In this work, we present an analysis of the antibacterial activity of TiS nanostructures in water and 0.9% NaCl solution suspensions. TiS nanoribbons 1-10 µm long, 100-300 nm wide, and less than 100 nm thick were produced by the direct reaction of pure titanium powder with elemental sulphur in a quartz tube sealed under vacuum.

Objective: The nonresolving character of synovial inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a conundrum. To identify the contribution of fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) to the perpetuation of synovitis, we investigated the molecular mechanisms that govern the tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα)-driven inflammatory program in human FLS.

Methods: FLS obtained from the synovial tissues of patients with RA or osteoarthritis were stimulated with TNFα and assayed for gene expression and cytokine production by real-time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Objective: Type I interferons (IFNs) have emerged as potential activators of the IFN signature and elevated STAT-1 expression in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) synovium, but mechanisms that induce synovial IFN expression are unknown. Recently, tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) was shown to induce a delayed IFN response in macrophages. We undertook this study to test whether TNFα, classically thought to activate inflammatory NF-κB target genes in RA, also contributes to the "IFN signature" in RA synovial macrophages.

Background And Objectives: Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations, inherited and somatically acquired, are common in clinical prostate cancer. We have developed model systems designed to study specific mtDNA mutations in controlled experiments. Because prostate cancer frequently metastasizes to bone we tested the hypothesis that mtDNA mutations enhance prostate cancer growth and survival in the bone microenvironment.

The objective of this work was investigation of possibility of tunable diode laser spectroscopy (TDLS) technique application for gaseous uranium hexafluoride (UF6) isotope measurement. In 120 patients with atherosclerosis, complicated in 43 patients by a haemorrhagic, in 47 patients by an ischaemic, and in 30 patients by a transient cerebral insult, phase analysis of platelet aggregation was performed by the turbidimetric method according to Born with graphic recording according to O'Brien. An increase in the platelet activity was found in ischaemic insult, manifesting itself by the occurrence of spontaneous aggregationin 60% of the cases, an acceleration of ADP-induced aggregation, and the second aggregation phase in all patients examined. A direct correlation was revealed between the secondary aggregation and the intensity of spontaneous and of ADP-induced aggregation, and the possibility of a transformation of the spontaneous into the secondary aggregation of platelets was demonstrated.
