Background: The concept of worker's perception of injury risk has been used to set safe material-handling limits and to determine compliance with health and safety regulations but has not been used to identify perceptual differences among occupations or potential deficiencies in risk awareness.

A hybrid approach is presented for obtaining electric potentials for use in electron optics modeling. An initial solution from the boundary element method (BEM) is used to derive the bounding potential of a cylindrical subdomain subsequently used in a Fourier series solution. The approach combines the inherent precision of this analytic solution with the flexibility of BEM to describe practical, non-idealized systems of electrodes.

A magnesium hydride composite with enhanced hydrogen desorption kinetics can be synthesized via a simple wet chemical route by ball milling MgH2 with LiCl as an additive at room temperature followed by tetrahydrofuran (THF) treatment under an Ar atmosphere. The current study examined of the effect of intermittent, short-term periods of full trunk flexion on the development of low back pain (LBP) during two hours of standing. Sixteen participants completed two 2-h standing protocols, separated by one week. Our purpose is to comprehensively review the state of the art with regard to Stevens- Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), with particular attention to improving the management of associated ocular surface complications. SJS and TEN are two ends of a spectrum of immune-mediated disease, characterized in the acute phase by a febrile illness followed by skin and mucous membrane necrosis and detachment. This project aimed to compare gross anatomical measures and biomechanical properties of single lamellae from the annulus fibrosus of ovine and porcine lumbar vertebrae, and bovine tail vertebrae. The morphology of the vertebrae of these species differ significantly both from each other and from human, yet how these differences alter biomechanical properties is unknown. In this Perspectives, we discuss some recent developments in the pathogenesis of acute lung injury following influenza infection, with an emphasis on promising therapeutic leads. Damage to the alveolar-capillary barrier has been quantified in mice, and agents have been identified that can help to preserve barrier integrity, such as vasculotide, angiopoietin-like 4 neutralization, and sphingosine 1-phosphate mimics. Results from studies using mesenchymal stem cells have been disappointing, despite promising data in other types of lung injury.

Congestion is a primary reason for hospitalization in patients with acute heart failure (AHF). Despite inpatient diuretics and vasodilators targeting decongestion, persistent congestion is present in many AHF patients at discharge and more severe congestion is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. A useful laboratory technique has been devised using commonly available optical hardware and software to accurately measure the eye's response to flashing light-emitting diode (LED) sources. A simplified version of the modified Allard technique is implemented using a silicon detector, a digital multimeter, and Labview software to collect and analyze the data. Using calibrated radiometric measurements, the method presented allows quantifying, in photopic units, the human eye's response to these sources.
