We measure the energy emitted by extensive air showers in the form of radio emission in the frequency range from 30 to 80 MHz. Exploiting the accurate energy scale of the Pierre Auger Observatory, we obtain a radiation energy of 15.8±0.

Thermal crush burn injury due to roller type ironing press machine is relatively rare and can cause destructive effects with significant morbidity. These injuries can be avoided by taking some basic precautions. Early debridement after admission and definitive treatment after the extent of injury are delineated and these are the preferred approaches in the management.

Neuronal autoantibodies in patients with Rasmussen's encephalitis.

Rasmussen's encephalitis (RE) is a rare disease with unknown pathophysiology. To disclose whether anti-neuronal autoimmunity participates in the aetiology of RE, various neuronal autoantibodies (NAAbs) were investigated in sera of patients with RE and controls. The study included five patients who fulfilled the RE diagnostic criteria (clinical, EEG, and MRI findings) as the patient group, and 50 multiple sclerosis patients and 50 healthy subjects as the control groups.

Everolimus is a mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitor that has been recently approved for the treatment of patients with advanced progressive pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor. Here, we present a case in which an early therapy response to everolimus was effectively demonstrated by Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT.

Fibrin clot prevents bone tunnel enlargement after ACL reconstruction with allograft.

Purpose: Bone tunnel enlargement is a feared complication after ACL reconstruction. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether adding a fibrin clot to the allograft for anatomic single-bundle ACL reconstruction would reduce tunnel widening.

Methods: Fifty patients who underwent anatomic single-bundle ACL reconstruction were included.

Ingestion is a highly regulated behavior that integrates taste and hunger cues to balance food intake with metabolic needs. To study the dynamics of ingestion in the vinegar fly Drosophila melanogaster, we developed Expresso, an automated feeding assay that measures individual meal-bouts with high temporal resolution at nanoliter scale. Flies showed discrete, temporally precise ingestion that was regulated by hunger state and sucrose concentration.

Penile degloving and dorsal dartos flap rotation approach for the management of isolated penile torsion.

Objective: Penile torsion is a counterclockwise rotational anomaly of the penile shaft or glans. We aimed to evaluate the outcomes of penile degloving and dorsal dartos flap rotation used for the repair of isolated penil torsion.

Material And Methods: During evaluation of the patients admitted to our polyclinic for circumcision between January 2013-December 2014, 5 cases of isolated penile torsion were determined.

Evaluation of febrile neutropenic episodes in adult patients with solid tumors.

The clinical use of cytotoxic chemotherapeutic agents has increased survival in cancer patients. However, treatment-associated bone marrow suppression and neutropenia often render patients prone to life-threatening infections. The aim of this study was to evaluate episodes of febrile neutropenia (FN) in patients with solid tumors, and identify the microorganisms and the factors affecting mortality.

Predominant Tubular Interleukin-18 Expression in Polyomavirus-Associated Nephropathy.

Polyomavirus-associated nephropathy (PVAN) occurs in a significant percentage of renal transplant recipients, with BK virus reactivation as the main causative agent. PVAN leads to tubular damage and may result in allograft loss. In this study, we analyzed the antiviral immune response in PVAN.

Transcranial direct current stimulation improves seizure control in patients with Rasmussen encephalitis.

Rasmussen encephalitis is associated with severe seizures that are unresponsive to antiepileptic drugs, as well as immunosuppressants. Transcranial direct current stimulation (t-DCS) is a non-invasive and safe method tried mostly for focal epilepsies with different aetiologies. To date, there is only one published study with two case reports describing the effect of t-DCS in Rasmussen encephalitis.

Mutation in ATG5 reduces autophagy and leads to ataxia with developmental delay.

Autophagy is required for the homeostasis of cellular material and is proposed to be involved in many aspects of health. Defects in the autophagy pathway have been observed in neurodegenerative disorders; however, no genetically-inherited pathogenic mutations in any of the core autophagy-related (ATG) genes have been reported in human patients to date. We identified a homozygous missense mutation, changing a conserved amino acid, in ATG5 in two siblings with congenital ataxia, mental retardation, and developmental delay.

Simple method for adaptive filtering of motion artifacts in E-textile wearable ECG sensors.

In this paper, we have developed a simple method for adaptive out-filtering of the motion artifact from the electrocardiogram (ECG) obtained by using conductive textile electrodes. The textile electrodes were placed on the left and the right wrist to measure ECG through lead-1 configuration. The motion artifact was induced by simple hand movements.

Intragraft Blood Dendritic Cell Antigen-1-Positive Myeloid Dendritic Cells Increase during BK Polyomavirus-Associated Nephropathy.

Although both polyomavirus infection and T cell-mediated rejection (TCMR) are characterized by tubulointerstitial inflammation in the renal allograft, these conditions are treated with opposing therapeutic regimens. To gain more insight into the differences between antiviral and alloimmune responses, we performed a case-control study, in which we immunophenotyped the inflammatory infiltrates in renal biopsy specimens with BK polyomavirus-associated nephropathy (BKPyVAN) and specimens with TCMR. Compared with TCMR, BKPyVAN was diagnosed later after transplantation; therefore, BKPyVAN specimens showed more chronic damage than TCMR specimens showed.

An evaluation of microwave-assisted fusion and microwave-assisted acid digestion methods for determining elemental impurities in carbon nanostructures using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry.

It is common for as-prepared carbon nanotube (CNT) and graphene samples to contain remnants of the transition metals used to catalyze their growth; contamination may also leave other trace elemental impurities in the samples. Although a full quantification of impurities in as-prepared samples of carbon nanostructures is difficult, particularly when trace elements are intercalated or encapsulated within a protective layer of graphitic carbon, reliable information is essential for reasons such as quantifying the adulteration of physico-chemical properties of the materials and for evaluating environmental issues. Here, we introduce a microwave-based fusion method to degrade single- and double-walled CNTs and graphene nanoplatelets into a fusion flux thereby thoroughly leaching all metallic impurities.

Effects of Depression on Treatment Motivation in Male Alcohol Dependence.

Introduction: Treatment motivation in alcohol dependents is usually viewed as a strong predictor of seeking treatment and treatment success. The conditions affecting motivation in alcohol dependence, however, has not been clarified. In this study, it is aimed to determine the effects of depression on treatment motivation in male alcohol dependence.

Nevus sebaceus with basal cell carcinoma, poroma, and verruca vulgaris.

Nevus sebaceus (NS) is a congenital, benign, hamartomatous lesion and it is possible to see several benign or malignant tumors accompanying it. One of these is the poroma, which is very rare, and has only been reported twice before, in the English literature. In this paper, we presented two new cases of NS.

The prognostic significance of glomerular infiltrating leukocytes during acute renal allograft rejection.

Transplant glomerulitis, observed in T cell-mediated and antibody-mediated rejection, is histologically characterized by intracapillary mononuclear cell infiltration. However, the prognostic value of counting various glomerular inflammatory cells during rejection has not been elucidated, which is a key step for the introduction of novel biomarkers in the clinics. We immunophenotyped glomerulitis during episodes of acute rejection in order to investigate their predictive value for transplant outcomes.

The relationship between Willis-Ekbom disease and serum ferritin levels among children in Northwestern Turkey.

Objective: To examine the incidence of restless legs syndrome (RLS) among children with iron deficiency, or iron deficiency anemia, or both, and the relationship between RLS prevalence and serum ferritin levels.

Methods: This prospective, cross-sectional, case controlled study was carried out between January and June 2013, and included 98 iron deficiency and/or iron deficiency anemia, and 102 healthy children referred to the Neurology and Pediatric Departments of the Medical Faculty of Bezmialem Vakif University, Istanbul, Turkey. Both groups were evaluated according to the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group diagnostic criteria.

THE OPINIONS OF HOSPITALIZED PATIENTS ABOUT EXPOSED DISCRIMINATION BASED ON HOSPITALS OR HEALTH PERSONNEL.

Objective: The aim of this paper is to determine whether age discrimination exists for hospitalized patients.

Methods: This study was conducted on 298 hospitalized patients at the Mersin University Medical Faculty Hospital in Mersin, Turkey, in May 2012. The questionnaire consisted of 8 questions trying to determine patients' socio-demographic attitudes and consisted of 22 items prepared by the authors.

Targeted fluorescent probes for detection of oxidative stress in the mitochondria.

Mitochondrial oxidative stress has been implicated in aging, neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, stroke, ischemia/reperfusion injury, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cancer. Recently, we developed two new mitochondria-targeting fluorescent probes, MitoProbes I/II, which specifically localize in mitochondria and employed both in vivo and in vitro for detection of mitochondrial oxidative stress. Here, we report the design and synthesis of these agents, as well as their utility for real-time imaging of mitochondrial oxidative stress in cells.
