Aim: The main aim was to investigate differences between the psychological distress of patients with a first diagnosis of cancer, those experiencing their first recurrence, and those experiencing later recurrences. Little is known about the development of cancer patients' psychological distress and whether it becomes more severe with greater incidence of recurrence.

Method: A total of 218 patients from 3 oncology outpatient clinics in Iceland were assessed with the Brief Symptom Inventory Scale 18 (BSI 18).

A significantly simpler analog of the natural product migrastatin, termed migrastatin ether (ME), has been prepared and evaluated. Both in vivo and in vitro studies indicate that ME exhibits a concentration-dependent inhibitory effect on migration of breast cancer cells.

This report describes the clinical and electrophysiological features of an 8-year-old boy with autoimmune neuromuscular hyperexcitability. He presented with features of lower extremity pain, stiffness, and rippling muscles. The diagnosis was made by electromyography and supported by the presence of an antibody directed against nicotinic acetylcholine receptors.

Yields for J/psi production in Cu+Cu collisions at sqrt s_NN=200 GeV have been measured over the rapidity range |y|<2.2 and compared with results in p+p and Au+Au collisions at the same energy. The Cu+Cu data offer greatly improved precision over existing Au+Au data for J/psi production in collisions with small to intermediate numbers of participants, in the range where the quark-gluon plasma transition threshold is predicted to lie.

The adrenal gland is a vulnerable target for toxic insult. Disruption of adrenal steroidogenesis and hormone secretion may cause serious effects on human health. A human in vitro model is needed to predict effects, and elucidate mechanisms of endocrine disruption and adrenal toxicity.

Lateral epicondylitis is a common cause of elbow pain, and decreased microcirculation in extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) has recently been suggested to contribute to the symptoms. The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the treatment response after injection of botulinum toxin type A. Ten patients with unilateral epicondylitis and decreased intramuscular blood flow in ECRB participated.

Results from 2 relational-priming experiments suggest the existence of an automatic analogical coordination between semantic and arithmetic relations. Word pairs denoting object sets served as primes in a task that elicits "obligatory" activation of addition facts (5 + 3 activates 8; J. LeFevre, J.

Two cationic gemini surfactants having ester bonds between the hydrophobic tail and the cationic moiety have been synthesized. The ester bonds were either with the ester carbonyl group away from the positive charge (esterquat type arrangement) or facing the positive charge (betaine ester type arrangement). The chemical hydrolysis of the surfactants was investigated and compared with the hydrolysis of the corresponding monomeric surfactants.

Maedi-visna virus (MVV) is a lentivirus of sheep causing chronic inflammatory disease of the lungs (maedi) and the nervous system (visna). We have previously shown that a duplicated sequence in the long terminal repeat (LTR) of MVV is a determinant of cell tropism. Here, we demonstrate that deletion of a CAAAT sequence from either one of the repeats resulted in poor virus growth in sheep choroid plexus cells.

The focus on the refinement, reduction and replacement of animal use in toxicity testing requires the development of cell-based systems that mimic the effects of xenobiotics in human tissues. The human adrenocortical carcinoma cell line, H295R, has been proposed as a model for studies on adrenal steroidogenesis and its disruption. In this study, expression profiles for nine adrenal steroidogenic genes were characterized in H295R cells using real-time RT-PCR.

The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate intramuscular microcirculation in extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) in patients with lateral epicondylitis. Ten patients with unilateral epicondylitis, mean duration of symptoms of 39 (12-96) months participated. The diagnosis was based on clinical examination and none was under treatment for the last 6 months.

Adsorption of a series of ethoxylated cationic surfactants at model surfaces of alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers was studied by the surface plasmon resonance technique. Model surfaces were tailor-made by choosing alkanethiols or mixtures of alkanethiols with methyl, hydroxyl, carboxyl, and trimethylammonium groups in terminal position. The ethoxylated and quaternized cationic surfactants having from 2 to 18 oxyethylene units, showed a decrease in adsorbed amount with increasing oxyethylene chain length for both hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces.

Objective: To investigate the perinatal adaptive response of the adrenal blood flow/adrenal fractional moving blood volume (AFMBV) and carotid blood flow (CBF), in sheep fetuses subjected to severe acute intrauterine hypoxia/asphyxia induced by total cord occlusion.

Methods: Adrenal blood flow velocity, AFMBV and CBF were measured in 13 exteriorized fetal sheep; eight of them underwent total umbilical cord occlusion to induce severe acute hypoxia/asphyxia. Five lambs were used as sham controls.

The force-distance curves of 12-2-12 and 12-4-12 Gemini quaternary ammonium bromide surfactants on mica and silica surfaces obtained by atomic force microscopy (AFM) were correlated with the structure of the adsorption layer. The critical micelle concentration was measured in the presence or absence of electrolyte. The electrolyte effect (the decrease of CMC) is significantly more pronounced for Gemini than for single-chain surfactants.

Inflammation can predispose to myocardial infarction (MI), and mannan binding lectin (MBL) promotes phagocytic clearance of inflammatory agents, but the predictive value of MBL levels for MI is not known. MBL was analyzed in subgroups of the population-based Reykjavik study, a cohort of 19,381 participants recruited from 1967. MBL levels were very stable over time (self correlation: 0.

J/psi production has been measured in proton-proton collisions at square root of s=200 GeV over a wide rapidity and transverse momentum range by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Distributions of the rapidity and transverse momentum, along with measurements of the mean transverse momentum and total production cross section are presented and compared to available theoretical calculations. The total J/psi cross section is 4.

Mercury and selenium in whole blood and serum of 245 17-year old Swedish adolescents were analysed. The relationships between these elements' concentrations and the consumption of fish as well as the number of dental amalgam fillings were studied. The geometric means (GM) of the mercury concentrations were 1.

Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) is an important component of innate immunity that can bind to certain sugar residues on the surface of many types of pathogenic micro-organisms. On binding, MBL generates opsonic activity mainly through activation of the complement system. Genetically determined MBL deficiency is very common and can be associated with increased susceptibility to a variety of infections, especially in children and immunosuppressed individuals.
