The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychometric properties of a Dutch translation of the Multidimensional Pain Inventory, MPI-DLV. Data was available on 733 chronic pain patients. There were three issues of special interest.

The present study investigates the relationship between scale scores on the Dutch version of the Multidimensional Pain Inventory (MPI-DLV) and data derived from comparable items from an experience sampling procedure. Fifty-seven chronic pain patients participated in the study, which lasted 6 consecutive days. Special attention was given to the relationship between the MPI-DLV pain intensity score and the mean experience sampling pain intensity score.

Two experiments were carried out to study operant conditioning of pain report. Further, it was investigated whether pain-related psychophysiological and psychological measures (skin conductance response and magnitude matching) could also be conditioned operantly. In both experiments subjects received 12 painful electric shocks of equal intensity.

This article describes an investigation into whether there are differences among the four pain patient clusters from the Multidimensional Pain Inventory-Dutch Language Version (MPI-DLV) in terms of prescribed analgesic medication, level of intelligence, and other personality characteristics (MMPI). Dysfunctional patients were distinguished by a higher level of analgesic medication intake. Patients classified as Average were marked by a marginally significant higher level of intelligence.

Based upon the definition of pain by the International Association for the Study of Pain, the concept of pain has been differentiated into nociception, sensation, experience and behaviour (Loeser's model). The physiology of the modulation of pain is represented by the theory of Melzack & Wall. Some specific childhood problems in the experience and the assessment of pain are discussed.

This article describes the development of the Checklist for Interpersonal Pain Behavior (CHIP), an observation scale which assesses overt pain behavior. The study is an extension of an earlier study in which the dimensions and components of observed chronic pain behavior were examined. A broad definition of pain behavior is chosen (interpersonal pain behavior), namely the interaction between the pain patient and his/her direct environment.

The three-systems model of chronic pain emphasizes the partially independent relationship among physiological, gross motor and verbal-cognitive responses of chronic pain patients. This study describes the development of an assessment instrument representing a measure for the verbal-cognitive response system of chronic pain. Fifty items, each of which is assigned to one of five factors (pain impact, catastrophizing, outcome efficacy, acquiescence and reliance on health care) constitute the new Pain Cognition List (PCL).

This study reports on the effectiveness of an individualized shaping treatment program for sitting and standing intolerance in a patient with chronic low back pain following a laminectomy for removal of an intradural tumor. Functional assessment of sitting and standing tolerance, observation of pain behaviors, and a self-report measure regarding the pain experience were carried out during baseline, treatment, posttreatment, and at a 6-month follow-up. By the end of the 6-week inpatient treatment, the patient was able to stand still for 25 min and to sit for 15 min.

The use of an education program for patients with chronic low back pain (Back School) has been investigated. The effect evaluation is based on a pretest-post-test-control group design, including a follow-up after 8 weeks. The Maastricht Back School is based on the theory that pain is also maintained by emotional, cognitive and environmental factors.

It is argued that the personality of the cosmetic surgical patient is undisturbed. Furthermore it is argued that a vast majority of these patients are very pleased with the results of the cosmetic correction. A very small percentage however is dissatisfied (although no surgical-technical mistake was made) and is urging again and again for a repetition of the procedure.
