Purpose: Hip fractures in elderly individuals are associated with high mortality rates, even with advanced treatment options. Identifying factors correlated with mortality could guide potential preventive strategies. Elevated aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels, as well as the AST/ALT ratio (AAR), have been associated with mortality in various diseases, but their association with hip fracture mortality remains underexplored.

This study aimed to investigate the macroscopic, light microscopic (LM) and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) characteristics of the pecten oculi in common kestrels (Falco tinnunculus). A total of six eyeballs from three common kestrels were used as the study material. The examination revealed that the bulbus oculi was spherical in shape and its diameter exceeded the axial-global length.

  • High-power tunable lasers are highly sought after for their applications in telecom, ranging, and molecular sensing, but integrated photonics has struggled with power due to size limitations.
  • The introduction of large-mode-area (LMA) fibers in the late 90s significantly improved the power capability of fiber systems by increasing the optical mode area.
  • This study demonstrates a silicon photonics-based LMA power amplifier that achieves an output power of 1.8W over a 60nm tunability range, indicating a potential advancement in integrated lasers for high-power applications that can compete with traditional bench systems.

Objectives: This study investigated the utility of specific predictive and discriminative items within the Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ) for distinguishing between autism spectrum disorder (ASD), intellectual disability (ID), and co-occurring ASD + ID in children.

Methods: A total of 137 children aged 4 to 12 years (52 typically developing (TD), 34 ASD, 26 ID, 25 ASD + ID) were included in the study. Cognitive development assessments were conducted for the ASD, ID, and ASD + ID groups in suitable cases.

Introduction: Localized scleroderma is a rare inflammatory skin disease that causes sclerosis in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. Oxidative stress may play a role in the etiology or be responsible for the chronicity or progression of the disease.

Objectives: We aimed to investigate the presence of oxidative stress in patients with localized scleroderma by examining thiol-disulfide balance, ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), and prolidase parameters.

Aim: Obesity has emerged as a critical risk factor for various cerebrovascular diseases. Studies have demonstrated the detrimental effects of obesity on vascular health, including endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, and oxidative stress, which may exacerbate vascular complications following hemorrhagic stroke. In this study, the effect of obesity on the severity of cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage was investigated.

Background: Liver transplantation (LT) is a crucial treatment for infants with end-stage liver disease, yet specific data on LT outcomes in infants under 12 months old remain limited. This study aims to present the clinical course and outcomes of infants who underwent LT, assessing the impact of demographic and etiological differences on mortality and survival.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 64 infants (< 12 months) who underwent LT between January 2019 and March 2024.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to assess how specific anatomical measurements from X-rays (volar tilt, radial length, radial inclination, and ulnar variance) can help predict deformities in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and diagnose the condition in those with nonspecific wrist pain.
  • - A total of 138 participants (98 with rheumatoid arthritis and 40 controls) were evaluated, revealing that those with rheumatoid arthritis had significantly lower volar tilt and radial length compared to the control group, but no differences were found between the rheumatoid arthritis groups with and without deformities.
  • - The findings suggest that low volar tilt and radial length may serve as early indications of rheumatoid arthritis on X-rays, potentially aiding in the diagnosis of hard-to-identify cases, especially

Small airway fibrosis plays a critical role in the progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Previous research has suggested that Urotensin-II (U-II) and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) may contribute to pathological fibrosis in various organs, including the cardiovascular system, lungs, and liver. However, their specific relationship with airway fibrosis in COPD has not yet been thoroughly investigated.

Misprocessing of amyloid precursor protein (APP) is one of the major causes of Alzheimer's disease. APP comprises a large extracellular region, a single transmembrane helix and a short cytoplasmic tail containing an NPxY motif (normally referred to as the YENPTY motif). Talins are synaptic scaffold proteins that connect the cytoskeletal machinery to the plasma membrane via binding NPxY motifs in the cytoplasmic tail of integrins.

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD), also known as histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis, is a rare, self-limiting disorder characterized by fever typically lasting for 1 week up to 1 month and painful necrotizing lymphadenopathy, primarily affecting young adults of Asian ancestry. Although the exact cause remains unclear, infectious and autoimmune mechanisms have been implicated in the pathogenesis of the disease. In this case series, we aim to describe the histopathological features of KFD over a ten-year period at Mount Sinai Medical Center of Florida, and review the current understanding of its pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management.

Background: Cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) is manifested on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) by white matter hyperintensities, lacunes, microbleeds, and atrophy. While these manifestations can be part of normal aging, a high burden has been associated with cognitive impairment and vascular events. Distinguishing between normal versus abnormal SVD lesion burden in clinical practice remains complex.

The JCVI-Syn3 organism is a minimal organism derived from Mycoplasma mycoides capri, which is capable of self-replication. While the ancestor has 863 genes, the synthetic progeny has only 473, with 434 of these coding for proteins. Despite initial efforts to understand all functions of the organism, a significant number of these protein-coding genes still have unknown functions, and subsequent studies have been only partially successful in elucidating their roles.

  • Melatonin shows a therapeutic effect for treating migraines, but how it works at the receptor level was previously unclear.
  • In this study, researchers used rat models and various antagonists to analyze how melatonin affects pain behaviors, CGRP levels, and mast cell activation related to migraine conditions.
  • The findings indicate that melatonin reduces migraine symptoms by modulating CGRP expression and mast cell activation, primarily through the MT2 receptor, while its effects are not reversed by the MT3 antagonist prazosin.
