Severe asymptomatic hypertension (SAH) is a common cause of emergency department (ED) visits. Despite recommendations against using short-acting blood pressure (BP)-lowering drugs in the ED, it is still a common practice. The authors characterized BP response in the ED utilizing 24-hour ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM).

Heart failure (HF) patients have frequent exacerbations leading to high consumption of medical services and recurrent hospitalizations.Different precipitating factors have various effects on long-term survival. We investigated 2212 patients hospitalized with a diagnosis of either acute HF or acute exacerbation of chronic HF.

Although it has been on the decline, the incidence of HE has recently increased in a few countries. The aim of the present retrospective study was to evaluate the incidence, aetiology and 1-year mortality of HE in a large medical centre over a 20-year period (1991-2010).

This study assessed the acceptability and preferences for a tailored text message intervention in support of core office-based buprenorphine treatment medical management components (e.g.

Aim: To identify risk factors that may explain the predisposition to site specific thrombosis.
Background: On October 2012, Hurricane Sandy struck New York City, resulting in unprecedented damages, including the temporary closure of Bellevue Hospital Center and its primary care office-based buprenorphine program.
Objectives: At 6 months, we assessed factors associated with higher rates of substance use in buprenorphine program participants that completed a baseline survey one month post-Sandy (i.e.
Introduction: Heart failure is a major cause of death and disability and poses a significant public health concern. Approximately half of the patients admitted with heart failure, have preserved left ventricular ejection fraction. The association between systolic blood pressure (SBP) and long-term outcome in this group has not been well established.

They are currently the standard choice for both substrates for flexible electronics and space shielding, as they render high temperature and UV stability and toughness. However, their poor thermal conductivity and completely electrically insulating characteristics have caused other limitations, such as thermal management challenges for flexible high-power electronics and spacecraft electrostatic charging.

We hypothesized that melatonin may generate a protective effect in a high salt diet (HSD) rodent model mediated by decreasing renal oxidative stress. Dahl salt-sensitive rats were divided into three groups according to diet: normal chow (control); HSD; HSD with melatonin [30/mg/kg/day]) placed in their water (HSD + Mel) over an 8-wk period.

Results of 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) including average blood pressure, variability, and nocturnal dipping are considered the gold standard for diagnosis and the best predictor of the future end organ damage in chronic hypertension. Here we report on the reproducibility of ABPM results for these three measures over a period of months. A total of 35 hypertensive patients (43% female, mean age 64 years), underwent two separate ABPM recordings within 14 weeks, with unchanged medical treatment and lifestyle in the interim.

Herein, we assessed, by 24H BPM, the impact of the change in SBP levels during the first week of stroke on short-term functional status and long-term mortality in elderly patients.
Methods: One hundred and fifty acute stroke patients (69 males), mean age at admission 83.

Most patients with hypertension have essential hypertension or well-known forms of secondary hypertension, such as renal disease, renal artery stenosis, or common endocrine diseases (hyperaldosteronism or pheochromocytoma). Physicians are less aware of drug induced hypertension. A variety of therapeutic agents or chemical substances may increase blood pressure.

The agent is associated with a lower risk of bleeding compared with vitamin K antagonists such as warfarin. Hemopericardium is a life-threatening bleeding event that is rarely caused by anticoagulants.

Platelets taken from vasculopathic diabetic patients, show enhanced stimuli-induced activation and aggregation responses. Aspirin remains the cornerstone antiplatelet agent for secondary prevention of vascular complications among diabetic patients, yet evidence of its efficacy and safety in primary prevention are conflicting.

Although conventional imaging has been unable to identify damage capable of explaining its organic origin or discerning patients at risk of developing long-term or permanently disabling neurological impairment, most disease models assume that diffuse axonal injury in white matter must be present but is difficult to resolve. The few histopathological investigations conducted, however, show only limited evidence of such damage, which cannot account for the stereotypical globalized nature of symptoms generally reported in patients.

Inter-arm blood pressure difference (IAD) has been found to be associated with cardiovascular mortality. Its clinical significance and association with mortality in the elderly is not well defined. This study evaluated the association of IAD with mortality in a cohort of hospitalized elderly individuals.

Here we derive these parameters from diffusion kurtosis imaging to examine their relationship to concentrations of global WM N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA), creatine (Cr), choline (Cho) and myo-Inositol (mI), as measured with proton MR spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS), in a cohort of 25 patients with mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). We found statistically significant (p<0.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the leading cause of cancer-related death for men and women in the United States. NSCLC causes a variety of symptoms which result in significant distress and reduced quality of life for patients. Behavioral and other non-pharmacologic treatment interventions for NSCLC have resulted in improved quality of life, reduced emotional distress, and improved longevity.

We prepared PI-based nanocomposite films that show both AO durability and ESD protection by incorporating polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and carbon nanotube (CNT) additives. The unique methods that are reported prevent CNT agglomeration and degradation of the CNT properties that are common in dispersion-based processes.
