Older People's Lived Perspectives of Social Isolation during the First Wave of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Italy.

The aim of the present study is to understand the experiences of isolation and strategies used to cope with it among older people living at home during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. More specifically, the roles of media and online technologies were also explored. Semistructured interviews were conducted via telephone between March and April 2020 with 30 people aged 72-94 years old living in Northern Italy.

Automatic identification of physical activity types and sedentary behaviors from triaxial accelerometer: laboratory-based calibrations are not enough.

"Objective" methods to monitor physical activity and sedentary patterns in free-living conditions are necessary to further our understanding of their impacts on health. In recent years, many software solutions capable of automatically identifying activity types from portable accelerometry data have been developed, with promising results in controlled conditions, but virtually no reports on field tests. An automatic classification algorithm initially developed using laboratory-acquired data (59 subjects engaging in a set of 24 standardized activities) to discriminate between 8 activity classes (lying, slouching, sitting, standing, walking, running, and cycling) was applied to data collected in the field.

Adult intussusception of appendicular mucinous cystoadenoma.

Intussusception is a rare cause of adult intestinal obstruction. Clinical manifestations are not specific, which makes a preoperative diagnosis difficult to establish and often causes delay. We report a case of acute intestinal obstruction due to ileocolic intussusception.

Home treatment of uncomplicated acute diverticulitis.

Diverticular disease of the colon is a common disease, mainly in the population over 50 years of age. In acute forms of presentation, we considered home treatment in those patients that were classified as having uncomplicated forms by means of clinical presentation and a computed tomography of the abdomen. According to these criteria, we treated 38 patients at home and admitted 18 patients to the hospital during the same period of time.

Double cervical cyst derived from a single thyroglossal duct tract.

Thyroglossal duct cysts are one of the most common congenital cervical pathologic findings in children. This type of cyst can be located anywhere between the base of the tongue and the sternal manubrium. We report the case of a patient with a double thyroglossal cyst, one located in the hyoid region and the other in the thyroid gland.

Role of nitric oxide in the early renal changes induced by high fructose diet in rats.

Background: Early glomerular hypertrophy and late glomerulosclerosis have been observed in rats fed high fructose diet (HFD), comparable with those of diabetic rats. Several studies suggest a role for nitric oxide (NO) in the pathogenesis of renal damage in diabetes. This study investigated the possible role of NO in the pathogenesis of HFD-induced glomerular changes.

[Ornidazole in the treatment of liver dysfunction associated to long-term parenteral nutrition].

Influence of somatostatin in the evolution of acute pancreatitis. A prospective randomized study.

A prospective, controlled, and randomized clinical study was carried out with the purpose of evaluating the influence of somatostatin in the evolution of acute pancreatitis. One hundred patients were randomly divided into two groups, a control group (n = 50 patients) and a somatostatin group (n = 50 patients to whom a dosage of 250 micrograms/h was administered for 48 h following a bolus of 250 micrograms at the beginning of therapy). The two groups were homogeneous in age, sex, etiology, and severity of clinical picture (on admission).
