What role does color play in the neural representation of complex shapes? We approached the question by measuring color responses of face-selective neurons, using fMRI-guided microelectrode recording of the middle and anterior face patches of inferior temporal cortex (IT) in rhesus macaques. Face-selective cells responded weakly to pure color (equiluminant) photographs of faces. But many of the cells nonetheless showed a bias for warm colors when assessed using images that preserved the luminance contrast relationships of the original photographs.

Background: Postoperative delirium and postoperative cognitive dysfunction share risk factors and may co-occur, but their relationship is not well established. The primary goals of this study were to describe the prevalence of postoperative cognitive dysfunction and to investigate its association with in-hospital delirium. The authors hypothesized that delirium would be a significant risk factor for postoperative cognitive dysfunction during follow-up.

Excess tissue often exists distal to the upper second molar, creating a pocket in the maxillary tuberosity. When removed from this location, this tissue can serve as an optimal piece of connective tissue (CT), helping to both prevent periodontal disease and treat periodontal recession while also aiding in restorative dentistry. This tissue is an ideal CT for root coverage and soft-tissue ridge-augmentation grafting.

Cross-linked bearings have been developed for use in total knee arthroplasty that exhibit improved wear properties, but at the expense of a decrease in mechanical strength of the cross-linked material. Adoption has been slow due to fears of mechanical failure secondary to this alteration in mechanical properties. This prospective, randomized study compared mid-term survivorship, clinical and radiographic results of a conventional polyethylene (GVF) to a cross-linked polyethylene (XLK) in total knee prostheses of the same design.

Bone tissue and geometry are constantly modified through modeling and remodeling at the periosteal, endosteal and intracortical envelopes. Results from several studies indicate that femoral bone geometry is a predictor of whole bone strength (e.g.

Stem-cement and cement-bone interfacial failures as well as cement fractures have been noted in cemented total hip arthroplasty (THA) as the cause of aseptic loosening. Attempts to reduce the risk of femoral component loosening include improving the stem-cement interface by various coatings, using a textured or porous coated stem surfaces or by using a tapered stem having a highly-polished surface. The latter approach, often referred to as "force-closed" femoral stem design, would theoretically result in stem stabilization subsequent to debonding and 'taper-lock'.

Background: Implant-related impingement has been reported following metal-on-metal hip resurfacing, and reactive osseous patterns associated with implant-bone impingement have been identified. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and clinical implications of radiographic signs of femoral neck-acetabular cup impingement following metal-on-metal hip resurfacing.

Methods: Serial anteroposterior and lateral radiographs made five to 12.

This study reports minimum 5-year results of 95 hips implanted with a Pinnacle (DePuy, Warsaw, Ind) modular metal-on-metal acetabular prosthesis. Clinical scores such as the Harris Hip and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index revealed excellent clinical outcomes at mean 6-year follow-up. With the use of large-diameter femoral heads, dislocation was rare, occurring in only 1 hip.

Our goal was to determine the 7-year survivorship of a total knee arthroplasty system with all-polyethylene tibial components. From June 1996 to December 1997, 129 consecutive patients (177 knees) (>/=70 years old) underwent such primary arthroplasty at 2 centers in the United States. The 88 patients (120 knees) with 7 years or more of follow-up were evaluated radiographically and functionally.

We prospectively studied 207 consecutive patients (284 knees) undergoing total knee arthroplasty (June 1996 to December 1997) with a cemented tricompartmental Sigma PFC (DePuy Orthopaedics, Warsaw, Ind) total knee arthroplasty via a standard procedure (median follow-up, 87 months). Cruciate-retaining (272 knees, 96%) and cruciate-substituting (12, 4%) implants were used. There was one revision secondary to a ligament disruption after a fall.

Unlabelled: We compared the incidence of wear-related failures between two large cohorts of patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty implanted with identical modular tibial trays and polyethylene inserts sterilized by different methods. A total of 1183 second-generation press-fit condylar prostheses having inserts packaged and sterilized in an oxygen-free environment were assessed at a minimum 5-year followup (mean, 7.0 years).

Background: Following the reintroduction of metal-on-metal articulating surfaces for total hip arthroplasty in Europe in 1988, we developed a surface arthroplasty prosthetic system using a metal-on-metal articulation. The present study describes the clinical and radiographic results of the first 400 hips treated with metal-on-metal hybrid surface arthroplasties at an average follow-up of three and a half years.

Methods: Between November 1996 and November 2000, 400 metal-on-metal hybrid surface arthroplasties were performed in 355 patients.

Cementless total hip femoral components rely on press-fit for initial stability and bone healing and remodeling for secondary fixation. However, the determinants of satisfactory press-fit are not well understood. In previous studies, human cortical bone loaded circumferentially to simulate press-fit exhibited viscoelastic, or time dependent, behavior.

Many cementless implant designs rely upon a diaphyseal press-fit in conjunction with a porous coated implant surface to achieve primary or short term fixation, thereby constraining interface micromotion to such a level that bone ingrowth and consequent secondary or long-term fixation, i.e., osseointegration, can occur.

Long-term survival of the acetabular component in revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) is determined by initial implant stability and bone ingrowth. Highly porous Trabecular Metal (TM, Zimmer, Inc, Warsaw, Ind) facilitates ingrowth and may be an ideal material for revision THA. The outcome and survivorship of a TM, nonmodular, uncemented acetabular cup were assessed in 60 consecutive patients undergoing revision THA (mean follow-up, 42 months; range, 14-68 months).

This article presents an empirical test of organizational identification in the context of customer-company (C-C) relationships. It investigates whether customers identify with companies and what the antecedents and consequences of such identification are. The model posits that perceived company characteristics, construed external image, and the perception of the company's boundary-spanning agent lead to C-C identification.

Short and long duration tests were conducted on hollow femoral bone cylinders to study the circumferential (hoop) creep response of cortical bone subjected to an intramedullary radial load. It was hypothesized that there is a stress threshold above which nonlinear creep effects dominate the mechanical response and below which the response is primarily determined by linear viscoelastic material properties. The results indicate that a hoop stress threshold exists for cortical bone, where creep strain, creep strain rate and residual strain exhibited linear behavior at low hoop stress and nonlinear behavior above the hoop stress threshold.
