The precursor nature of papillary urothelial hyperplasia of the urinary bladder is uncertain. In this study, we investigated the telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) promoter and fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) mutations in 82 patients with papillary urothelial hyperplasia lesions. Thirty-eight patients presented with papillary urothelial hyperplasia and concurrent noninvasive papillary urothelial carcinoma, and 44 patients presented with de novo papillary urothelial hyperplasia.

Maspin repression is frequently observed in prostate cancer; however, the molecular mechanism(s) causing the loss is not completely understood. Here, we demonstrate that inhibition of class I histone deacetylases (HDACs) mediates re-expression of maspin which plays an essential role in suppressing proliferation and migration capability in prostate cancer cells. Local and metastatic relapses of prostate cancer often occur following attempted curative resection of the primary tumor, and up to 66% of local recurrences are associated with positive margins. Therefore, technologies that can improve the visualization of tumor margins and adjuvant therapies to ablate remaining tumor tissues are needed during surgical resection of prostate adenocarcinoma. Photodynamic agents have the potential to combine both fluorescence for image-guided surgery (IGS) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) to resect and ablate cancer cells.
