Global potential energy surface (PES) exploration provides a unique route to predict the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of unknown materials, but the task is highly challenging for systems with tight covalent bonds. Here, we develop the local-softening stochastic surface walking (LS-SSW) method for scanning corrugated PESs. LS-SSW transforms the vibrational mode space of a system by adding pairwise penalty potentials with a self-adaption mechanism, which helps to delocalize and soften the strong local modes.

To realize the three-dimensional stabilization control of fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), we analyze the nonholonomic characteristics, constraint non-integrability, and controllability of UAVs. To simplify the trigonometric function term in the dynamics of the UAV and avoid the singularity problem of the Euler angle in describing attitude, we use the quaternion theory to transform the dynamics of the UAV to avoid the complex trigonometric function derivation, which makes the dynamic matrix more concise. Based on this, a continuous periodic time-varying controller (CPTVC) is designed, and the effectiveness of the controller is proved using the homogeneous method.

Impurity pinning has long been discussed to have a profound effect on the dynamics of an incommensurate charge density wave (CDW), which would otherwise slide through the lattice without resistance. Here, we visualize the impurity pinning evolution of the CDW in ZrTe_{3} using the variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. At low temperatures, we observe a quasi-1D incommensurate CDW modulation moderately correlated to the impurity positions, indicating a weak impurity pinning.
