Objective: Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) in children can cause hypocalcaemia and rickets, but the prevalence of these complications and the 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) concentrations below which they arise is uncertain. We investigated this in children (< 18 years) with 25OHD measurements.

Turbidity is commonly monitored as an important water quality index. Human activities, such as dredging and dumping operations, can disrupt turbidity levels and should be monitored and analysed for possible effects. In this paper, we model the variations of turbidity in Dublin Bay over space and time to investigate the effects of dumping and dredging while controlling for the effect of wind speed as a common atmospheric effect.

Cataracts are the world's leading cause of blindness, and diabetes is the second leading risk factor for cataracts after old age. Despite this, no preventative treatment exists for cataracts. Application of stable isotopically labelled (SIL) molecules in Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry Imaging (MALDI-MSI) over a series of time points allows the temporal and spatial dynamics of biochemical reactions to be tracked in a biological system. However, these large kinetic MSI datasets and the inherent variability of biological replicates presents significant challenges to the rapid analysis of the data. Objectives: The aim of this study was to generate an objective method to describe MRI data to assess response in the vertebrae of patients with metastatic hormone sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC), treated with external beam radiation therapy and systemic therapy with Radium-223 and to correlate changes with clinical outcomes.

Methods: Three sets of whole-body MRI (WBMRI) images were utilized from 25 patients from the neo-adjuvant Androgen Deprivation Therapy pelvic Radiotherapy and RADium-223 (ADRRAD) clinical trial: MRI1 (up to 28 days before Radium-223), MRI2, and MRI3 (2 and 6 months post completion of Radium-223). When a research group has multiple retracted publications and/or research misconduct by a member is evident, there is a risk that its other publications are unreliable, so a comprehensive assessment of the group's publications is advisable. We analyzed the comprehensiveness of assessment of the integrity of 300 publications by a research group with numerous retractions and known research misconduct, for 292 of which we raised concerns to publishers and academic institutions between 3/2013 and 2/2020. By 4/2023, 91 (30%) publications had not been assessed by either publisher or academic institution.

Recently in the Journal, Amanda Williams described her experience of raising concerns about a group of trials with "untrustworthy data". We were inspired by the work of Williams and colleagues to examine these and other trials by the same research group. Similar to Williams, we found that the patterns of reported data differed from the patterns expected to arise from valid randomisation.

Over 20 years ago, together with seven illustrious colleagues, the author proposed that efforts to postpone the decline and debilitation of aging might most promisingly be pursued by tackling the various lifelong processes of accumulation of damage through a panel of interventions, rather than seeking a magic bullet that would retard them all. A decade later, this approach was embraced in a paper that rapidly became, and is still, by far the most highly cited publication in the biology of aging this century. Here I survey the progress that the field has made in relation to this philosophy and the challenges that remain.
