Sarcomas of the breast are rare, accounting for about 1% of all malignant breast tumors. Leiomyosarcoma of the breast was an almost unknown tumor until some 20 years ago, and the few previously published cases lacked detailed information. Only 11 well-documented cases of leiomyosarcoma of the breast had been reported in the literature up to February 1992.

Eosinophilic granuloma of bone is the localised and most benign form of Langerhans-cell histiocytosis, previously known as histiocytosis X and is characterised by lytic lesions of one or more bones. It is a disease of children and adolescents, and very rarely affects adults. We report a 34-year-old patient with a solitary eosinophilic granuloma involving the fifth lumbar vertebra which produced sciatica.

A rare case of distal aneurysm of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (d PICA) found in association with distal anterior cerebral artery (d ACA) and middle cerebral artery (MCA) aneurysms is described. d PICA aneurysm causing subarachnoid hemorrhage was successfully clipped. The aneurysmal sac was excised and examined pathologically; no infectious etiology was found.

A surgically confirmed primary leptomeningeal malignant melanoma (PLMM) discovered at the parietal region is reported in a 72-year-old male. He developed progressive right hemiparesis and speech disorders caused by a parietal large mass that simulated a growing meningioma. A well-defined, dark-black tumor was removed completely and was histopathologically diagnosed as a malignant melanoma.

Objectives: To investigate the presence of urinary cytokines, after bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) therapy, in order to provide further insight into the mechanisms of action of intravesical BCG therapy.

Method: Urine levels of interleukin-2 (IL-2), interleukin-2 receptor (IL-2R), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha) levels were determined in 34 patients with superficial bladder tumors after a six-week course of intravesical BCG therapy. The urine samples were obtained at the fifth hour following the sixth course of therapy and the determinations were made by using an (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)) technique.

In the present study, urinary tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF) levels in nonproliferative glomerulopathies [minimal change disease (n = 4), focal glomerulosclerosis (n = 4), membranous glomerulonephritis (GN) (n = 1), and in patients with chronic glomerulopathies (n = 4)] were compared to proliferative ones [a rapidly progressive GN patient and 8 patients with mesangial proliferative GN and membranoproliferative GN (MPGN) who had clinically active disease]. The mean urine TNF levels of the proliferative group were significantly higher than both the nonproliferative GN and 4 controls, whereas the mean value of the nonproliferative group was not significantly different than the controls. The urine TNF levels in 4 MPGN patients with chronic disease and in 2 who entered remission were also very low.

Previous studies show that human myeloma-derived cell lines specifically adhere to fibronectin (FN) through very late antigen-4 (VLA-4; alpha 4 beta 1 integrin complex) and RGD-peptide mechanisms, which may contribute to the localization of tumor cells in bone marrow (BM). In these studies, we characterized the adhesion of myeloma-derived cell lines to both normal and myeloma BM stromal cells (BMSCs) and the effect of adhesion on DNA synthesis. Because interleukin-6 (IL-6) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of multiple myeloma, we also examined the effects of tumor cell adhesion on IL-6 secretion by BMSCs.

The role of interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the growth of B cell derived hairy cell leukemia (HCL) was characterized. Purified hairy cells (HCs) did not increase DNA synthesis in vitro in response to exogenous IL-6; however, they expressed IL-6 receptor (IL-6R) mRNA and bound directly fluorochrome labeled IL-6. IL-6 mRNA was not detectable in tumor cells by Northern blotting, but was evident using PCR amplification.

The present studies have examined the effects of mitogens on induction of early response gene expression in normal peripheral blood T and Jurkat cells. Pokeweed mitogen (PWM) or anti-CD3 significantly increases c-jun messenger RNA (mRNA) levels in T cells. This transient PWM-related increase in c-jun transcripts is maximal after 15 to 30 minutes of exposure of T cells to PWM.

Damage which occurs following spinal traumas is often irreversible. During recent years free oxygen radicals formed due to the pathological changes following neural tissue ischemia have been identified as being responsible for the ethio-pathogenesis of such damage. In our experimental study, model lesions are formed in spinal cords of rats by standard trauma.

Interleukin-11 (IL-11) is a recently described stromal-derived cytokine that supports the growth of an IL-6-dependent murine plasmacytoma line in the presence of antibody to IL-6 and appears to act in a manner similar to IL-6 on hematopoietic stem cells. Because IL-6 is known to promote differentiation of normal human B cells, the role of IL-11 on B-cell differentiation in vitro was characterized. IL-11 does not result in significantly increased DNA synthesis or Ig secretion by purified B cells alone or B cells cultured with Staphylococcus Cowan I, a T-cell-independent B-cell mitogen.

In this report we present two families with von Hippel-Lindau syndrome. We operated on haemangioblastomas in two members, one from each, in our clinic. In the first family we saw 17 lesions in 9 members.

In multiple myeloma, malignant plasma cells are localized in marrow and rarely circulate in peripheral blood. To investigate the role of adhesion proteins in this process, we determined the expression and function of adhesion molecules on cell lines derived from patients with myeloma. The U266, ARH-77, IM-9, and HS-Sultan cell lines strongly expressed beta 1 and alpha 4 integrins (89% to 98% positive), confirming that VLA-4 is the principal integrin on these cell lines.

Serial measurements of C3 and C4 complement components were performed in 50 patients with acute, uncomplicated viral hepatitis, in the beginning of the symptoms and in the peaks of serum transaminases. There were 17 patients diagnosed as having Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection and 33 patients diagnosed as having Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. There were 4 women and 46 men with a mean age of 22.

The role of interleukin 6 (IL-6) in the growth of five multiple myeloma-derived cell lines was characterized. The U266 and RPMI 8226 cell lines demonstrated increased DNA synthesis when cultured with exogenous IL-6, expressed IL-6 cell surface receptors (IL-6Rs) and expressed mRNA for IL-6R. However, these cells did not secrete detectable IL-6 protein, and a neutralizing antibody to IL-6 did not inhibit their growth.

World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a new Inactivated Rabies Vaccine grown on Vero Cells, (PVRV: Purified Vero Rabies Vaccine) with the vaccine cultivated on Human Diploid Cells (HDCV: Human Diploid Cell Vaccine), for both pre and post-exposure prophylaxis. Following the widespread use of HDCV and PVRV, many comparative clinical trials have been conducted, studying the safety and predictive values of these two vaccines. In the present study, using the schedule recommended by the WHO for preexposure prophylaxis, days on 0, 7 and 21, we vaccinated 90 healthy male volunteers, age ranged between 18 and 24 (mean 20) and may expose to a risk of rabies.
