Background: Our aim is to identify the relation of leptin, adiponectin and insulin resistance to bone mineral density (BMD) in type 2 diabetic postmenopausal women and compare it with that experienced by nondiabetics.
Material And Methods: Seventy six postmenopausal female patients were included in the study. Postmenopausal type 2 diabetic (n = 19) and nondiabetic patients (n = 19) with spine and/or hip BMD T score lower than -2 were included in the study, and postmenopausal type 2 diabetic (n = 20) and nondiabetic women (n = 18) with normal BMD (T score > -1) were selected as control groups.
Aims: There is limited data on alterations in novel right ventricular (RV) function indices like tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) and tricuspid annular systolic velocity (TASV) after transcatheter atrial septal defect (ASD) closure. We aimed to evaluate RV function by echocardiography (ECG) with these novel indices in early period in patients with secundum-type ASD that was closed percutaneously.
Methods: Patients were enrolled to study if they had secundum-type ASD that was suitable for percutaneous closure.
Objective: The assessment of subclinical atherosclerosis is important in the evaluation of a hypertensive patient, as it provides information on the severity of the hypertension and the cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study was to determine the usefulness of the aortic knob width measured on chest radiography in the assessment of subclinical atherosclerosis in hypertensive patients.
Method And Results: A total of 126 consecutive hypertensive patients were enrolled.
Objectives: Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHP) is associated with a variety of cardiovascular disturbances such as left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy, diastolic cardiac dysfunction, and hypertension. LV asynchrony is defined as the loss of the simultaneous peak contraction of corresponding cardiac segments. The objective of this study was to assess systolic asynchrony in patients with overt hyperparthyroidism.

We enrolled 2 groups of patients: 42 with cerebral palsy in group 1 and 56 patients with cerebral palsy and epilepsy in group 2. The subjects in group 2 were considered to have good epilepsy prognosis if they were free of seizures for the previous year; otherwise they were considered to have poor epilepsy prognosis.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the analgesic efficacy of sphenopalatine ganglion block performed under general anesthesia in patients undergoing functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) with operative blood loss and postoperative complications (headache, visual disturbances, nausea, vomiting, sore throat, swallow difficulty). Forty-five consenting patients were randomized to receive bilateral sphenopalatine ganglion block with saline (Group S, n = 15), bupivacaine 0.5% (Group B, n = 15), or levobupivacaine 0.

With distinctive imaging findings on dynamic computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), differentiation of these benign hepatic tumors from metastases can be made. We described imaging findings of these hepatic lesions in a 57-year-old man who presented with rectal adenocarcinoma for staging.

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is the most versatile of several incontinence types and is distinguished by physical degeneration of the continence-providing mechanism.

Due to the lethality of these toxins, there are elevated concerns regarding their possible use as bioterrorism agents. Moreover, their widespread use for cosmetic purposes, and as medical treatments, has increased the potential risk of accidental overdosing and environmental exposure.

Methods: Forty-three patients with intermittent claudication and leg pain, diagnosed as mild PAOD, had undergone DUS and MDCTA of lower limb. The arteries of lower leg were initially scanned by DUS, followed by MDCTA.
Tau is a multiply phosphorylated protein that is essential for the development and maintenance of the nervous system. Errors in Tau action are associated with Alzheimer disease and related dementias. A huge literature has led to the widely held notion that aberrant Tau hyperphosphorylation is central to these disorders.

Lp-PLA2 appears, however, to be relatively unique in its high specificity for vascular inflammation as opposed to systemic inflammation, its low biologic variability, and its direct role in the causal pathway of plaque inflammation. Nevertheless, the relation between LP-PLA2 and isolated coronary artery ectasia (CAE) has not been investigated yet.

The aim of this study was to investigate vascular structural and functional changes in patients with AS, with special emphasis on the effects of different treatment modalities, through evaluation of level of vascular stiffness (pulse wave velocity [PVW]) and carotid intima media thickness (IMT-C).
Methods: A total of 67 AS patients, and age, sex, body mass index (BMI) smoking status, lipid profiles and blood pressure-matched healthy control subjects (n=34) were studied.

In this study the authors retrospectively evaluated the results of the operated intracranial high grade gliomas using low field intraoperative MRI system Polestar N 20+Stealth Station (Medtronic, Co, USA) at German Hospital, Istanbul. Between November 2006 and October 2008, 11 patients underwent microsurgical tumor resection with the use of intraoperative MRI for WHO Grade III and IV gliomas. There were six males and five females, mean age was 53 (range 30-73), and mean follow-up duration was 19 months (range 4-31).

The aim of our study was to examine the effect of β-glucan on lung injury induced by abdominal aortic IR in rats.
Material And Methods: Thirty-two Wistar-albino rats were randomized into four groups (eight per group) as follows: the control group (sham laparotomy), aortic IR (120 min ischemia and 120 min reperfusion), aortic IR + β-glucan (β-glucan 50 mg/kg/d for 10 d was administered orally before IR), and control + β-glucan.
Background: In this study we investigate the effects of adrenomedullin on myocardial injury after ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) after abdominal aortic surgery.
Methods: Thirty-two Wistar rats were randomized into 4 groups (n = 8) as follows: control group (sham laparotomy), the aortic I/R group, aortic I/R plus adrenomedullin group (underwent aortic I/R periods, and received a bolus intravenous injection of .05 μg/kg/min adrenomedullin), and the control plus adrenomedullin group.

Objective: To examine the relationship between degenerative aortic valve disease and osteoarthritis Background: Degenerative aortic valve disease (DAVD) and osteoarthritis (OA) are age-related degenerative diseases whose pathogenesis involves mechanical stress and local inflammation.
Methods: Forty-four patients with DAVD (Group 1) and 21 controls (Group 2) were included in this study, which was intended to investigate the similarity between the two conditions. The two groups were similar in terms of age, sex, body mass index, a history of hypertension, cholesterol levels, diabetes mellitus and cigarette consumption.
Purpose: Cerebral vasospasm is the common cause of poor outcome after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Although many agents are experimentally and clinicaly used to protect or recover from vasospasm, an effective neurotherapeutic drug is still missing. Erythropoietin (EPO) is recently a promising candidate.

Hypertension and left ventricle hypertrophy (LVH) are related in terms of pathogenesis and their effects on renal progression. In this study, we aimed to compare the effects of losartan and ramipril on blood pressure (BP) control, LVH, and renal progression in patients with hypertensive ADPKD.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe regulation of microtubule growing and shortening dynamics is essential for proper cell function and viability, and microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs) such as the neural protein tau are critical regulators of these dynamic processes. Further, we and our colleagues have proposed that misregulation of microtubule dynamics may contribute to tau-mediated neuronal cell death and dementia in Alzheimer's and related diseases. In the first part of this chapter, we present a general background on microtubule dynamics and then focus in on tau.
