The acute hemodynamic and humoral responses to intravenous dilevalol (10 to 390 mg) were evaluated in 10 patients with moderate hypertension. Dilevalol, in doses of 30 mg or more, decreased arterial pressure (p less than 0.0001) through a decrease in total peripheral resistance (p less than 0.

Increased amounts of urodiolenone, an isomer of a phytoalexin, were found in the urine of 34% of patients with essential hypertension. Urodiolenone was also excreted in 70% of patients with neurocirculatory asthenia (hyperkinetic syndrome) and labile hypertension; very small quantities were found in normal subjects. When grapefruit juice, which is rich in urodiolenone, was offered to hypertensive subjects, urodiolenone excretion was much higher than the amount ingested, indicating that output was not due to precursors present in the diet.

Marginal leakage is a cause of failure of composite resin restorations. The effect of two enamel and two dentin bonding agents on marginal leakage alongside composite resins was assessed and compared in enamel and dentinal cavities. Cavities, one in buccal enamel and the other in cervical dentin, were prepared in each of 350 extracted sound human premolar teeth and randomly assigned to combinations of bonding agents and composite resins.

Vervet monkey attached gingiva and alveolar mucosa was used to investigate the effect of primary fixative composition and osmolarity on the scanning electron microscope appearance and epithelial cell surface feature density. Primary fixation was obtained using 12 different fixatives with osmolarities varying between 320-2010mOsm followed by further standard SEM processing procedures. All primary fixatives investigated produced acceptably fixed oral epithelium for SEM study, showing all the morphologic features characteristic of either keratinized or non-keratinized oral tissue.

The dental treatment needs of many elderly people involve root surface caries and class V restorations. A scanning electron microscopic examination of extracted teeth with class V cavity preparations showed that well-developed cementum margins could be produced. Most studies regard the dentinocemental junction as behaving as dentin in relation to the restorative sealing process and possible marginal leakage.

Blood pressure was examined in 483 Ethiopian immigrants a few weeks after their arrival in Israel. The results were compared with those from a group of 171 Ethiopian immigrants who came to Israel 2-3 years earlier. Mean blood pressure was significantly higher in the veteran immigrants, whose weight was also greater.

A method to calibrate examiners for field studies of dental caries was investigated. A total of 200 carious teeth were mounted in 40 plaster blocks so that 920 surfaces were available for examination with a curved probe, using WHO criteria. The results of two examinations of the teeth 1 week apart by 3 experienced and 4 new examiners and 1 year apart by two experienced examiners were compared.

The systemic and regional hemodynamic effects of endothelin (ET), a novel endothelial derived vasoconstrictor peptide were studied in Wistar Kyoto rats. A bolus of 1 nmol/Kg ET intravenously induced a transient 43% decrease in blood pressure associated with a 57% decrease in systemic resistance and a 30% increase in cardiac output (p less than 0.01 for all parameters).

Betaine belongs to the trimethylamine class of osmolytes (osmotically active substances believed to play an important role in cell volume homeostasis) and has recently been identified in the inner medulla of the mammalian kidney. Trimethylamines accumulate in the renal inner medulla during hypertonic stress, and betaine content in the inner medulla has been shown recently to increase during hypernatremia, yet the mechanisms governing the modulation of trimethylamine content and, in particular, of betaine content are not well understood. In this study, we demonstrate the presence of choline dehydrogenase activity in the renal inner medullas of three separate rat strains.

The concentrations of individual PCB's were determined in both serum and adipose tissue lipid from 35 transformer repair workers currently exposed to PCBs, mainly Aroclor 1260, 17 previous transformer repair workers, and 56 comparison workers never occupationally exposed to PCBs. The analysis used fused-silica capillary gas chromatography with electron capture detector (FSCGC/ECD) and FSCGC with negative ion chemical ionization mass spectrometry to verify PCB congener levels. Eighty-nine PCB peaks were identified and confirmed.

The hemodynamic effects of 3 months of nitrendipine therapy were evaluated in 14 patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension. Nitrendipine reduced systolic and diastolic pressures from 145 +/- 4/95 +/- 3 to 119 +/- 3/78 +/- 2 mm Hg, respectively, (p less than 0.001) through a fall in total peripheral resistance index (46 +/- 4 to 34 +/- 3 units/m2, p less than 0.

Although the risk of developing congestive heart failure increases in parallel with the degree of obesity, load-dependent indexes of left ventricular function are found to be reduced in patients with morbid obesity only. We used the ratio of end-systolic wall stress to end-systolic volume index, which is load-independent, to assess myocardial contractility in 23 nonobese, 28 mildly obese and 26 moderately obese patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension. Although load-dependent indexes (i.

In order that the growth pattern and histologic and ultrastructural differentiation of the central giant cell granuloma of the jaws be studied, tissue from three lesions was transplanted into nude mice. Xenografts were harvested at 3 weeks, 5 weeks, 8 weeks, and 13 weeks and examined histologically and ultrastructurally. Implants could be identified as firm subcutaneous nodules, but after 3 weeks began regressing.

The absence of long-term effect of calcium channel blockers in primary aldosteronism due to adrenal adenoma is described in two patients. Calcium entry channel blockers, which were claimed to be a new medical therapy for primary aldosteronism, neither prevented the increase of plasma aldosterone nor decreased potassium levels over time in these patients. The drugs did not even lower blood pressure in one patient.

This study investigates the effect of variations in mineralocorticoid as well as cell sodium delivery and uptake on Na-K-ATPase activity in the mouse medullary thick ascending limb of Henle (mTALH). Pharmacologic doses of the mineralocorticoid deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA) resulted in a 28% increase of Na-K-ATPase activity. Furosemide-induced inhibition of sodium uptake by the mTALH cell also resulted in Na-K-ATPase activity reduction (45%).
