Venom represents one of the most extreme manifestations of a chemical arms race. Venoms are complex biochemical arsenals, often containing hundreds to thousands of unique protein toxins. Despite their utility for prey capture, venoms are energetically expensive commodities, and consequently it is hypothesized that venom complexity is inversely related to the capacity of a venomous animal to physically subdue prey.

Differential diagnosis of serous papillary carcinoma of the gynaecological tract and basal breast carcinoma: an immunohistochemical approach.

Aims: There is a high frequency of serous gynaecological and basal breast cancers in patients with germline BRCA1 mutations. These patients often undergo prophylactic salpingo-oophorectomies, where small tumours may be identified in which morphological distinction between primary serous and metastatic basal breast cancer may be problematic. These two cancer types share similar molecular genetics and have immunophenotypic overlap.

Pagetoid squamous cell carcinoma in situ (PSSCIS) is a variant of squamous cell intraepithelial neoplasia. Although PSSCIS is well-documented in the cutaneous skin and esophagus, cases of vulvar PSSCIS are rare. In the vulva, the main differential diagnosis is extramammary Paget disease (EMPD).
