Article Synopsis
  • Vitellogenin receptor (VgR) is essential for the uptake of vitellogenin (Vg) in oocytes, but its role is not well studied in spiders.
  • The pond wolf spider, Pardosa pseudoannulata, has two types of VgRs (VgR-1 and VgR-2), with VgR-1 being significantly more expressed in ovaries and crucial for vitellogenesis, unlike VgR-2.
  • Silencing VgR-1 via RNAi led to a longer pre-oviposition period, highlighting the receptor's importance in spider reproduction and the regulatory role of juvenile hormones in this process.

Objective: To investigate the biomechanical effects of different insertion angles of absorbable screws for the fixation of radial head fractures.

Methods: The finite element models used to simulate the fractures were created based on CT scans. Two absorbable screws were used to fix and maintain the stability of the fracture, and the angles between the screws were set to 0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75°, and 90°.

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a powerful non-invasive molecular imaging technique for the early detection, characterization, and "real-time" monitoring of disease, and for investigating the efficacy of drugs (Phelps, 2000; Ametamey et al., 2008). The development of molecular probes bearing short-lived positron-emitting radionuclides, such as F (half-life 110 min) or C (half-life 20 min), is crucial for PET imaging to collect in vivo metabolic information in a time-efficient manner (Deng et al.

Glioblastoma is a common malignant primary intracranial tumor characterized by rapid invasive growth and a high recurrence rate after surgery. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are involved in cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis, and abnormal miRNA expression is associated with the occurrence and progression of various tumors, including glioblastomas. The aim of this study was to determine the levels of miR-148a and integrin subunit alpha 9 (ITGA9) in glioblastoma tissues and cells and their involvement in cancer cell proliferation and migration.

MicroRNA-378 (miR-378) is dysregulated in multiple malignancies and is associated with tumor progression. However, the expression and mechanism of miR-378 in pituitary adenoma (PA) remains to be elucidated. In the present study, the role and mechanism of miR-378 in PA tumorigenesis and development was investigated.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the unclear mechanisms behind pituitary gland tumors (PGT), focusing on the relationship between vitamin D, its receptor (VDR), and the immune regulator interleukin (IL)-10.
  • Researchers collected and analyzed blood samples from PGT patients and healthy individuals, finding that vitamin D levels were negatively correlated with IL-10 expression in B cells.
  • The findings suggest that low VDR expression in B cells of PGT patients leads to increased IL-10, and that modulating VDR expression could be a potential therapy for PGT by regulating IL-10 levels.

Glioblastoma is the most common type of primary brain tumor in adults, and is usually fatal in a short duration. Acquiring a better understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms of glioblastoma is essential to the design of effective therapeutic strategies. Grb2-associated binding protein 2 (GAB2) is a member of the daughter of sevenless/Gab family of scaffolding adapters, and has been reported to be important in the development and progression of human cancer.

Objective: To conduct a meta-analysis for the correlation between cytochrome P450 4F2 (CYP4F2) rs2108622 (V433M) gene polymorphism and ischemic stroke.

Methods: We retrieved the case-control studies on the correlation between CYP4F2 V433M polymorphism and ischemic stroke included in domestic and international databases before January 2015 and selected the best genetic model, using RevMan 5.2 software for meta-analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • A two-stage genome-wide association study (GWAS) was conducted to identify susceptibility loci for schizophrenia in the Han Chinese population, involving a total of 5,675 individuals with schizophrenia and 7,202 healthy controls.
  • The study identified significant loci associated with schizophrenia at chromosome regions 6p21-p22.1 and 11p11.2, with multiple genetic markers showing strong statistical significance and varying odds ratios.
  • The findings suggest that genes NKAPL and ZKSCAN4, expressed in the developing mouse brain, could provide new insights into the underlying mechanisms of schizophrenia.

Background: In the past several years, increasing attention has been paid to the utility of a pseudocapsule in transphenoidal surgery for pituitary adenomas. However, prior studies focused more on the histological structure of the pseudocapsule and surgical technique. The objective of this study was to evaluate the overall therapeutic effectiveness of transsphenoidal pseudocapsule-based extracapsular resection for pituitary adenomas.

Due to the high influents of the device itself and the surrounding environment, the background brightness of the digital radiography image is uniform and the image shows big noise. Therefore, in order to identify digital radiography images precisely, a further image processing is necessary. In this study, adaptive filtering, histogram equalization techniques and difference image methods were used for image processing and the results show that these techniques were useful to denoise, to intensify brightness and to rectify the background.
