We demonstrate that secreted CLCA1 activates calcium-dependent chloride currents in HEK293T cells in a paracrine fashion, and endogenous TMEM16A/Anoctamin1 conducts the currents. Exposure to exogenous CLCA1 increases cell surface levels of TMEM16A and cellular binding experiments indicate CLCA1 engages TMEM16A on the surface of these cells.

Correlation consistent basis sets (cc-PVXZ) were augmented by p-type Gaussian functions placed above and below the planes of C6 moieties. Møller-Plesset (MP2, SCS-MP2) and coupled cluster [CCSD(T)] calculations show that such generated basis sets provide an accurate description of π-stacking systems with favorable computation times compared to the standard augmented basis sets.

We have used noncontact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to study the rutile TiO(011) surface. A series of (2 × 1) reconstructions were observed, including two types of (4 × 1) reconstruction. High-resolution NC-AFM and STM images indicate that the (4 × 1)-α phase has the same structural elements as the more widely reported (2 × 1) reconstruction.

While all clusters exhibit a core/shell phase separation pattern in their most stable, T = 0 structure, different melting mechanisms are identified depending on the ranges and their mismatch, including two-step melting of the surface and the core or premelting as alloying. The preference for emitting A or B particles upon evaporation has been evaluated assuming that the cluster is either thermally equilibrated or vibrationally excited in its ground state structure, and compared to the predictions of the Weisskopf theory.

Enhanced image contrast has been seen at graphene-layered steps a few nanometers in height by means of photon-induced near-field electron microscopy (PINEM) using synchronous femtosecond pulses of light and electrons. The observed steps are formed by the edges of graphene strips lying on the surface of a graphene substrate, where the strips are hundreds of nanometers in width and many micrometers in length. PINEM measurements reflect the interaction of imaging electrons and induced (near) electric fields at the steps, and this leads to a much higher contrast than that achieved in bright-field transmission electron microscopy imaging of the same strips.
