A male neutered dog of unknown age had recurrent urinary tract infection and caudal abdominal pain. Using sonography, large dilated tubular structure filled with echogenic fluid was seen extending from the left kidney to the level of the bladder neck. In an excretory urogram there was left hydronephrosis with a normal ureter.

Sample Population: Proximal portions of a femour from 24 dogs.
Procedure: The proximal portion of a femur was obtained from each dog.
Liver lobectomy for complete attenuation of intrahepatic portosystemic shunts appears to be a safe and effective surgical treatment. When the intrahepatic shunt vessel can be definitively palpated within a liver lobe or its presence confirmed portographically, liver lobectomy represents a technically simple and effective method of complete shunt attenuation. To maintain portal pressure at an acceptable value after lobectomy, an extrahepatic portocaval shunt vessel can be created by use of an external jugular vein graft.
