Bronchial compression due to pulmonary artery dilation is an important problem in infants with congenital heart disease, and can complicate the postoperative course. In recent years, airway stenting has become a popular treatment for these cases. We achieved success with endobronchial stenting in a two-month-old infant with bronchial compression caused by a dilated pulmonary artery.

Cardiac tamponade is a rare but life-threatening complication of umbilical venous catheterization in the newborn. Most complications from central venous catheters are related to incorrect position of the catheter and it is emphasized to confirm the position of the catheter tip after placement in order to avoid possible complications. We present an unusual complication of cardiac tamponade because of umbilical venous catheterization in a term newborn which is extremely rare with correct location of the catheter tip at the junction of inferior vena cava and right atrium.

Background: Pregnant women with female fetuses have higher maternal serum human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels than pregnant women with male fetuses. Ki-67, a cell proliferation and activity marker, is confined mostly in the nuclei of villous cytotrophoblasts of the human placenta. In this study, we examined the effect of fetal gender on the cytotrophoblast cell activity in human term placenta, with special regard to maternal serum and cord blood hCG levels.

Objective: Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is indicated for suspected atrial septal pathology and for monitoring of interventional procedures such as an atrial septal defect (ASD) closure during cardiac catheterization. Transesophageal echocardiography also helps to demonstrate postoperative complications and residual defects of complex congenital cardiac anomalies.

Methods: Transesophageal echocardiography was performed in 112 pediatric patients with or suspected atrial pathology at our institution between 1999-2002, using the standard techniques.

Failure of embryologic development of a lobe of the thyroid gland is a rare anomaly. Usually, this condition is diagnosed when there are some other pathologic conditions in the gland and is often found when a patient presents with a thyroid nodule, which in reality is compensatory hypertrophy of the side that is present, therefore appearing as a nodule. A variety of pathological conditions occur in the remaining thyroid tissue in association with this rare anomaly such as adenoma, carcinoma, subacute thyroiditis, colloid nodule, Graves' disease, simple goiter, and Hashimoto thyroiditis.

5-Pyrimidylboronic acid and 2-methoxy-5-pyrimidylboronic acid 4 have been synthesised by lithium-halogen exchange reactions on 5-bromopyrimidine and 2-methoxy-5-bromopyrimidine, respectively, followed by reaction with triisopropylborate. Suzuki cross-coupling reactions of 2 and 4 with heteroaryl halides [Na(2)CO(3), Pd(PPh(3))(2)Cl(2), 1,4-dioxane, 95 degrees C] yield heteroarylpyrimidines (heteroaryl = thienyl, quinolyl and pyrimidyl). Two-fold reaction of 2 with 4,6-dichloropyrimidine 12 gave 4,6-bis(5-pyrimidyl)pyrimidine 8(56% yield).
