SCL and LMO1 were both discovered by virtue of their activation by chromosomaltranslocation in patients with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). A series of selected bicyclic carbamates in which the range of accessible angles and distances between the carbonyl group and the proton removed in an alpha-lithiation reaction are structurally defined have been investigated. Oxazolidinones 7-10 undergo stereoselective lithiation-substitution reactions to provide cis-18-27 and cis-31-35 as the major diastereomers. Two series of competition experiments show that the conformationally restricted carbamates 7, 10, 11, and 15 undergo lithiation via complexes more efficiently than Boc amines 4-6.

Turnover of carnitine in the body is primarily the result of renal excretion, and high-fat (HF) diets have been shown to increase urine carnitine excretion in healthy people. Recently, increased renal excretion of carnitine was observed in dogs diagnosed with cystinuria and carnitine deficiency. Carnitine deficiency has been linked to dilated cardiomyopathy and lipid storage myopathies in dogs and humans, and low-fat (LF) diets have been beneficial in some human patients with carnitine deficiency.

-We have used comparative sequence analysis to evaluate a putative silencer element that has been proposed to be involved in the differential tissue-expression of the murine renin genes: Ren-1 and Ren-2. In the mouse, these genes share a similar pattern of tissue-specific renin expression. One significant difference is seen in the submandibular gland (SMG) where renin expression from the Ren-2 locus is 100-fold greater than the expression from the Ren-1 locus.

The usefulness of the MMPI (Hathaway & McKinley, 1951 ) and MMPI-2 (Butcher, Dahlstrom, Graham, Tellegen, & Kaemmer, 1989) for diagnosing and assessing symptomatic depression has been the subject of considerable debate for a number of years. In this article, we review the relative contributions of the MMPI and MMPI-2 clinical and content scales in predicting depression. Positive predictive power, negative predictive power, and overall classification rate were computed for Scale 2 (D) of the MMPI and MMPI-2 and the Depression content scale (DEP) of the MMPI-2.

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of different agricultural treatments and plant communities on the diversity of ammonia oxidizer populations in soil. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), coupled with specific oligonucleotide probing, was used to analyze 16S rRNA genes of ammonia oxidizers belonging to the beta subgroup of the division Proteobacteria by use of DNA extracted from cultivated, successional, and native deciduous forest soils. Community profiles of the different soil types were compared with nitrification rates and most-probable-number (MPN) counts.

Previous studies demonstrate that the mouse renin gene is regulated by a complex enhancer of transcription located 2.6 kilobases upstream of the transcription start site which is under both positive and negative influence. We demonstrate herein that a positive regulatory element (Eb) is repeated 10 bp upstream (Ec), and both are required for baseline activity of the enhancer.

The relationship between plant diversity and productivity has received much attention in ecology, but the relationship of these factors to soil microbial communities has been little explored. The carbon resources that support soil microbial communities are primarily derived from plants, so it is likely that the soil microbial community should respond to changes in plant diversity or productivity, particularly if the plant community affects the quality or quantity of available carbon. We investigated the relationship of plant diversity and productivity to the composition of the soil microbial community along a topographic gradient in a mid-successional old-field in southwestern Michigan.
