A broadly applicable catalyst system consisting of water-soluble Pd--imidate complexes has been enployed for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of four different nucleosides in water under mild conditions. The efficient nature of the catalyst system also allowed its application in developing a microwave-assisted protocol with the purpose of expediting the catalytic reaction. Preliminary mechanistic studies, assisted by catalyst poison tests and stoichiometric tests performed using an electrospray ionization spectrometer, revealed the possible presence of a homotopic catalyst system.

The synthesis of mono- and dinuclear cyclometallated palladium(II) complexes with deprotonated saccharinate ligands displaying different coordination modes is described. The new compounds were prepared by direct reaction between saccharine and the corresponding hydroxo-complexes [{Pd(μ-OH)(C^N)}(2)] (C^N = 2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl (Phpy) I; = 7,8-benzoquinolyl (Bzq) II), showing a general formula [{Pd(μ-sac)(C^N)}(2)] with saccharinate 1 displaying a bridging -NCO-coordination mode. Bridge splitting with neutral ligands (L = pyridine (py) 2, quinoline (quinol) 3 or acridine (acrid) 4) yielded new mononuclear derivatives with saccharinate acting as an N-monodentated ligand.

A novel synthetic route to prepare palladium(II) precursor analogous of classical [Pd(Cl)(2)(solvent)(2)] has been developed. Just stirring Pd(3)(AcO)(6) in dimethyl sulfide at room temperature, in the stoichiometric presence of protic imidate ligands, resulted in the precipitation of the desired complexes [Pd(imidate)(2)(SMe(2))(2)] (imidate = succinimidate (succ) 1, phthalimidate (phthal) 2, maleimidate (mal) 3, saccharinate (sac) 4 or glutarimidate (glut) 5). The single crystal structures of [Ni(Me(3)-mcN(3))(H(2)O)(sac)](PF(6)) (3a) and [Ni(Me(4)-mcN(3))(H(2)O)(sac)](sac) (3b) show that, in 3a, sac exhibits a N-monodentate coordination mode, while in 3b the coordination is through oxygen. Novel dinuclear cyclometallated palladium complexes [{Pd(mu-NCO)(C circumflex accent N)}(2)], containing asymmetric imidato -NCO- bridging units have been synthesised [C circumflex accent N = 7,8-benzoquinolyl; -NCO- = succinimidate (1c), phthalimidate (1a-3a) or maleimidate (3c)]. The reaction of these complexes, and the previously reported analogous imidate precursors containing a phenylazophenyl (1a-3a) or 2-pyridylphenyl (1b-3b) backbone, with tertiary phosphines provides novel mononuclear N-bonded imidate derivatives of the general formula [Pd(C circumflex accent N)(imidate)(L)][L = PPh(3), P(4-F-C(6)H(4))(3) or P(4-MeO-C(6)H(4))(3)]. This paper describes the superacid-catalyzed chemistry of olefinic amines and related compounds. A variety of olefinic amines are found to react with benzene in CF(3)SO(3)H (triflic acid) to give addition products in good yields (75-99%), including the pharmaceutical agents fenpiprane and prozapine. A general mechanism is proposed that invokes the formation of reactive, dicationic electrophiles and the direct observation of a diprotonated species is reported from low-temperature NMR experiments.

Amino acetals are shown to form highly electrophilic systems in Bronsted superacids. It is proposed that amino acetals give dicationic electrophiles, and this proposal is supported by the direct observation of a dication by low-temperature (13)C NMR. When reacted with C(6)H(6) and superacidic CF(3)SO(3)H, amino acetals are shown to provide 1-(3,3-diphenylpropyl)amines and 1-(2,2-diphenylethyl)amines as condensation products in good yields (50-99%).
