Large degrees of mandibular autorotation during intermediate splint design are prone to transfer error and decrease accuracy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the amount of mandibular autorotation necessary to design intermediate splints for maxilla- and mandible-first sequences using virtual planning software, to help the clinical decision-making regarding the most adequate sequence for each patient. The influence of specific orthognathic movements (different vertical and sagittal changes at the Le Fort I level, cant correction) and the type of maxillofacial deformity (skeletal Class II, III, anterior open bite) were evaluated to identify those that would require higher levels of autorotation for each sequence.

Reconstructive surgery with a free vascularised tissue flap is indicated in large defects in the head and neck region, which arise mostly because of head and neck cancer. Tobacco smoking is a major risk factor for head and neck cancer, and many patients undergoing reconstructive surgery in the head and neck have a history of smoking. The objective of this meta-analysis was to determine the impact of smoking on surgical complications after head and neck reconstructive surgery with a free vascularised tissue flap.

Initially developed for the construction of DNA chips, the polypyrrole approach has been extended to other biochemical compounds (mainly proteins and oligosaccharides). This method allows one to copolymerize a pyrrole monomer with a biomolecule bearing a pyrrole group; this reaction is based on an electrochemical process allowing a very fast coupling of the biomolecule (probe) to a gold layer used as a working electrode. Fluorescence-based detection processes are classically used for evidence biorecognition on biochips; in order to avoid the labeling of the targets, we propose an alternative method--surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi).

Protein microarray is a promising technology that should combine rapidity and easy use with high throughput and versatility. This article describes a method in which an electrocopolymerization process is employed to graft biological molecules on to a chip so that surface plasmon resonance imaging may be used to detect molecular interactions. Copolymerization of pyrrole-modified protein and pyrrole is an efficient grafting process which immobilizes molecules at defined positions on a gold surface.

Biotinylated bacteria were immobilized onto biotin/avidin modified electrode surfaces. Firstly, an electrospotting deposition method, followed by fluorescence microscopy, showed that bacteria were specifically grafted onto a gold surface. Fluorescence intensity versus the quantity of bacteria deposited on the surface was correlated, allowing determination of the microbial saturation point.

A group of 8 pupils born in 1962 and a group of 8 future teachers between 25 and 40 years of age, were submitted in 1975 to two types of tests in the presence of environment noises at various levels (45 to 75 dBa), in order to assess the influence of this nuisance on the pedagogic efficiency. The results show a nocivity threshold for the pupils at around 55 dBA and for the teachers at aroung 65 dBA. Furthermore, backward pupils suffer more in this context from the interference of noise than the advanced ones.
