Central line-associated bloodstream infections in the intensive care unit: importance of the care bundle.

Background: The importance and efficacy of a care bundle for preventing central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) and infectious complications related to placing a central venous catheter (CVC) in patients in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Methods: A care bundle was implemented from July 2013 to June 2014 in a medical ICU and surgical ICU. Data were divided into three periods: the prior period (July 2012-June 2013), the intervention period (July 2013-June 2014; first and second periods), and the post-intervention period (July 2014-December 2014; third period).

Effect of 3 cements on white spot lesion formation after full-coverage rapid maxillary expander: A comparative in-vivo study.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to assess the effects of 3 luting agents (glass ionomer cement, compomer, and polycarboxylate cement) on white spot lesion formation in patients with full-coverage bonded acrylic splint expanders. White spot lesion formation was assessed with quantitative light-induced fluorescence.

Methods: Full-coverage rapid maxillary expanders were cemented with glass ionomer cement, compomer, and polycarboxylate cement in groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively.

Risk factors for cut-out of double lag screw fixation in proximal femoral fractures.

Objective: We assessed factors associated with cut-out after internal fixation of proximal femoral fractures using double lag screw nails.

Design: Retrospective cohort study.

In this study, a series of novel silicon (IV) phthalocyanines conjugated axially with anti-inflammatory (sulindac) and triethylene glycol groups has been synthesized. Different synthetic strategies were attempted to obtain the targeted molecules in high yield. The compounds were fully characterized by using different analyses techniques.

The comparison of the efficiency of traditional lectures to video-supported lectures within the training of the Emergency Medicine residents.

Objectives: Recent developments in computer and video technology, multimedia resources enter quickest way possible into medical education and have started to gain popularity. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of video-supported lectures on leaning, with comparison to traditional lectures.

Methods: According to lecture techniques, two separate groups; one is the traditional lectures group (TLG) and the other is video-supported lectures group (VSLG), are formed.

An overview of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation related thrombotic complications.

Thrombotic episodes are far less common than bleeding complications after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). However, they lead to significant morbidity and mortality. These complications are classified into four groups, including venous thromboembolic events (VTE), catheter-induced thrombosis (CIT), transplant-associated thrombotic microangiopathy (TA-TMA) and sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) or veno-occlusive disease (VOD).

Quality of life and related factors among chronic hepatitis B-infected patients: a multi-center study, Turkey.

Background: The aim of this study was to assess health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients in Turkey and to study related factors.

Methods: This multicenter study was carried out between January 01 and April 15, 2015 in Turkey in 57 centers. Adults were enrolled and studied in three groups.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate histologically the following treatment of bilateral localized gingival recessions with coronally advanced flap (CAF) combined with platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) or subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG).

Materials And Methods: Tissue samples were harvested from 14 subjects either 1 or 6 months after the surgeries. The 2-mm punch biopsies were obtained from the mid-portion of the grafted sites.

A case of acute respiratory failure in a rheumatoid arthritis patient after the administration of abatacept.

Drug-induced pulmonary disease is an important consideration in the differential diagnosis of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who present with respiratory symptoms. We report a patient with RA who developed acute respiratory failure two weeks after the administration of abatacept. The clinical findings were consistent with drug-induced acute respiratory failure, most likely acute eosinophilic pneumonia.

Peptide-substituted phthalocyanine photosensitizers: design, synthesis, photophysicochemical and photobiological studies.

A series of phthalocyanine-peptide-quencher conjugates (6-9) were synthesized as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy in cancer treatment. The photophysical, photochemical and photobiological properties of these activatable molecular beacons were also investigated in this study. For this purpose, the fluorescence, singlet oxygen and photodegradation quantum yields and fluorescence lifetime values of the compounds were determined in DMSO solutions.

Comparison of Surgical Success for Infantile Esotropia and Strabismus Associated with Neurological Impairment.

Purpose: Surgery for strabismus associated with neurological impairment is assumed to have unsatisfactory results in comparison with other strabismus cases. The aim of this study is to compare the surgical success rates of infantile esotropia (IE) and strabismus associated with neurological impairment.

Methods: The records of 103 patients that received operations for IE and strabismus associated with neurological impairment between January 1994 and May 2014 were reviewed retrospectively.

A histopathological investigation of Tenon's capsule in diabetic eyes.

The aim of this study is to investigate the histopathological features of Tenon's capsule in eyes with diabetic macular oedema and to compare them between diabetic eyes and healthy subjects. The study included 26 eyes with diabetic oedema and 17 healthy eyes as healthy controls. Tenon's capsule biopsy specimens were processed with the routine electron microscopic analysis technique.

Gingival Crevicular Fluid and Plasma Levels of Transglutaminase-2 and Oxidative Stress Markers in Cyclosporin A-Induced Gingival Overgrowth.

Background: Transglutaminase (TGM)-2 has been shown to contribute to fibrosis by extracellular matrix accumulation in some organs and is activated by intracellular reactive oxygen species. The aim of this study is to investigate levels of gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and plasma TGM-2 and oxidative stress markers (OSMs) in cyclosporin A (CsA)-induced gingival overgrowth (GO).

Methods: The study enrolled 20 healthy (H) individuals; 20 patients with gingivitis (G); 20 CsA-medicated patients with GO (CsA GO+); and 20 CsA-medicated patients without GO (CsA GO-).

An overview of infectious complications after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Infections are the most common and significant cause of mortality and morbidity after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). The presence of neutropenia and mucosal damage are the leading risk factors in the early pre-engraftment phase. In the early post-engraftment phase, graft versus host disease (GvHD) induced infection risk is increased in addition to catheter related infections.

Monocyte chemotactic protein-1, RANTES and macrophage migration inhibitory factor levels in gingival crevicular fluid of metabolic syndrome patients with gingivitis.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to determine gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) levels of monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), regulated on activation, normal T-cell expressed and secreted protein (RANTES) and macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) in metabolic syndrome patients with gingivitis.

Design: Twenty metabolic syndrome patients with gingivitis (MSG), 20 MetS patients with clinically healthy periodontium (MSH), 20 systemically healthy subjects with gingivitis and 20 subjects who were both systemically and periodontally healthy were included. Periodontal and systemical parameters were recorded.

Effects of ATP-sensitive potassium channel blockers on vascular hyporeactivity, mesenteric blood flow, and survival in lipopolysaccharide-induced septic shock model.

In this study, the possible therapeutic effects of various ATP-sensitive potassium channel (KATP) blockers (glibenclamide, repaglinide, 5-HD, HMR-1098) have been tested in experimental septic shock model. Rats were given lipopolysaccharide (1 mg·kg(-1)) to create experimental shock model and 4 h later, under 400 mg·kg(-1) chloral hydrate anesthesia, parameters such as blood pressure, mesenteric blood flow, the response of mesenteric circulation to phenylephrine (vasoconstrictor stimulation), and organ and oxidative damage were analyzed. Also 75 mg·kg(-1) lethal dose of lipopolysaccharide was given to mice and effects of KATP blockers on survival have been tested.

Evaluation of gingival crevicular fluid cyclophilin a and extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer levels in different periodontal diseases.

Objective: Cyclophilin A (CypA) is able to regulate inflammatory responses and matrix metalloproteinase production via its interaction with extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN). EMMPRIN is the cell surface receptor of CypA. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) CypA and EMMPRIN levels in patients with chronic periodontitis (CP), generalized aggressive periodontitis (G-AgP) and periodontally healthy controls.

Objectives: hCAP18/LL-37 is an endogenous antibiotic having a role in innate immunity. The aim of the present study was to evaluate serum and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) hCAP18/LL-37 levels in patients with generalized aggressive periodontitis (G-AgP).

Materials And Methods: Twenty-six G-AgP patients, 24 gingivitis patients, and 25 healthy subjects were included in this study.

Allogeneic Transplantation in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia and the Effect of Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors on Survival: A Quasi-Experimental Study.

Objective: Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have changed the indications for allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the effect of TKIs on allo-HSCT in CML.

Materials And Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, we compared patient, disease, and transplantation characteristics as well as allo-HSCT outcomes between the pre-TKI era (before 2002) and the post-TKI era (2002 and later) in patients with CML.

A rare complication after allogeneic stem cell transplantation: post-transplant erythrocytosis.

Post-transplant erythrocytosis is an infrequent complication and has been reported after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) in aplastic anemia, acute myeloid leukemia, and chronic myeloid leukemia. The pre-disposing factors and treatment are not clearly defined. We present 11 post-transplant erythrocytosis cases.

Septoplasty in children.

Objectives: Physicians have long had concerns about the potential harmful effects of pediatric septoplasties on the nasoseptal growth process because septal cartilage is important for the growth and development of the face.

Methods: In this review article, pediatric septoplasty and its indications are discussed, together with a literature survey. In addition, overviews of development of the nasal skeleton from neonate to adult, nasal growth, and cartilaginous septum are presented.
