Geese, both wild and domestic, are generally considered part of the natural reservoir for influenza A viruses. The highly pathogenic H5 Goose/Guangdong avian influenza virus lineage that is still causing outbreaks worldwide was first detected in domestic geese in 1996. However, while wild geese might have a somewhat restricted role in the influenza ecosystem, the role of domestic geese is little studied.

Background: Early in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, Sunda pangolins (Manis javanica) involved in the illegal wildlife trade in mainland China were identified as hosts of severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronaviruses (SARSr-CoVs). Although it is unconfirmed whether pangolins or other traded wildlife served as intermediate hosts for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the trafficking of pangolins presents a clear risk for transmission of viruses with zoonotic and epizootic potential regardless. We have investigated the origins of pangolin carcasses seized in Hong Kong and have evaluated their potential exposure to SARSr-CoVs, other coronaviruses, and paramyxoviruses, aiming to address a gap in our knowledge with regard to the role of wildlife trade in the maintenance and emergence of pathogens with zoonotic and epizootic potential.

Background: Primary skull base chondrosarcoma (SBC) is a rare malignant central nervous system tumor, often involving the cavernous sinus. Complete excision of tumors invading this region is exceptionally challenging due to the presence of the internal carotid artery and numerous nerves within the cavernous sinus, particularly in cases with substantial tumor volume.

Case Presentation: This report describes a rare case of a massive primary SBC pushing the lateral wall of the cavernous sinus, measuring approximately 6.

  • Kidney stones are linked to abnormal biomineralization, and while the role of Annexin A6 (AnxA6) in their formation is unclear, this study investigates its involvement in calcium oxalate (CaOx) kidney stones.
  • Using an in vitro model with renal tubular epithelial cells, the study found that AnxA6 was significantly overexpressed in CaOx conditions and played a role in oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage.
  • The research concluded that AnxA6 contributes to the development of CaOx kidney stones by increasing oxidative stress associated with calcium release and enhancing the adhesion of oxalate to kidney cells.

Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a disorder experienced by many veterans of the 1991 Gulf War, with symptoms including fatigue, chronic pain, respiratory and memory problems. Exposure to toxic chemicals during the war, such as oil well fire smoke, pesticides, physiological stress, and nerve agents, is thought to have triggered abnormal neuroinflammatory responses that contribute to GWI. Previous studies have examined the acute effects of combined physiological stress and chemical exposures using GWI rodent models and presented findings related to neuroinflammation and changes in diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures, suggesting a neuroimmune basis for GWI.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) metabolism and cell growth uniquely rely on glutamine uptake by the transporter ASCT2. Despite previous data reporting cell growth inhibition after ASCT2 knockdown, we here show that ASCT2 CRISPR knockout is tolerated by TNBC cell lines. Despite the loss of a glutamine transporter and low rate of glutamine uptake, intracellular glutamine steady-state levels were increased in ASCT2 knockout compared to control cells.

  • Inhalation of crystalline silica (CS) can cause serious lung issues like chronic inflammation and pulmonary fibrosis (PF), which currently has few effective treatments.
  • This study is the first to explore how resveratrol (Res) may help treat PF by using a mix of network pharmacology and experimental methods to understand its effects better.
  • Results revealed that Res can reduce lung damage and other harmful effects by influencing the autophagy signaling pathway, specifically targeting the AMPK/mTOR pathway, highlighting its potential as a treatment for PF.

Rad6 is a canonical ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme known for its role in regulating chromosome-related cellular processes in yeast and has been proven to have multiple functions in , including insect-pathogenic lifestyle, UV damage repair, and conidiation. However, previous studies have only reported the key role of Rad6 in regulating conidial production in a nutrient-rich medium, without any deep mechanism analyses. In this study, we found that the disruption of Rad6 leads to a profound reduction in conidial production, irrespective of whether the fungus is cultivated in nutrient-rich or nutrient-poor environments.

As N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) ubiquitously exists in both insect cuticle and fungal cell walls, the GlcNAc sensor (Ngs1) potentially plays important roles in the interactions between entomopathogenic fungi and their insect hosts. However, the roles of the Ngs1 derived from the entomopathogens in response to the host's cuticle remain completely unexplored. In this study, a putative Ngs1 homolog was identified in the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana.

The discovery of alphacoronaviruses and betacoronaviruses in plateau pikas () expanded the host range of mammalian coronavirus (CoV) to a new order - Lagomorpha. However, the diversity and evolutionary relationships of CoVs in these plateau-region-specific animal population remains uncertain. We conducted a five-year longitudinal surveillance of CoVs harboured by pikas around Qinghai Lake, China.

Beauveria bassiana is a popular and eco-friendly biopesticide. During its pathogen-pest interaction, both N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) catabolism and anabolism are crucial for nutrient supply and cell-wall construction. The initiation of GlcNAc metabolism relies on the catalysis of GlcNAc kinase, which has been extensively studied in the human pathogen Candida albicans.

  • Guanxi is a key concept in Chinese culture that emphasizes the importance of building strong, trust-based relationships, which can significantly influence business interactions and resource accessibility.
  • * The study explores how different aspects of Guanxi, including emotional connections, reciprocity, and loyalty, act as mediators between organizational justice and work performance, while also considering the impact of employees' age.
  • * Findings indicate that, although age influences relationships in Guanxi, particularly between younger (millennials) and older employees, effective use of these cultural dynamics can benefit organizational practices and performance.

The poor prognosis observed in elderly individuals infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) remains a serious clinical burden and the underlying mechanism is unclear, which necessities detailed investigation of disease characteristics and research for efficient countermeasures. To simulate lethal coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in senescent human patients, 80-week-old male hamsters are intranasally inoculated with different doses of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.5 variant.

The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants raises concerns about the efficacy of existing COVID-19 vaccines and therapeutics. Previously, we identified a conserved cryptic class 5 epitope of SARS-CoV-2 receptor binding domain (RBD) by two cross-neutralizing antibodies 7D6 and 6D6. Intriguingly, this site remains resistant to substantial mutations occurred in ever-changing SARS-CoV-2 subvariants.

The controllable anchoring of multiple metal single-atoms (SAs) into a single support exhibits scientific and technological opportunities, while marrying the concentration-complex multimetallic SAs and high-entropy SAs (HESAs) into one SAC system remains a substantial challenge. Here, we present a substrate-mediated SAs formation strategy to successfully fabricate a library of multimetallic SAs and HESAs on MoS and MoSe supports, which can precisely control the doping location of SAs. Specially, the contents of SAs can continuously increase until the accessible Mo atoms on TMDs carriers are completely replaced by SAs, thus allowing the of much higher metal contents.
