Interferon and ribavirin decrease necroinflammation in chronic hepatitis C with or without virological clearance; however, reversibility of fibrosis remains to be established. We evaluated the effect of combination therapy on virological and liver histopathological outcomes in 52 naive patients and 79 patients unresponsive to interferon monotherapy with predominantly genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C. One hundred four patients completed interferon and ribavirin treatment after 24-48 weeks.

Data Sources: The primary data source was Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston. Patient demographics, utilization, cost, and revenue data were obtained from the hospital's cost accounting system and medical records.
Previous studies have shown that the viral Jun (v-Jun) oncoprotein induces marked alterations in cell cycle control, which are associated with, and may be caused by, increased cdk2 kinase activity. Since p21 CIP1 is an important regulator of cdk2, we investigated whether aberrant expression of this cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor might contribute to cell cycle deregulation by v-Jun. We find that the basal levels of p21 CIP1 mRNA and protein expression are greatly reduced in chick embryo fibroblasts (CEF) transformed by v-Jun, and that v-Jun blocks the increases in p21 CIP1 expression that normally accompany growth inhibition induced by serum deprivation or confluency in untransformed CEF.

Proteins directly control the nucleation and growth of biominerals, but the details of molecular recognition at the protein-biomineral interface remain poorly understood. The elucidation of recognition mechanisms at this interface may provide design principles for advanced materials development in medical and ceramic composites technologies. Here, we describe both the theory and practice of double-quantum solid-state NMR (ssNMR) structure-determination techniques, as they are used to determine the secondary structures of surface-adsorbed peptides and proteins.

Successful control of vaccine-preventable diseases depends on high levels of immunization coverage. Immunization statistics show that on-reserve First Nations (Native Indian) children have lower vaccination coverage than children in the general Canadian population.

This article describes the findings of a modest qualitative study that deals with the concept of health and involves the women-centered interviewing of six women who live in poverty. The themes uncovered in this study identify the struggle for wholeness in the midst of poverty. The findings validate many of the nursing theorists' definitions of health as wholeness, and challenge care providers to bring an appreciation of this view to their understanding of women's health.

We have previously found that the cyclin dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitor p21(WAF1/CIP1) can stimulate transactivation by p300 and CBP through inhibiting transcriptional repression by a discrete domain within these proteins termed CRD1. Given the large number of p300/CBP associated functions, it is unlikely that p21 regulates the expression of every gene under their control, however.

Methods: Three children with BCECTS and episodes of continuous simple partial seizures are described.
Results: All three children had a history of typical rolandic seizures occurring on the right and left sides of the body on different occasions.
The suggestion that brassinosteroids (BRs) have a negative regulatory role in de-etiolation is based largely on correlative evidence, which includes the de-etiolated phenotypes of, and increased expression of light-regulated genes in, dark-grown mutants defective in BR biosynthesis or response. However, we have obtained the first direct evidence which shows that endogenous BR levels in light-grown pea seedlings are increased, not decreased, in comparison with those grown in the dark. Similarly, we found no evidence of a decrease in castasterone (CS) levels in seedlings that were transferred from the dark to the light for 24 h.

The report focuses on advance care planning in the Department of Veterans Affairs. After reviewing clinical, legal, and ethical perspectives, the authors conclude that advance proxy planning is ethically sound and can improve patient care.

Purpose: To characterize in vivo changes of adenylate cyclase activity in rabbit ciliary processes during the circadian cycle.
Methods: After removal of vitreous, lens, retina and choroid from freshly enucleated rabbit eyes, the anterior segment and attached sclera was chilled in cold buffer containing the non-selective phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitor, 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX). Then ciliary processes were excised and homogenized in ice cold trichloro-acetic acid (TCA) 2.
The use of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) as a primary disinfectant and pre-oxidant in drinking water treatment is being explored as an alternative to chlorine for reducing disinfection by-product formation and to assure compliance with United States Environmental Protection Agency's Stage 1 Disinfection/ Disinfection By-Products Rule. However, the ClO2 by-product chlorite ion (ClO2-) is also regulated by the same regulation. Ferrous iron (Fe(II)) has been shown to effectively reduce chlorite ion to chloride ion (Cl-) and this study was conducted to evaluate the impact on overall treatment process performance due to the ferric hydroxide solids that form from the reaction.

Selection of a contract renegotiation strategy should be preceded by a focused analysis of situational variables and followed by conscientious performance monitoring. Through careful consideration of the compatibility to their goals, core values, and operational capabilities, healthcare providers and managed care organizations can craft agreements with the potential for sustaining meaningful long-term partnerships.

The rapid accumulation of genomic sequence information for a number of species has enabled a comparative phylogenetic approach to find important regulatory elements. For some genes, which show a similar pattern of expression in humans and rodents, genomic sequence information for these two species may be sufficient.

We reviewed the literature on clinical trials of beta-adrenergic blockade for treatment of heart failure, seeking evidence of reductions in hospital admissions. To analyze the economic implications of six clinical trials, we developed a stochastic cost model to generate estimates of total medical costs resulting from heart failure and related causes. The model includes inpatient, outpatient, and professional cost estimates based on Medicare claims data, and it is driven by traditional endpoint statistics reported in the clinical trial literature.
