Tools Needed to Support Same-Day Diagnosis and Treatment of Current Hepatitis C Virus Infection.

The current multiday diagnosis and treatment paradigm for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection results in far fewer patients receiving treatment with direct-acting antiviral agents than those with diagnosed HCV infection. To achieve HCV elimination, a paradigm shift in access to HCV treatment is needed from multiday testing and treatment algorithms to same-day diagnosis and treatment. This shift will require new tools, such as point-of-care (POC) antigen tests or nucleic acid tests for HCV and hepatitis B virus (HBV) and nucleic acid tests for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that do not require venous blood.

Most insects maintain associations with microbes that shape their ecology and evolution. Such symbioses have important applied implications when the associated insects are pests or vectors of disease. The squash bug, (Coreoidea: Coreidae), is a significant pest of human agriculture in its own right and also causes damage to crops due to its capacity to transmit a bacterial plant pathogen.

Influenza vaccine community outreach: Leveraging an interprofessional healthcare student workforce to immunize marginalized populations.

Vulnerable populations such as the uninsured, unemployed, and unhoused face significant morbidity and mortality from influenza but are less likely to receive the annual vaccine and have limited access to medical care. We describe an interprofessional, student-run vaccine outreach program (VOP) in Davidson County, Tennessee that lowers barriers to vaccination through free vaccination events in nontraditional community locations. We provide this framework as a model to expand novel, seasonal, or outbreak-oriented vaccine outreach to resource-poor populations.

Circulating Troponin I Level in Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke.

Purpose Of Review: Cardiac troponin levels in the blood are an important biomarker of acute coronary events, but may also be elevated in the context of acute ischemic stroke without an obvious concurrent myocardial insult. The objective of this study and systematic review is to determine how high the circulating troponin I level can rise due to ischemic stroke.

Recent Findings: Anonymized medical records from Vanderbilt University Medical Center were reviewed identifying 151,972 unique acute ischemic stroke events, of which 1226 met criteria for inclusion in this study.

Practice Patterns of Providers for the Management of Staphylococcus aureus Bacteremia in Children: Results of an Emerging Infections Network Survey.

We conducted a survey of pediatric infectious diseases providers in the Emerging Infections Network regarding the workup and treatment of children with Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB). We found significant practice variation in the management of children with SAB. These findings emphasize the need for further research to guide best practices.

A Case of a 4-Year-Old Female with a Primary Spinal Malignancy Presenting with Froin's Syndrome.

We report the case of a 4-year-old female with a primary extradural intramedullary atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor (AT/RT) leading to a middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarct and Froin's syndrome. She presented with a 6-pound weight loss over the previous week, as well as a decreased urinary output and an altered mental status. She underwent a brain MRI that revealed a left MCA infarct, mild ventriculomegaly, and bilateral internal carotid artery, M1, and A1 stenosis.
