Research suggests that when healthcare providers lack cultural competence, minority groups, including the Deaf community, are adversely affected. Although most genetic counseling programs incorporate cultural competency training into their curricula, the extent and impact of Deaf awareness training is unknown. The purpose of this study is to assess Deaf awareness training of recent graduates and its impact on knowledge of deafness and Deaf culture, and attitudes toward deaf people.

The objective of this document is to provide recommendations for the genetic counseling of patients and families undergoing evaluation for neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) or who have received a diagnosis of NF1. These recommendations are the opinions of a multi-center working group of genetic counselors with expertise in the care of individuals with NF1. These recommendations are based on the committee's clinical experiences, a review of pertinent English language medical articles, and reports of expert committees.

Rib anomalies may occur in isolation, as well as in association with abnormalities of vertebral segmentation and multi-system malformations. Specific entities include the VACTERL and MURCS associations, spondylocostal dysostosis, and spondylothoracic dysostosis. The relative significance of rib anomalies in other lesser known syndromes and associations remains unclear.
