Article Synopsis
  • Alternatives to neonicotinoids are essential for controlling cereal aphids, and two formulations of Beauveria bassiana strains (Bb and TBb) were tested against them in a winter wheat crop.
  • In field trials, both fungal treatments significantly reduced aphid infestation and density compared to control, with TBb showing higher efficacy than Bb.
  • Although imidacloprid had quicker effects, its efficacy varied more, suggesting that the fungal options are viable contenders for aphid management.

Article Synopsis
  • Pre-mRNA splicing is essential for gene expression in plants, involving the spliceosome and specific splicing factors, with exons averaging around 180 nucleotides in size.
  • Micro exons (less than 51 nucleotides) play critical roles in plant development and environmental responses but are not well understood, particularly regarding their regulation.
  • The study identifies GRP20, an RNA-binding protein, as vital for splicing over 2,100 genes related to flower development and environmental responses, highlighting its role in micro-exon retention and the interaction with spliceosome components.

Pectin is a critical component of the plant cell wall, supporting wall biomechanics and contributing to cell wall signaling in response to stress. The plant cell carefully regulates pectin methylesterification with endogenous pectin methylesterases (PMEs) and their inhibitors (PMEIs) to promote growth and protect against pathogens. We expressed pectin methylesterase (AnPME) in plants to determine the impacts of methylesterification status on pectin function.

The general theory of a diaphragm fiber-optic sensor (DFOS) is proposed. We use a critical test to determine if a DFOS is based on Fabry-Perot interference or intensity modulation. By use of the critical test, this is the first design, to the best of our knowledge, of a purely Fabry-Perot DFOS, fabricated with microelectromechanical system technology, and characterized as an audible microphone and ultrasonic hydrophone with orders of improvement in signal-to-noise ratio.
