Article Synopsis
  • Inguinal hernia repair is the most common surgery for infants, and this study aimed to assess a new anesthetic technique combining caudal block, high-flow nasal oxygen, and dexmedetomidine sedation instead of general anesthesia.
  • Conducted in Australia and New Zealand, the study involved 50 infants and found that the new technique successfully completed surgery in 82% of the cases without needing to switch to general anesthesia.
  • The approach resulted in few intraoperative and postoperative complications, suggesting it could be a safer alternative for this type of surgery in infants.

Peripheral venous cannulation (PVC) is a commonly performed invasive medical procedure. Topical treatments such as the eutectic mixture of local anaesthetics (EMLA®, Aspen Pharmacare Australia Pty Ltd, St Leonards, NSW) attenuate the associated pain, but are limited by requiring up to one hour of application before becoming effective. There is a recognition of the contribution to global warming from emissions of anaesthetic gases into the atmosphere. We audited sevoflurane use to help guide future initiatives to reduce consumption. We observed sevoflurane use during paediatric anaesthesia in a single operating theatre over eight weeks.

Background: Mortality is a basic measure for quality and safety in anesthesia. There are few anesthesia-related mortality data available for pediatric practice. Our objective for this study was to determine the incidence of 24-hour and 30-day mortality after anesthesia and to determine the incidence and nature of anesthesia-related mortality in pediatric practice at a large tertiary institution.

We present a case of a 39-year-old woman with a vulval lesion, which macroscopically looked consistent with a fungating squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva. However, further investigations demonstrated a less common cause for this presentation.

We have constructed a transcription map covering a 2 Mb region beginning approximately 1 Mb distal to HLA-F. Cosmids isolated from a chromsome 6 library were positioned by YAC hybridisation, STS and fingerprint analysis. Using direct cDNA selection, exon trapping, and direct genomic sequence analysis, we identified 42 potential exonic fragments in this region.

Paralogous regions are duplicated segments of chromosomal DNA that have been acquired during the evolution of the genome. Subsequent divergent evolution of the genes within paralogous regions can lead to the formation of gene families. Here, we report the identification of a region on Chromosome (Chr) 6 at 6p21.

The gene responsible for hereditary haemochromatosis (HH) has recently been identified. One mutation in this gene, termed HFE, has been found in all Australian HH patients. We previously identified a predominant HH ancestral haplotype covering 4.
