamous cell carcinoma of the maxillary alveolus and hard palate compared with other sites in the oral cavity.

Background: The aim of this article was to assess the management of the neck and regional recurrence for squamous cell carcinoma of the maxillary alveolus and hard palate (n = 43) and compare that to the rest of the oral cancer sites (n = 465).

Methods: This is a retrospective report through database and case note review.

Results: The incidence of nodal metastases (pathologic node-positive necks added to regional recurrence for clinical N0 and pathologic N0) was 37% (16/43) for maxillary alveolus and hard palate compared with 40% (187/465) for the oral cavity in general.

Postoperative psychiatric disorders in general thoracic surgery: incidence, risk factors and outcomes.

Objective: Postoperative psychiatric disorders (PPDs) may complicate the post-surgical outcome. We analysed the types, incidences, risk factors and outcomes of the PPDs in non-cardiac thoracic surgery patients.

Methods: All patients (n=100) undergoing major non-cardiac thoracic surgery from January 2004 to March 2005 were investigated prospectively.

Risk of cataract after exposure to low doses of ionizing radiation: a 20-year prospective cohort study among US radiologic technologists.

The study aim was to determine the risk of cataract among radiologic technologists with respect to occupational and nonoccupational exposures to ionizing radiation and to personal characteristics. A prospective cohort of 35,705 cataract-free US radiologic technologists aged 24-44 years was followed for nearly 20 years (1983-2004) by using two follow-up questionnaires. During the study period, 2,382 cataracts and 647 cataract extractions were reported.

Proximity to crops and residential exposure to agricultural herbicides in iowa.

Rural residents can be exposed to agricultural pesticides through the proximity of their homes to crop fields. Previously, we developed a method to create historical crop maps using a geographic information system. The aim of the present study was to determine whether crop maps are useful for predicting levels of crop herbicides in carpet dust samples from residences.

Use of Palacos R-40 with gentamicin to reconstruct temporal defects after maxillofacial reconstructions with temporalis flaps.

The temporalis muscle flap is a useful flap for the reconstruction of oral ablative defects. A complication of its use that was overlooked was the crater-like defect created when the muscle is stripped from its attachment on the temporal fossa. The cold-cure acrylic we use is Palacos R-40 with Gentamicin (Heraeus Kulzer GmbH).

Factors associated with postoperative delirium after thoracic surgery.

Background: Postoperative delirium is an acute confusional state characterized by fluctuating consciousness and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. We analyzed the incidence and risk factors of delirium following thoracic surgery.

Methods: All patients (n = 432) who underwent thoracotomy or sternotomy from 1996 to 2003 were analyzed retrospectively.

NMR study on the hydroxy protons of the Lewis X and Lewis Y oligosaccharides.

The 1H NMR chemical shifts and NOEs of hydroxy protons in Lewis X trisaccharide, beta-D-Galp-(1-->4)[alpha-L-Fucp-(1-->3)]-beta-D-GlcpNAc, and Lewis Y tetrasaccharide, alpha-L-Fucp-(1-->2)-beta-D-Galp-(1-->4)[alpha-L-Fucp-(1-->3)]-beta-D-GlcpNAc, were obtained for 85% H2O/15% (CD3)2CO solutions. The OH-4 signal of Galp in Lewis X and OH-3, OH-4 signals of Galp, and OH-2 signal of Fucp linked to Galp in Lewis Y had chemical shifts which indicate reduced hydration due to their proximity to the hydrophobic face of the Fucp unit linked to GlcpNAc. The inter-residue NOEs involving the exchangeable NH and OH protons confirmed the stacking interaction between the Fucp linked to the GlcpNAc and the Galp residues in Lewis X and Lewis Y.
