The aim of the study was to evaluate the risk and threshold doses of lens opacity among residents exposed to low-dose radiation. Residents aged ≥45 years were recruited from a high natural background radiation (HNBR) area in Yangjiang City and a control area selected from nearby Enping City. Lens opacities (LOPs) were classified according to the Lens Opacities Classification System (LOCS) III system.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the health effects of long-term low dose radiation on immune function in residents of the Yangjiang High Background Radiation Area (HBRA) by analyzing lymphocyte subsets and serum cytokines.
  • Using flow cytometry, researchers found significantly increased CD8 T lymphocyte numbers and elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines in the HBRA group compared to a control group, adjusting for age and BMI.
  • ELISA validation confirmed these findings, indicating that long-term exposure to low dose radiation adversely affects immune responses through increased CD8 T cells and heightened inflammatory biomarkers.
