Purpose: Urolithiasis significantly affects patient quality of life, yet the global standard of care predominantly focuses on achieving a stone free status, often ignoring patient reported outcomes. Currently, there are no specific measures available to assess the quality of life in the Polish population suffering from kidney stones. Therefore, this study aimed to develop and validate the Polish version of the Wisconsin Stone Quality of Life Questionnaire.

The persistence of high incidence and mortality rates associated with urologic cancers underscores the urgent need for effective and safe treatments. Conventional chemotherapy regimens are often limited by their high toxicity, the cancer's drug resistance, and the challenge of managing independently evolving multifocal spread. In this context, a repurposing strategy is particularly enticing.

Plants use surface receptors to perceive information about many aspects of their local environment. These receptors physically interact to form both steady state and signalling competent complexes. The signalling events downstream of receptor activation impact both plant developmental and immune responses.

Spatial organization of signalling events of the phytohormone auxin is fundamental for maintaining a dynamic transition from plant stem cells to differentiated descendants. The cambium, the stem cell niche mediating wood formation, fundamentally depends on auxin signalling but its exact role and spatial organization is obscure. Here we show that, while auxin signalling levels increase in differentiating cambium descendants, a moderate level of signalling in cambial stem cells is essential for cambium activity.

The cells of multicellular organisms receive extracellular signals using surface receptors. The extracellular domains (ECDs) of cell surface receptors function as interaction platforms, and as regulatory modules of receptor activation. Understanding how interactions between ECDs produce signal-competent receptor complexes is challenging because of their low biochemical tractability.

Plant stem cell niches, the meristems, require long-distance transport of energy metabolites and signaling molecules along the phloem tissue. However, currently it is unclear how specification of phloem cells is controlled. Here we show that the genes SUPPRESSOR OF MAX2 1-LIKE3 (SMXL3), SMXL4, and SMXL5 act as cell-autonomous key regulators of phloem formation in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Plants maintain pools of pluripotent stem cells which allow them to constantly produce new tissues and organs. Stem cell homeostasis in shoot and root tips depends on negative regulation by ligand-receptor pairs of the CLE peptide and leucine-rich repeat receptor-like kinase (LRR-RLK) families. However, regulation of the cambium, the stem cell niche required for lateral growth of shoots and roots, is poorly characterized.

The formation of stable emulsions in biphasic biotransformations catalyzed by microbial cells turned out to be a major hurdle for industrial implementation. Recently, a cost-effective and efficient downstream processing approach, using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2 ) for both irreversible emulsion destabilization (enabling complete phase separation within minutes of emulsion treatment) and product purification via extraction has been proposed by Brandenbusch et al. (2010).

A series of first-row transition metal complexes with the unsymmetrically disubstituted pyridazine ligand picolinaldehyde (6-chloro-3-pyridazinyl)hydrazone (PIPYH), featuring an easily abstractable proton in the backbone, was prepared. Ligand design was inspired by literature-known picolinaldehyde 2-pyridylhydrazone (PAPYH). Reaction of PIPYH with divalent nickel, copper, and zinc nitrates in ethanol led to complexes of the type [Cu(II)(PIPYH)(NO(3))(2)] (1) or [M(PIPYH)(2)](NO(3))(2) [M = Ni(II) (2) or Zn(II) (3)].

Three novel tridentate pyridazine phenolate ligands were prepared in high yields by Schiff-base condensation of salicylic aldehyde with various pyridazine hydrazines (substituent R in the 6 position: R = Cl (HL(Cl)), (t)Bu (HL((t)Bu)), or tol (HL(tol))). They react with [ReOCl(3)(OPPh(3))(SMe(2))] to form rare mononuclear trans-dichloro oxo complexes of general formula [ReOCl(2)(L(R))] with R = tol (1), (t)Bu (2), or Cl (3) as confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses of 1 and 2. They were found to be catalysts for oxidation of cyclooctene to the corresponding epoxide by tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP).

Tris(dimethylamino)silyl substituted aniline HNPh{Si(NMe2)3} (1) was prepared in high yield by metathesis reaction of lithium anilide with tris(dimethylamino)chlorosilane. 1 reacts with 1 equiv of n-butyl lithium at elevated temperatures to yield the corresponding lithium salt [LiNPh{Si(NMe2)3}] (2). Treatment of 1 with 2 equiv of n-butyl lithium leads to dilithiated compounds [Li2N(C6H4){Si(NMe2)3}]4 (3a) or [Li2(THF)2N(C6H4){Si(NMe2)3}]2 (3b) depending on the solvent used for crystallization, the former being crystallized in heptane, the latter in tetrahydrofuran (THF).

(13)C shifts of disubstituted cyclopentane and cyclohexane derivatives were compared in dependence on the relative configuration of the two substituents. A diequatorial substitution correlates with deshielding compared to other substitution patterns. Some novel fluorinated cyclopentanes and -hexanes including their DFT calculation-assisted structure elucidation are described.

Background: Heart rate turbulence (HRT) is a new and auspicious parameter for risk stratification in patients suffering from structural heart disease. The HRT parameters onset (TO) and slope (TS) are derived from Holter ECGs. Only a few studies have evaluated physiologic properties like age or prematurity of the ventricular beat on HRT.

Background: The glucocorticoid status of ovarian follicular fluid has been linked to oocyte quality. The aim of this study was to examine whether the concentrations of cortisone and cortisol and their calculated ratios in the follicular fluid and serum samples are predictive of IVF outcome.

Methods: In the prospective study of 387 patients (420 treatment cycles) undergoing IVF treatment the concentrations of cortisone and cortisol were measured with specific assays, and their calculated ratios in the follicular fluid and serum samples obtained after ovarian stimulation and induced ovulation were determined.

This study was designed to detect vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its soluble receptor (sVEGFR-1) in follicular fluid specimens and to evaluate the importance of sVEGFR-1 with respect to ovarian response to gonadotrophin stimulation. A total of 69 patients was treated for IVF with recombinant human follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). Concentrations of VEGF and sVEGFR-1 were quantified in follicular fluids from oocyte retrievals.

We previously carried out genetic and metabolic studies in a partially inbred herd of pigs carrying cholesterol-elevating mutations. Quantitative pedigree analysis indicated that apolipoprotein (apo)B and a second major gene were responsible for the hypercholesterolemia in these animals. In this study, we assessed LDL receptor function by three different methods: ligand blots of liver membranes using beta-very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) as a ligand; low density lipoprotein (LDL)-dependent proliferation of T-lymphocytes; and direct binding of 125I-labeled LDL to cultured skin fibroblasts.

Proliferation of granulosa cells is inversely related to differentiation and hormone production. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the intrafollicular and serum steroid concentrations and to compare these results to granulosa cell proliferation as measured by DNA flow cytometry. Human granulosa lutein cells in follicular fluid of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) patients were investigated with regard to ploidy, percentage of S-phase cells and proliferation index (PI: percentage of cells in the S- and G2/M-phase).

Vascularization is a prerequisite for corpus luteum formation. Angiogenesis is thought to be regulated by vascular growth factors. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)/vascular permeability factor (VPF) specifically induces endothelial cell proliferation as well as angiogenesis and increases capillary permeability.

Vascularization is a prominent event during corpus luteum formation, providing low density lipoproteins for steroid biosynthesis and enabling transport of secreted steroids. The process of vascularization is controlled by specific regulators. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), otherwise named vascular permeability factor (VPF), induces endothelial cell proliferation as well as angiogenesis in vivo and increases capillary permeability.

Human apolipoprotein (apo) B mediates the formation of neutral lipid-containing lipoproteins in the liver and intestine. The association of apoB with lipid is thought to be promoted by the microsomal triglyceride transfer protein complex. We have reconstituted lipoprotein assembly in an insect cell line that normally does not support this process.
