Introduction: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common among hospitalized patients and has a significant impact on morbidity and mortality. Although early prediction of AKI has the potential to reduce adverse patient outcomes, it remains a difficult condition to predict and diagnose. A number of new initiatives dedicated to advancing the field of nephrology-from value-based care to prize competitions-will further improve outcomes of patients with kidney disease. Because of individual nephrologists and kidney organizations in the United States, such as the American Society of Nephrology, the National Kidney Foundation, and the Renal Physicians Association, and international nephrologists and organizations, such as the International Society of Nephrology and the European Renal Association-European Dialysis and Transplant Association, we are beginning to gain traction to invigorate nephrology to meet the pandemic of global kidney diseases.

Salt contamination of lakes, due to the application of winter de-icing salts on roads, presents a significant environmental challenge in the "salt belt" region of eastern North America. The research reported here presents the first deployment of a previously published proxy tool based on Arcellinida (testate lobose amoebae) for monitoring road salt contamination. The research was conducted at Silver Lake in Eastern Ontario, a 4-km-long lake with the heavily traveled Trans-Canada Highway (HWY 7) transiting the entire southern shore.

The objective of this review article was to identify and examine current evidence surrounding the potential renoprotective effects of newer antidiabetic agents such as sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors, glucose-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) agonists, and dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. A literature search of MEDLINE and PubMed (January 2000 to April 2019) was performed using the following search terms: "diabetes treatment," "renoprotection," "kidneys," "SGLT-2 inhibitors," "GLP-1 receptor agonists," "DPP-4 inhibitors," and the drug names in each of those classes as well as any combination of these terms. Literature was excluded if published in a language other than English, performed in nonhuman subjects, did not include patients from the United States, was nonrandomized, or the data were available from poster presentations.

Arcellinida (testate lobose amoebae) are widely used as bio-indicators of lacustrine environmental change. Too much obscuring organic material in a gridded wet Petri dish preparation makes it difficult to observe all specimens present and slows quantification as the organic material has to be carefully worked through with a dissection probe. Chemical deflocculation using soda ash (NaCO·HO), potassium hydroxide (KOH), or sodium hexametaphosphate ((NaPO)) has previously been shown to disaggregate and reduce organic content in lake sediments, but to date, no attempt has been made to comparatively evaluate the efficiency of these deflocculants in disaggregating organic content and their impact on Arcellinida analysis in lacustrine sediments.

Oxcarbazepine and carbamazepine cause hyponatremia by unknown mechanisms. We describe a patient with complete central diabetes insipidus and seizures who developed worsening hyponatremia when her dose of oxcarbazepine was increased. The patient maintained a normal serum sodium level and has had appropriately concentrated urine for 5 years on just oxcarbazepine, despite undetectable antidiuretic hormone (ADH) levels.

Arcellinida (testate lobose amoebae), a group of benthic protists, were examined from 46 sediment-water interface samples collected from oligotrophic Oromocto Lake, New Brunswick, Canada. To assess (1) assemblage homogeneity at a sub-meter spatial scale and (2) the necessity for collecting samples from multiple stations during intra-lake surveys; multiple samples were collected from three stations (quadrats 1, 2, and 3) across the north basin of Oromocto Lake, with quadrat 1 (n = 16) being the furthest to the west, quadrat 2 (n = 15) situated closer to the center of the basin, and quadrat 3 (n = 15) positioned 300 m south of the mouth of Dead Brook, an inlet stream. Results from cluster analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis identified two major Arcellinida assemblages, A1 and A2, the latter containing two sub-assemblages (A2a and A2b).

Background: We identified two boys with type 3 renal tubular acidosis (RTA) and growth hormone deficiency and we sought to differentiate them from children with classic type 1 distal RTA.

Methods: We reviewed all children <6 years of age with RTA referred over a 13-year period and compared the growth response to alkali therapy in these two boys and in 28 children with only type 1 distal RTA.

Results: All children with type 1 RTA reached the 5th percentile or higher on CDC growth charts within 2 years of alkali therapy.

Purpose: Antibiotic locks in catheter-dependent chronic hemodialysis patients reduce the rate of catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs), but may be associated with the development of resistant bacteria. Ethanol-based catheter locks may provide a better alternative; however, there are limited data on the long-term integrity of dialysis catheters exposed to ethanol.

Methods: We performed in vitro testing of two types of hemodialysis catheters—silicone (SLC) and carbothane (CBT) based—with a 70% ethanol lock (EL) versus heparin lock (HL) for 26 weeks.
