Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) offers a valuable research tool for the assessment of 3D spinal deformity in AIS, however the horizontal patient position imposed by conventional scanners removes the axial compressive loading on the spine. The objective of this study was to design, construct and test an MRI compatible compression device for research into the effect of axial loading on spinal deformity using supine MRI scans. The device was evaluated by performing unloaded and loaded supine MRI scans on a series of 10 AIS patients.

Scimitar syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly, characterized by partial or complete anomalous pulmonary venous drainage of the right or left lung into the inferior vena cava. The syndrome is commonly associated with hypoplasia of the right lung, pulmonary sequestration, persisting left superior vena cava, and dextroposition of the heart. The pathogenesis of the syndrome is unclear, but it seems to originate from a basic developmental disorder of the entire lung bud early in embryogenesis.

Background: In daily dermatological practice, many dermatologists do not include demodicosis in their differential diagnoses, or the diagnosis of demodicosis is frequently masked by other skin diseases such as papulopustular or erythematotelangiectatic rosacea, seborrhoeic dermatitis, perioral dermatitis and contact dermatitis. There are two methods for measurement of the density of Demodex folliculorum (Dd): standardized skin surface biopsy (SSSB) and direct microscopic examination of fresh secretions from sebaceous glands (DME). No study has been reported in the literature comparing the diagnostic value of these two techniques.

Objective: To estimate whether there are placental histopathologic abnormalities associated with neonatal periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), a major precursor of cerebral palsy.

Methods: This is a case-control study of 167 neonates born between 23 and 34 weeks of gestation diagnosed with PVL by head ultrasonography within 6 weeks of birth, and 167 control neonates without neurologic morbidity matched by gestational age. Placentas for both case neonates and control neonates were reviewed by two perinatal pathologists who were blinded to neonatal course.

Scimitar syndrome is a rare congenital cardiopulmonary malformation characterized by hypoplasia of the right lung and drainage of the right pulmonary veins into the vena cava inferior. It may also be associated with cardiac dextroversion and anomalies of the tracheobronchial system, cardiovascular system, and diaphragm. Some cases are asymptomatic with others diagnosed in early-childhood period with pulmonary hypoplasia and other associated malformations.

Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is the most common deformity of the spine, affecting 2-4% of the population. Previous studies have shown that the vertebrae in scoliotic spines undergo abnormal shape changes, however there has been little exploration of how scoliosis affects bone density distribution within the vertebrae. In this study, existing CT scans of 53 female idiopathic scoliosis patients with right-sided main thoracic curves were used to measure the lateral (right to left) bone density profile at mid-height through each vertebral body.

Often used interchangeably, chronic lung disease (CLD) or bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) develops primarily in extremely low birth weight infants weighing <1000 g who receive prolonged oxygen therapy and or positive pressure ventilation. CLD, which occurs in as many as 30 percent of infants born weighing <1000 g, contributes significantly to the morbidity and mortality seen in very low birth weight infants. Despite extensive research aimed at identifying risk factors and devising preventative therapies, many questions about the etiology and pathogenesis of BPD remain.

An efficient synthesis of HIV integrase inhibitor (S)-(-)-1 via a unique asymmetric hydrogenation of a mixture of imines/enamine 5a-5b/5c is described. Hydrogenation of the imines/enamine by a Rh(I)-Josiphos complex afforded 6 in 90% yield and 90% ee. Amide formation completed the synthesis of 1 in 58% overall yield from 2, which is readily available from 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran in a seven-step sequence.

Reduced SHOX gene expression has been demonstrated to be associated with all skeletal abnormalities in Turner syndrome, other than scoliosis (and kyphosis). There is evidence to suggest that Turner syndrome scoliosis is clinically and radiologically similar to idiopathic scoliosis, although the phenotypes are dissimilar. This pilot gene expression study used relative quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) of the SHOX (short stature on X) gene to determine whether it is expressed in vertebral body growth plates in idiopathic and congenital scoliosis.

Purpose Of Research: Although the pathogenesis of myasthenia gravis (MG) as an antibody mediated disorder of acetylcholine receptors (AChRs) at neuromuscular junctions is well understood, the origin of the autoimmune response is unclear. The thymus is intimately involved in initiation of the autoimmune response; the antigen, AChR, is present in the thymus, but how the autoimmune response is triggered is not known. Granzyme B (GrB), a proteolytic enzyme present in cytolytic T cells and natural killer (NK) cells, selectively cleaves many potential autoantigens (but few non-autoantigens), generating novel fragments that trigger autoreactive responses.
