Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzes the final diagnoses and mortality rates (30-day and 1-year) in patients treated with salbutamol by ambulance personnel for respiratory distress in Central Denmark (2018-2019).
  • It includes 6,318 ambulance transports, highlighting conditions such as acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD), community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), and asthma, with differing mortality rates across these groups.
  • The findings emphasize high mortality rates among those needing bronchodilator treatment, particularly in AECOPD and heart disease patients, while asthma patients and those under 18 show lower mortality, suggesting the use of inhaled bronchodilators as an important indicator of serious respiratory distress requiring prompt action.

Background: Pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) regulates bioavailability of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) in various tissues by proteolytic cleavage of a subset of IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs). Pre-clinical studies have established a role of PAPP-A in atherosclerosis and proposed that targeting the proteolytic activity of PAPP-A has therapeutic value. This study aimed to investigate whether human atherosclerotic plaques contain proteolytically active PAPP-A, a prerequisite for further considering PAPP-A as a therapeutic target in patients.

For steel bridges, corrosion has historically led to bridge failures, resulting in fatalities and injuries. To enhance public safety and prevent such incidents, authorities mandate in-situ evaluation and reporting of corroded members. The current inspection and evaluation protocol is characterized by intense labor, traffic delays, and poor capacity predictions.

Background: Remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) is a simple and noninvasive procedure that has proved to be safe and feasible in numerous smaller clinical trials. Mixed results have been found in recent large randomized controlled trials. This is a post hoc subgroup analysis of the RESIST trial (Remote Ischemic Conditioning in Patients With Acute Stroke), investigating the effect of RIC in different acute ischemic stroke etiologies, and whether an effect was modified by treatment adherence.

Background: A high concentration of inspired supplemental oxygen may possibly cause hypercapnia and acidosis and increase mortality in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). Even so, patients with AECOPD are being treated with high oxygen flow rates when receiving inhalation drugs in the prehospital setting. A cluster-randomised controlled trial found that reduced oxygen delivery by titrated treatment reduced mortality-a result supported by observational studies-but the results have never been reproduced.

During the production of fiber-reinforced plastics using resin transfer molding (RTM), various characteristic defects and flaws can occur, such as fiber displacement and fiber waviness. Particularly in high-pressure RTM (HP-RTM), fiber misalignments are generated during infiltration by local peaks in the flow rate, leading to a significant reduction in the mechanical properties. To minimize or avoid this effect, the manufacturing process must be well controlled.

Accurate estimation of ambulance transport time from the scene of incident to arrival at the emergency department (ED) is important for effective resource management and emergency care system planning. Further, differences in transport times between different urgency levels highlight the benefits of ambulance transports with highest urgency level in a setting where ambulances are allowed to not follow standard traffic rules. The objective of the study is to compare ambulance urgency level on the differences in estimates of ambulance transport times generated by Google Maps and the observed transport times in a prehospital setting where emergency vehicles have their own traffic laws.

Piezoceramic transducers (PCTs) bonded to carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite structures must be durable as well as remain properly bonded to the structure in order to provide reliable data for accurate guided-wave-based structural health monitoring (SHM) of aeronautical components. The current method of bonding transducers to composite structures through epoxy adhesives faces some shortcomings, such as difficult reparability, lack of weldability, longer curing cycles, and shorter shelf life. To overcome these shortcomings, a new efficient procedure for bonding the transducers to thermoplastic (TP) composite structures was developed by utilizing TP adhesive films.

Freeze Foams are cellular, ceramic structures with hierarchical pore structures that are manufactured using the direct foaming process. By tailoring their morphology and strength, these foam structures are able to cover a wide range of application. Earlier works identified that pore-forming influencing factors (water and air content, suspension temperature, as well as pressure reduction rate) dictate the constitution on a macroscopic and microscopic scale.

Article Synopsis
  • - PAPP-A, an enzyme involved in breaking down IGF-binding proteins, has been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and higher all-cause mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D), specifically in a study of 1284 participants over 5 years.
  • - The study found that higher levels of STC2 and PAPP-A, as well as IGFBP4, correlate with increased mortality rates, while lower levels of IGF1 are associated with higher mortality.
  • - The findings suggest that while PAPP-A contributes to CVD risk and mortality, STC2 might act as a counterbalance to its harmful effects or have independent impacts beyond the PAPP-A-
