Brittleness is an important mechanical property of rock. Accurately evaluating rock brittleness and its influence on the TBM tunnelling performance is necessary. In this work, via two practical engineering cases, with the aim of overcoming the difficulty of penetrating extremely hard rock (breccia fused tuff) in the project, the influence of rock brittleness on the TBM tunnelling performance was studied via comparative analysis with that project.

Spodoptera frugiperda is a long-distance migratory pest with strong dispersal ability, fast reproduction speed and destructive feeding, so it is difficult to prevent and control. Pyrethroid insecticides are commonly used in pest insects control, And since the voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) serves as a major target of pyrethroids, it is important to study this gene for pest control. VGSC is an integral transmembrane protein consisting of approximately 2,000 amino acid residues found in neurons, myocytes, endocrine cells, and ovarian cells and involved in the initiation and propagation of excitable cellular action potentials.

The anthranilic diamide insecticide chlorantraniliprole has been extensively applied to control Lepidoptera pests. However, its overuse leads to the development of resistance and accumulation of residue in the environment. Four P450s (CYP6CV5, CYP9A68, CYP321F3, and CYP324A12) were first found to be constitutively overexpressed in an SSB CAP-resistant strain.

RNA interference (RNAi) is recognized as a new and environmentally friendly pest control strategy due to its high specificity. However, the RNAi efficiency is relatively low in many sucking insect pests, such as Apolygus lucorum. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop new and effective ways of dsRNA delivery.

Various strategies have been developed to improve the applicability of hydrophobic pesticides for better effectiveness in agriculture. However, existing formulations of hydrophobic pesticides still suffer from complicated processing, abused organic solvents, indispensable surfactants, or inescapable ecotoxicity, which strictly limit their applications. Herein, a dynamic covalent bond tailored pesticide (fipronil) amphiphile is constructed to address the above issues, which accomplishes the nanodispersion, full wetting, and precise delivery without organic solvents, surfactants, and materials simultaneously.

RNA interference (RNAi) is a powerful tool that post-transcriptionally silences target genes in eukaryotic cells. However, silencing efficacy varies greatly among different insect species. Recently, we met with little success when attempting to knock down genes in the mirid bug Apolygus lucorum via dsRNA injection.

The plant mirid bug is an omnivorous pest that can cause considerable economic damage. The steroid hormone 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) is mainly responsible for molting and metamorphosis. The adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is an intracellular energy sensor regulated by 20E, and its activity is regulated allosterically through phosphorylation.

The anthranilic diamide insecticide chlorantraniliprole is highly effective against Lepidoptera pests, but the underlying mechanisms of toxic effects of chlorantraniliprole exposures for adapting to the chemical environment are poorly known in fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E.Smith).

Background: The rice striped stem borer (SSB), Chilo suppressalis (Walker), which is one of the most economically important phytophagous pests, has developed resistance to multiple insecticides. The resistance of SSB against chlorantraniliprole has been investigated in detail. However, the mechanism of its metabolic resistance has rarely been studied.

Background: The polyphagous pest Apolygus lucorum is now the dominant pest of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) cotton in China. In this study, the transcriptional and translational profiles of AlVg influenced by different hosts were identified, and then the correlations between AlVg gene or AlVg protein expression and key population proliferation parameters of A. lucorum were further clarified.

Heat shock cognate protein 70 (Hsc70) is a very important stress-resistance protein of insects against environmental stresses. We employed fluorescent real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction and Western-blot techniques to analyze the transcriptional and translational expression profiles of AlHSC70 under extreme temperature (4°C and 40°C) or 4 pesticide stresses in Apolygus lucorum. The results showed that the expression of AlHSC70 were significantly induced by cyhalothrin or extremely high temperature (40°C) in both transcriptional and translational levels (P < 0.
