Efficacy of adductor canal block protocol implementation in a multimodal pain management protocol for total knee arthroplasty.

Objective: Postoperative pain relief for total knee arthroplasty is an important concern for clinicians who seek to decrease pain, side effects associated with narcotics, increase mobility, and decrease hospital length of stay for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patients. In today's day in age where patients and clinicians are looking to decrease length of stay and desire to take total knee replacement to the ambulatory surgery setting, appropriate and safe analgesia is paramount. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the analgesic efficacy of implementing a single shot adductor canal block (ACB) protocol in patients undergoing primary TKA by a single surgeon already using a multimodal analgesia protocol at a high volume community hospital.

Study protocol for Goodform - a classroom-based intervention to enhance body image and prevent doping and supplement use in adolescent boys.

Background: Very few programs aimed at improving body image among adolescent boys have been effective, and there is still no clear evidence as to what will work for universal prevention of eating disorders and body dissatisfaction with this group. We combined two previously efficacious programs and used a design thinking framework to optimise program content alongside potential end-users including adolescent boys, teachers, parents, and experts. Goodform is a four-session universal program that aims to reduce body dissatisfaction and prevent the use of muscle-building supplements among 14-to-16 year old adolescent boys.

Sialolithiasis with abscess: An uncommon presentation of a Ludwig's angina mimic.

Sialolithiasis represents the most common issue of the salivary gland, ranging from asymptomatic to airway compromising. In rapidly progressing, completely obstructive salivary stones, the presentation can mimic emergent oropharyngeal diseases, primarily Ludwig's angina. We present a case of a large and obstructive sialolith with abscess whose initial presentation was concerning for Ludwig's angina with impending airway compromise.

Background: There is an association between intraoperative and postoperative femoral fractures and the direct anterior approach (DAA) to total hip arthroplasty (THA). The purpose of our study is to identify risk factors for Vancouver B fractures and to establish a predictable timeline for when these occur.

Methods: We retrospectively identified patients with Vancouver B periprosthetic femoral fractures (n = 49) after 11,509 elective primary cementless THA procedures through the DAA between 2012 and 2018 at a single institution.

To incentivize private primary care utilization and reduce reliance on public healthcare services, Elderly Healthcare Voucher Scheme has been implemented to provide a voucher entitlement to entire older resident population for subsidising their purchase of unspecified primary healthcare services in the private sector. Our study assessed whether voucher usage is associated with reduced utilization of public healthcare services. We retrieved the public healthcare services utilization and voucher transaction data of a survey cohort of 551 participants, who were age eligible for the scheme since 2009, over the period 2009-2015.

Long-Term Quality of Life Outcomes in Adult Survivors After Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Drainage Repair.

Background: We sought to determine the long-term quality of life after repair of anomalous pulmonary venous drainage using the Short Form (SF)-36 questionnaire in adult survivors.

Methods: All patients who underwent repair of partial or total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage (PAPVD or TAPVD) and were 18 years of age or older with a current contact number were identified from the hospital database. The mean age of the 101 patients was 26 ± 7 years (range, 18-49) old.

Community norms for the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire among cisgender gay men.

Objective: Prior norms of the Eating Disorders Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) among men have not considered sexual orientation. This study's objective was to assess EDE-Q community norms among cisgender gay men.

Method: Participants were 978 self-identified cisgender gay men from The PRIDE Study recruited in 2018.

Athleisure: A qualitative investigation of a multi-billion-dollar clothing trend.

Clothes play a ubiquitous, yet under-appreciated social role. In the context of body image, clothes may both reflect and facilitate wearers' ideals and anxieties about their physical appearance. Athleisure, referring to athletic-inspired workout apparel that explicitly accentuates wearers' physiques, is a hitherto unexamined clothing trend worth tens of billions of dollars annually (and growing) in the United States consumer market alone.

What is the long term impact of voucher scheme on primary care? Findings from a repeated cross sectional study using propensity score matching.

Background: Vouchers are increasingly used as a demand-side subsidy to reduce financial hardship and improve quality of services. Elderly Healthcare Voucher Scheme has been introduced by the Hong Kong Government since 2009 to provide subsidy to elderly aged 65 and above to visit ten different types of private primary care providers for curative, preventive and chronic disease management. Several enhancements have been made over the past few years.

Problems with sleep are reported to be common after stroke but the incidence and prevalence of insomnia and insomnia symptoms following stroke is not yet established. The aim of this review was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the incidence and prevalence of insomnia and insomnia symptoms in individuals affected by stroke. We searched seven main electronic databases to identify studies until September 25, 2018.

Impact of Resident Training Level on Radiation Exposure During Fixation of Proximal Femur Fractures.

Background There are limited data about cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) in adult congenital heart disease. We aimed to assess early and late outcomes of CRT among patients with adult congenital heart disease. Methods and Results We retrospectively studied 54 patients with adult congenital heart disease (median age, 46 years; range, 18-73 years; 74% men) who received CRT implantation (biventricular paced >90%) between 2004 and 2017.

A robust strategy for proteomic identification of biomarkers of invasive phenotype complexed with extracellular heat shock proteins.

As an extension of their orchestration of intracellular pathways, secretion of extracellular heat shock proteins (HSPs) is an emerging paradigm of homeostasis imperative to multicellular organization. Extracellular HSP is axiomatic to the survival of cells during tumorigenesis; proportional representation of specific HSP family members is indicative of invasive potential and prognosis. Further significance has been added by the knowledge that all cancer-derived exosomes have surface-exposed HSPs that reflect the membrane topology of cells that secrete them.

Registration, reporting, and replication in clinical trials: The case of anorexia nervosa.

Objective: Treatment outcomes for anorexia nervosa (AN) remain modest, and recent research suggests that clinical trials may be of limited methodological quality. With increasing evidence illustrating the irreproducibility of psychological research, no research to date has systematically examined the cumulative effect of bias in research relating to the treatment of AN.

Method: We identified all AN trials listed on ClinicalTrials.

Negative psychological correlates of the pursuit of muscularity among women.

Objective: There is increasing public and scientific focus on women's pursuit of a muscular and toned appearance. However, the psychological correlates of women's drive for muscularity are currently unclear. Therefore, we examined the associations of drive for muscularity with four important negative psychological indices among women: eating disorder (ED) symptoms, and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress.

Introduction to a special issue on eating disorders and related symptomatology in male populations.

Objective: It is our sincere pleasure to introduce a special issue of the International Journal of Eating Disorders focused on eating disorders and related symptoms in male populations.

Method: Contributions focused on three main themes among male populations: (a) the nature of eating disorder symptoms and recovery; (b) long-term outcomes following eating disorders treatment; and (c) muscularity-oriented symptoms of eating pathology.

Results: The contributions to this special issue highlight the importance of better understanding how eating disorder symptoms manifest, may be maintained, and respond to treatment among male populations.

Does masculinity moderate the relationship of height with height dissatisfaction? Findings from an Internet forum for short statured men.

Research suggests that height is fundamental to Western conceptualisations of masculinity. However, researchers are yet to examine whether individual differences in conformity to Western masculine norms can help to explain why men experience height dissatisfaction. Thus, we investigated conformity to Western masculine norms as a moderator of the relationship between men's height and height dissatisfaction.

The role of haptoglobin and hemopexin in the prevention of delayed cerebral ischaemia after aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage: a review of current literature.

Delayed cerebral ischaemia (DCI) after aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH) is a major cause of mortality and morbidity. The pathophysiology of DCI after aSAH is thought to involve toxic mediators released from lysis of red blood cells within the subarachnoid space, including free haemoglobin and haem. Haptoglobin and hemopexin are endogenously produced acute phase proteins that are involved in the clearance of these toxic mediators.
