Objective: IL-18 is a pro-inflammatory cytokine of the IL-1 family that is naturally inhibited by IL-18 binding protein (IL-18BP). High levels of IL-18 have been described in the serum of adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) patients, but only total IL-18 levels (including inactive IL-18 bound to IL-18BP) have been measured. With a specific immunoassay, we aimed to measure free IL-18 serum levels in AOSD patients and other rheumatic diseases.

The ability of thioredoxin f to form an electrostatic (non-covalent) complex, earlier found with fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase, was extended to include 27 previously unrecognized proteins functional in 11 processes of chloroplasts. The proteins were identified by combining thioredoxin f affinity chromatography with proteomic analysis using tandem mass spectrometry. The results provide evidence that an association with thioredoxin enables the interacting protein to achieve an optimal conformation, so as to facilitate: (i) the transfer of reducing equivalents from the ferredoxin/ferredoxin-thioredoxin reductase complex to a target protein; (ii) in some cases, to enable the channeling of metabolite substrates; (iii) to function as a subunit in the formation of multienzyme complexes.

Excessive neutrophil elastase activity within airways of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients results in progressive lung damage. Disruption of disulfide bonds on elastase by reducing agents may modify its enzymatic activity. Three naturally occurring dithiol reducing systems were examined for their effects on elastase activity: 1) Escherichia coli thioredoxin (Trx) system, 2) recombinant human thioredoxin (rhTrx) system, and 3) dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA).
